Thats really cool, minus the fact that you forgot to include naked lady servants.
You think one windmill would produce enough electricity for a home? I could believe it, my mom used to have a solar powered water heater. How do you keep the spring water free of enough bacteria and organisms to land you in an interesting episode of House MD?
Solar water heaters, also on the roof, are extremely effective at heating water. Well water can be tested for nasties, but I would certainly always filter any drinking water just to be on the safe side. (I filter tap water for that matter.) A windmill of even moderate size, this is a rather large one, can produce plenty of power for a home or more. In this location there is a fairly constant windmill-appropriate breeze. Not shown, but described in the design is a battery bank of nickel-iron batteries, to "buffer" the energy for draw.

The new solar power systems are effective. I am going to Phoenix later this fall and I will make a pitch to my parents. Whole sale they are about $2/ watt for equipment. They are about $8 a watt to from a retailer installed. Installation is easy, but you need a P.E. to sign your drawing and a license Electrician to connect it to your home's power source. Most people are building systems large enough to keep them in tier 1 power usage (monthly power bill ~$10-$30). Over building the system to feed the grid isn't worth it because the power company will only pay $.04 per KW. So the return on investment isn't worth over building the system.
I am building a system for the pool at my parents house. the pump will be solar powered (saving $100/month). Since it's a pump and direct drive there are no batteries required and no licensed electrician required to connect the system.
I have been looking into it based on several friends of mine seeing major returns, low maintenance (panels must be cleaned), and relatively low cost.
There are a bunch of kick backs that help mitigate the initial cost also.
P.S. Wind turbines are in jeopardy. High maintenance cost makes the $/KW number not work. Hippies are going to start attacking them since their are some "videos" of birds getting whacked. They can fail catastrophically (that's a fancy word for suddenly for the dumb fucks with rusty cars) too.

Keep me posted on your solar projects. Since the kind of stuff I'm interested in is off grid, no fucks are given about licensed electricians, proofed drawings etc. (But I'm not a redneck with a death wish either.) I've heard of some DIY getting down to below $1/watt. I think most modern cells are still loosing about 1%/year in efficiency, but that's not too bad. There's some other solar tech that's being downsized from commercial, but it will be many years before it's available for houses.
My grandpa is an engineer from the aerospace days. He and a buddy are rigging up solar powered pool pumps too.
Windmills are mixed bag. On the upside, a small installation can put out many kilowatts if it's properly located in a wind corridor. This site would be perfect *most* of the year. But it has Santa Anas a couple times a year, absolutely requiring the blade be locked. I think the catastrophic failures, TMK, are almost all because of one point of failure with a particular bearing in the design, that just receives constant high stress. It's being improved too. But yeah, in a desert site like the one I have, solar exposure is pretty much year round, no obstructions and there's plenty of surface area.
The best you can do in site designs like this, but is very rare to have access is micro-hyrdo. Super efficient large amounts of power through small systems that are very durable. There just aren't many places with a nice stream and a good fall.

A primitive acquaintance with basic accounting will let you know this dog can't hunt forever. It's basically strung along on revolving credit, but as the debt to income continues to get out of whack, the credit rating (cost of money) and debt service loads will become intractable. That's not a pretty picture. We're not there yet, but there's precisely no sign we're trying to avoid this unfolding either. Better pray for some miracle tech breakthroughs that massively drop costs of things like energy and medical and simultaneously stimulate a massive increase in economic production. Otherwise, it's going to be a nasty re-equilibrizing process for those who aren't well positioned to weather it. I don't see a Mad Max scenario, but something considerably worse than the recent recession is distinctly possible in <20 years. I really hope I'm wrong and we can at least maintain this kind of shitty mediocrity. :jester:

Entirely depends on what you're storing, how much, who has/needs access, etc. But you probably should figure >$1,000/year, and potentially a lot more. Call some agents, they will ask you ton of questions and give you a formal quote. I've used Cumbre to set us up. We ended up with The Hartford.

No, definitely closer to $1k/year range, possibly less is my guess. I imagine wherehouse space in Riverside is pretty cheap still . . . but have you considered a steel building on your property? If you think you're going to be there for very long, you can put up a simple building on terms for not that much and it does add value to the property. This of course totally depends on your relation to the property, blah blah.
I think you're ready to take on a 5.0 project, and I have just the convenient starter in mind . . .

Here's a pic of what he did to Joey Beltran on Friday. Exactly why I wouldn't spar with him. He's a beast and has knocked out his sparring partners even though he doesn't mean to.

I guess this is where we are different. You sound as if getting knocked out is something to be desired, a badge of honor. I think staying healthy is more important than feeding my ego. You say expecting to not get knocked out is stupid. I think doing something when you know it's highly likely you'll get knocked out, just for "fun", is stupid. Would I fight him if he were threatening me or my loved ones? Absolutely. Without hesitation. But for "fun". Not a chance.

