I work in hollywood and yes traffic is a son of a bitch. I'm luck I get to carpool with a guy who lives about 10 mins from my house and we work later (start work at 10) so we miss most of the traffic. But still a normal day is 1:15 mins each way. (70ish miles)

I work with a few people that live less then 20 miles away from the office and it takes them over 45 mins to get in.

That's not bad considering I commute on the I5 and my total distance traveled is 16 miles and it takes me an average of 45 minutes. Not bad. 1:15 would eventually wear on me again as it has before.

Thanks for the info!

She arched her back to turn it into a decline press. Most body builders are usually stronger on decline, youre using more of your pectoral and tricep, less shoulder and upper pec. The heavier I lift, the more I arch.

And Guy, you should take a page out of her book. By not letting the bar down past the point where your elbows are 90 degrees, it limits your range of motion and saves your shoulders. Just like when I do triceps, I never allow the bar to go past the point where my elbow bends 90 degrees, to save my elbows. I never arch as much as she did, but she may just be compensating for having no incline strength. ...She is a 13 year old girl. Haha

I'm not retarded, that's how I do it, body has no benefit to going past 90* Especially me, with my bad shoulder and a 80" reach, recipe for disaster. My shoulder is that bad where it's popped out just warming up with the bar. Not as bad no that I've worked on it some, but it still makes me iffy.

Since I can barely use even my phone because of the way your radial, ulna and metacarpals work when it's broken this way the only motion that isn't threatening healing is perpendicular to the injury. I.e I could do knuckle pushups with a wrap. But it's not worth it, i'll just wait it out.

Google is buying the next generation simple quantum computers. It's still very young, but fascinating tech. It has some people freaking out, because it would, among other things, render all current encryption mechanisms futile, make pattern recognition systems (like face, etc.), basically instantaneous, etc. It also let us completely explore problem sets that are currently off limits, or very difficult, like protein folding. But we're not quite there yet. The tech is amazing.

Protein folding?

Vettezuki
06-21-2013, 01:11 AM
Protein folding?

Proteins are complex chains of amino acids. They can fold into molecularly appropriate forms, compatible with life, or they can be malformed and cause trouble for the organism. The process of folding from one form to another is a combinatorically huge problem space.

Protein folding is the process by which a protein structure assumes its functional shape or conformation. It is the physical process by which a polypeptide folds into its characteristic and functional three-dimensional structure from random coil.[1] Each protein exists as an unfolded polypeptide or random coil when translated from a sequence of mRNA to a linear chain of amino acids. This polypeptide lacks any stable (long-lasting) three-dimensional structure (the left hand side of the neighbouring figure). Amino acids interact with each other to produce a well-defined three-dimensional structure, the folded protein (the right hand side of the figure), known as the native state. The resulting three-dimensional structure is determined by the amino acid sequence (Anfinsen's dogma).[2] Experiments [3] beginning in the 1980s indicate the codon for an amino acid can also influence protein structure.

The correct three-dimensional structure is essential to function, although some parts of functional proteins may remain unfolded.[4] Failure to fold into native structure generally produces inactive proteins, but in some instances misfolded proteins have modified or toxic functionality. Several neurodegenerative and other diseases are believed to result from the accumulation of amyloid fibrils formed by misfolded proteins.[5] Many allergies are caused by incorrect folding of some proteins, for the immune system does not produce antibodies for certain protein structures.[6]

I was going to pay off a not insubstantial personal business debt with a re-fi as we have lots of equity, but just after we started the process, the bond market went ape shit. Folks on my end have been waiting for the shoe to drop and expect it to get much much "worse". It's not a big deal personally other than what was going to be a nice free cash flow if I could have gotten the re-fi at a low rate over a long term will now be redirected to paying the business loan. It's half piss off as I was looking forward to having a little play money for the first time in years, but half ok since I'd be paying off a loan in 4 years or so instead of 30.

IF you were seriously that low, the engine would shut off anyhow. Most diesels use the oil pressure to fire the injectors. I had a nasty oil seal blowout on my old dually and limped it home(ish) while it was spraying oil from the back of the HPOP. Made it 2 blocks from the shop before it shut off, engine will shut down long before major damage occurs.

Do not drive across it btw. I lucked out and saw a sign in a parking garage ten mins before I planned to do so, warning that its only electronic toll now. Meaning, if you dont have a fast track, theyll mail you a lovely $50+ ticket. Motherless cock suckers. Nice way to fuck your tourists after they dump all of their money into your city. So I have a quandary. I'm thinking about getting a small loan to get both cars running, if I get picked up by CHP having three Cars down will make things significantly more difficult logistics wise. That and trying to save for two cars with other bills will take years as opposed to the small monthly it would be for the loan. 4K is about 100t a month and would get both cars running, and finish one of them. What y'all think?

I have strong feelings about this. Do not loan for toys. If you need transportation, don't dick around and get one reliable car working. (Truck?) If you must borrow to do this, then so be it, you can't be without reliable transportation in SoCal. But don't borrow for play things. Who cares if it takes years. Irrelevant.

1st - Essentials
Food, Clothing, Shelter, Transportation, Current Medical, etc.

2nd - Saving and Investing
So you have money for lean times and build for a half decent future and so you can take care yourself when you're older if you make it that far. This should be around 10%+ of your income. (Being hardcore, some people actually put this No. 1, it's called "pay yourself first".)

3rd - Play
Then play things with whatever is left that you can waft off the top. Consumption comes AFTER production. Horse goes BEFORE cart.

What truck parts? All the things done to the truck were essential repairs. Tires came with the rims, turbo was needed because the old one was trashed, etc. Everything else has been simple zero cost repairs. Less than1000 total.

years right now are very relevant. WhenI'm gone from the shop I'm gone, no more shop space, etc. I need at least one secondary vehicle. Right now I have none, its not the first loan I took, I took one for my trans I paid off in a year, one for the blue truck that I paid off in 8. You can build a shop out of garage or stick up a building on property, or borrow/rent one. They're not scarce. Adam painted a boat hung from a ceiling at an apartment. If you wanna get it done, you will.

The building credit thing is kind of a line of bullshit sold to you mostly by credit card companies. You come in with significant down payment on whatever that is secured by the asset itself and creditors will lend. Period. Interest is money spent on money, it is an opportunity cost. It is defensible when used for large capital purchases (house) or as leverage in business (powerful tool there for extending returns), beyond this it falls off to stupid in a hurry.

Oh, and psychoogy almost EVERYONE speds more than they would have (on principle alone) than they would paying cash. Throw in service on top of that you see why so few people actually have much in the way of working/living capital and get themselves into hand-to-mouth situations.

I know I'm being preachy. But you're young and this shit is dead serious. Get it right now and you'll be totally fine. But your perspective matters a lot. Don't bullshit yourself.

Finishing a car to sell is a simple business calculation. If you can net more from the sale (reasonably estimated) then borrowing can be perfectly sensible in that case. You net some to the bottom line AND get a liability off your balance sheet (registrations fees, etc.). I don't know why anyone needs two commuter cars unless they just love sacks of shit.

I'll be at a live in academy for eight months, i doubt they'll let me make a makeshift shop in a dorm area. I'm building credit for a house, that's it, not another car, not toys, a house. I don't have a credit card now, and I never will.

If you have a 20%+ down (which admittedly is kind of a lot in SoCal even at a very entry level house) and CHP gig your credit ain't gonna matter. I'm sure they have their on CU with juicy first time buyer programs where that kind of down or particularly high credit wouldn't be necessary.

Borrowing to finish a car to sell, where the sale price is higher than P+I is straight forward. That makes sense.