No, i'm saying that every time I put on gloves and fight, I expect the worst, I could get knocked out, I could die, break something etc. Remember this is also my job, so I have a different feeling going in. Do I want to get hurt? No, is it the end of the world if I do? No.

Anything we do, there is a possibility of a negative outcome, racing, fighting, training etc. It sounds bad, but you have to agree that the thrilling things we do can end badly, I could burn to death in a car at the track, drop a barbell on my neck at the gym etc.

I'm much better dealing with this kind of stuff than I used to be (for reasons I'll pass on here), but it's a reminder that life is temporary for all living things, and while there are typical or expected patterns, there are no guarantees other than an end. Nothing to be super anxious about, it just is, but it's still a reminder to enjoy life and your connections in it and to be careful about the kinds of things you put off.

Well maybe you find him hilarious because you were beaten or sexually molested as a child and you have some deep routed childhood desire or subconscious need to have large men cover over you and go on and on spouting out barely comprehensible sentences with no pause and little point to the structure or even the message behind the sentence, I dont know maybe you were kicked in the head by Guy at a young age which caused you to suffer severe brain damage and now because of that you think run on sentences and virtually non-sensical jargon is funny, I dont know, is any of this hitting home with you? Or maybe I should just keep talking going on and on and on until you become dumbfounded and convinced that Im intelligent just because you cant keep up with my rigorous and annoying long monologues, maybe youre just a victim of being raised during a generational period where childrens minds could not fully develop because theyve been constantly brain fucked by computers and video games and all forms of electronic mass media and have become unable to think for themselves and when anyone cowers over you and spouts off language in such a fashion you think that its some how impressive and dominating to the listener and therefore funny? Well, we'll see how it goes, but I have another property in my sites. This is a mamooth, basically unheard of in SoCal anywhere near OC/LA and affordable to the middle class. It's in off a dirt road by a couple miles, but that ain't no thing, and the house is tired, but not destroyed. It is however, 67 (yes 67, not 6.7) acres, with some pretty nice views.
Have to trade the pratically new xD for the upcoming Jeep Renegade for my wife, so she can safely and comfortably handle that road. I'll MadMax the Protege. Lol.

The commute would be nasty, 46 miles each way, including 2.5 miles on a dirt road.
The whole area south and south east of lake matthews, a lot of which (like this) is unincorporated Riverside county has a number of properties in the couple acre range, houses in decent condition, on actual roads and stuff for < 400k. Wood Crest, which is a relatively nice horse area is up Van Burn but pretty close to the 91 and has nice houses and properties up to around 5 acres around $500k +- $50k.
What'd you pay for the Volt John? If I do this, eventually I need something with as many mpg as possible. The RAV EV would be perfect(ish) except for the $50k starting price. LOL.

I think so. It has been really slow. I know I've been really busy with work. We need to get this site going again.
Things I have on the burner.
The Cobra - it's currently down with the heads pulled. I'm porting them right now but I just used my last cartridge roll and need to pick some more up. The issue is that Grainger doesn't have them in stock anymore. The last time I bought some was about 18-20 years ago and I think I bought about 15 of them and I just used the last one. I want to pick up 5 or 6 (around $3.00) but to have them shipped to my house they want $11 which I don't want to pay. Luckily my neighbors brother works for Grainger and he's going to see if he can get them for me. If not I'll just pay the $11 but I hope not. Once I get those I can finish porting them and the I'll order the valve seals, keepers and head gaskets so I can put it back together.
The Chevelle - since the Cobra is down I haven't been able to pick up anything for the Chevelle to fix the trans. It will be a slow build of the trans.
The F100 - I've been working on the hood now and then trying to get all the rust off the under portion.
The Explorer - it's been running great and I finally got to take a wheeling out at Truck Haven this last weekend. It was an Explorer event and should have magazine coverage but we'll see. The official run we did on Saturday was way too easy and I did the whole thing in 2wd. Later that day I went out with some of the guys and did some harder stuff. I managed not to break an axle which is good. I carry a spare with me just because I've broken 4. I think I have the frontend set up better now so hopefully I won't break any more. I did manage to break the passenger side mirror by leaning into a wall while climbing up a stepped hill. I replaced it though because I also have spare mirrors. I picked up a couple from P-A-P just because I've broken a couple. I also have spare tail lights.

Yeah fellas, I haven't done a thing to promote the site in a long while, including no cruises or meets, so it's down to OGs right now. Over the last several years I haven't had play scratch either so kind of limited. I traded the Jeep to Adam for legal retainer services, and have transferred the Snake to Adam as well (he'll pick up in a year) and the Fox to Carlos. They'll see them through to completion where they were on their way to indefinite pile-o-stuff with me. Sold the Miata, CarMaxx gave me a surprisingly good price.
On the upside, things have turned around a little for money. I'm keeping the Vette and will take a look at what is apparently a cam-knock here in the not too distant future. If I get that big rural property, probably convert my mom's large horse trailer into a car hauler; I'd literally have to trailer the Vette out to drive it. LOL. Might get UATV like a Grizzly too. And finally, swap the wife's pretty much new xD for the upcoming Jeep Renegade. In a year or so, depending on how much of a beating my little Protege can take on that dirt road, might get one of the upcoming plug-in hybrid SUVs, either a Mitsubishi or Volvo. We're adding charging stations here at work, so juicing up would be free, dropping my energy costs for trans portion potentially close to zero. I'll start another thread on stuff I might be able to do to my protege to get it to ride better over a rural road.