Don't have 20% down, that's part of the problem. Don't need 2 mustangs, I have mine, and the other is an extra in my eyes, perfect for getting towards that 20% Credit matters, I want a bitchen rate and a bitchen house first time around. If I can get both why not? Revolving credit isn't bad, sure it costs money but I have paid 36 months loans in 12 months or less

Pros are running cars, more room for flipping cars again, more time for side jobs. No more stressing about putting away hundreds a month towards a car instead of putting away hundreds a month in savings. Seems pretty straight forward to me, once car sell, loan is wiped and i'm out ahead.

Now bar study, THAT is full fucking time. 12-14 hours a day studying. No sick days, no weekends, no holidays, no date nights with the gf, not even 2 hours to watch the new Batman movie or even a movie at home. For 3-4 months, following 6 months of studying for the bar part-time in school, and then 4-5 months waiting for your results.

Also, probably a whole hell of a lot less fun than training to shoot, drive fast, and kick ass. With no guaranteed job on the other end, a competitive market in a shitty economy, and a fuck load of law school debt. What was I thinking again?

The higher end of the pay scale and potential challenges are pretty intense. But it might take you another 10 years of breaking your balls before you really start to move up, another 10 years with good fortune, but by mid late 40s, you could be hauling in very serious scratch.

The thing that is crazy hard, but has excellent opportunities, massive portability, and will be demanded almost no matter what the economy does is becoming an MD. That's the track my sister is on and it's pretty much continuous hard study and work for about 10 years including residency and you can easily have significant six figure debt. But "even" nursing pays well and is highly demanded and will be for the foreseeable future. Get your NP/PA level and you can make six figures full time, or into the 90s just part time.

I already have to run what is effectively 93 on the hotter days in summer. Headers with an appropriate retune would probably fix this and I could always just run 91 (i.e., no torco), but I don't think even with good headers and retune that I could run any boost really. Maybe 3lbs? But what's the point of that.

Probably I'll just do headers (maybe gucci rockers and lifters) and a retune. This would take me to 430WHP on an N/A 346ci and pump gas still passing smog. That's probably about as good as it's going to get. and in a car that is 3,100lbs full wet, plenty of of power for the street. My clutch and trans would still handle it, and as long as I don't get too sticky of street tires, the diff would still handle that. If I went with a boost engine, I'm not going to dick around, but decompress and go for an intercooled one atmosphere tuned for pump gas. that's going to be more like 550whp and then clutch would be "underpowered" and trans and diff would be ticking time bombs.

First you would make way more then 550 with one bar. And why do you need so much Octane in a mostly stock LS1? People run 7 psi on stock stuff all day long with only 91. Hell I only run 91 with 10.5:1 and 5.5 psi

Cuz it's not mostly stock. They're heavily ported and decked 4.8L heads and a moderate cam (compression was advertised as 11:1, but maybe a little more, but with with stock manifolds so there is a fuck ton of back pressure, 3 psi measured at WOT. It's only if it gets hotter in the summer and I push, it pings a little. The 93~ is just for a safety margin and to maintain timing, it's not strictly necessary. And in many parts of the country 93 out of the pump is still very common, it's not really exotic.

The 550WHP on one bar intercooled on a H&C 346 is conservative/safe, but it wouldn't be a lot more. Who knows for sure unless it was done and dynoed.

I know for a fact with my exact current setup that I made 391 on a Mutang dyno. Getting it to breath on the back side would help a lot.

Ben, lol.

Blackax: His LS is about as stock as Sharon Stone is a virgin. Its H&C. And 15 lbs is a lot of boost on a street V8, even for a centri blower.

Also Ben, nitrous is no different than anything else. Its just a chemical supercharger. Cylinder pressure is cylinder pressure. If I ever run the Vette as a drag car, Id seriously consider nitrous for 3rd and 4th gear.

The Chevelle runs good on nitrous! Like Adam said, if you run out of nitrous you just end up running rich. I have two fuel pumps on the Chevelle, one for the engine and the other is for the nitrous system. The engine one is a Holley black pump that's rated at 130gph and the one for the nitrous system is a Holley red pump rated at 87gph. I'm using the factory 3/8 line for the black pump and ran a seperate 3/8 aluminum line for the red pump. When I wired up my nitrous system I used one toggle switch for the red pump and then another to arm the nitrous system. I have the power for the nitrous system from the red fuel pump switch so if I accidently arm the system without turning on it's fuel pump the system won't come on. That way I can't accidently inject nitrous without fuel. I also run a full throttle switch that is triggered by the carb linkage so as some as I go full throttle the nitrous system activates but some people use a button so they can activate it when they want.

That is correct. However, if you are happy with the way your engine performs now on the street but want it to be faster in the quarter mile you could add a nitrous system for around $500 and pick up a full second. With a 150 shot of nitrous, a ten pound bottle and mid to high 10 second runs you could get around 8 passes on a bottle. Depending on where you fill it a bottle fill cost around $35.

I automate that process and keep it as far out of my mind as possible. As a business owner, some of the extra taxes get really fucking stupid. My personal favorite is the "business property" tax. Let's say you've invested $100k in fixtures, machines, whatever. CA levies a 1% tax on that. Why? Because they can. Simple takings. No value return. You kill yourself to build your business and provide something to the public, and the mafia (aka, government) just helps themselves to whatever they want. My brother in his business recently discovered one I didn't even know about. The labor tax. Yes labor tax. If he builds something on spec for someone (he designs and fabricates furniture and stuff) he has to withhold basically a sales tax on his labor.

There needs to be a flat tax (some call it fair tax) across the board... do away with the IRS and we can all pay the same, people, coprorations large and small, no loopholes, no favors, just a fair shot across the board. Seems fair to me anyways. Start at like 17% maybe, and imprison all of the politicians in D.C. for Treason and pejury becuase they all SWORE an oath to the constitution and they ALL (well 99% of them) would rather line their pockets by sending GOV contracts to friends and family (conflict of interest anyone) rather than SERVE the country.

Sorry in a bad mood today. gotta vent real quick to the guys. I'm sure ALL of you have come across this at some point so you may understand... My fiancee an I are driving... she stops in the middle of a lane to turn left, no blinker, just stops, "I say hey babe, blinker? I don't want some idiot to hit us" and then she pulls into a spot where some IDIOT has parked on the line, and their car is just completely destroyed on that side, literally they must have hit a pole and just drug their car along it until they passed completely. I said, in a semi joking manner, "babe can you move one spot over so that person doesn't bash our car with their door cuz clearly they don't give fuck about thier piece of shit vehicle" (the very next spot over was open). And it turns into her freaking out and demanding that I apologize for saying something SO effed up to her that it almost made her cry. REALLY?!?!?!? wtf? so I apologize cuz its not worth it. But come on, I'm trying to help her be a better driver and take into account how HORRIBLE the average motorist is at operating their vehicle, and be safe WITH OUR KID IN THE CAR so no terrible accidents befall her when I am not in the car. I guess I really am an asshat or something. /vent

Flat tax, seems fair. But, dont you think a business, like Apple, eating a larger piece of the pie, should pay more of a tip/ tax?

I think if we charged Billy Joe the same amount of tax that we charge Exxon Mobil, the economy would suffer.

The thing is though, that it seems like the large corporations and their high level emploees seem to be able to find some kind of shleter to get around taxes. I doubt Apple pays more than 17%. Though, I'm not sure what they do pay, is that even public record? I'm not really sure to be honest. It seems like they have charitable ways to get around it. For example, I remember a few months ago everyone was tripping about how Obama was paying like 14% (can't remember exactly) in taxes... really? come on, I pay in the upper 20%. How is a guy making 5x what I make paying less than me? That seems REAL fair. There really isn't a good solution here I don't think. It's kind of like do the least jacked up thing possible.

Private corporations DO pay net taxes if they have net profit. Unless they're a start up they need net profit if they're going to attract investment capital or commercial loans. How much they pay varies of course, and gets weird in the cases of corporations who get subsidies. The US technically has one of the highest corporate tax rates.

OTOH, nobody who works for government actually pays anything in taxes. :D