K20
I bought a NOS Dana 60 that I've been refreshing. New high steer arms, new bearings all around. I also bought a set 1 ton deaver springs That i'm really excited about. I need to make a cutout for my transfer case cross member to allow the drive shaft to not hit it at full droop.
CTS-V
I still need to install the front brakes. I have a recall on the fuel pump that they need to get parts for. At the same time i'm going to see if the dealer will do the clutch. I'll also install a new Master cylinder and new shiftier and linkage at the same time.
Volt
So i've owned the car for a little over 3 weeks, I love the thing, she rides nice and is great to drive to LA everyday.
I'm been able to average about 102 mpg over 2900 miles

Did you tell him that when he jumps the truck that he shouldn't have it full throttled bouncing off the rev limiter when he lands?
What did he says went out? The 8.8 is a fairly strong year end. I've broke the carrier in the Cobra but that was at the strip and after a few years of 6000 rpm launches with 450+ rwhp. I've also broke the carrier pin in the Explorer but that was my own fault because I cut the pin down to clear the 4.56 ring gear. My guess is he did something to cause it.

I did not work on this rear end Ben.
I had to ask the guy to explain what happened a few times to try and get the picture right. He said the rear driveshaft went out at first and then after more questions he said something on the "rear axle drive shaft" failed. I am not even totally sure what it is and I am not sure he even knows. He said it would cost $1,500 to $2,000 to fix and that would lead me to believe that the entire axle needs to be replaced. I am sure I will talk to him again (he still needs to get the suspension lift and stock fenders from me) so once he gets it fixed I will find out exactly what happened. The small amount of cash I got for the truck is looking better and better.

Besides for that price just buy an complete axle and switch it out yourself and you would have an upgraded unit. He does not have that ability though so he is stuck paying labor. Not my problem though so oh well.

CHRIS HARRIS ON CARS - Mercedes AMG GT S - YouTube
It blows anything I've driven before right out of the water. I will have one some day... swoon. They had a little autox course setup at the end of the day, and you bet I turned off all the nannies, put it in Race mode with manual shifting, and got very sideways. Killed a couple cones in the process. Also, when I was trailing one of the instructors (all were german racecar drivers that were flown in!) out on the big track, I was able to keep up and push him a bit. After we get out, he says, "This isn't your first time on a track, is it?" I was surprised the cars didn't overheat out in the desert pushing it on the track, some of the previous AMGs lacked enough cooling and the transmission would get waaaay hot and go into limp mode. No such problems with these :)
AMG built that car from the bottom up, and it kicks the SLS' ass. Biturbo V8, 500hp 480tq, 3400ish lbs, 47:53 front rear weight split, DCT. Intake manifold is on the bottom of the heads, exhaust comes out on the top, turbos mounted right in the V! They made the exhaust sound amaaaaaazing, and you can occasionally hear the turbos sucking up all the air since they're right in front of you on top of the engine. And of course, many pops and burbles on demand, love it. Entire drivetrain is on electronically controlled mounts, so it can be a smooth cruiser or track bruiser when you want it.
They're coming out with a black series version further down the line, and maybe a Porsche GT3 like version as well. Can't even imagine how those will turn out, the regular one is superb!
Also drove some of the other AMGs, absolutely loved the S63. It can hustle hard in the canyons when you want it to, or you can sit back and cruise in total comfort in the great cocoon of leather and aluminum/wood. Greatest seat I have sat in of all time, car or not!

Didn't watch the video but what do you mean valvetrain is on electronically controlled mounts? You mean the cams are electronically shifted for different profiles or there are no cams but electronically actuated valves (sort of holy grail of valve train control)?

Drivetrain! 2 mounts up front that the engine sits on, and 2 mounts at the rear that the whole rear end and transmission sit on. So you can have it be smooth as silk, nice and supple when you're cruising - or have everything firmed up to the point of drivetrain/chassis becoming one, excellent spirited driving performance :)

So a co-worker has a hook-up on Toyo tires and the Mach was in dire need of some new shoes so I got a set of Proxes 4plus from him for a great deal. His buddy owns a shop in Garden Grove (Rim and Tire Center) and said to take them over there and he would mount them for $15 each. That was a good deal so I went over there after work a little over a week ago now After a couple of failed attempts the owner said he could not mount the rears due to a poor rim design. He said there was no recessed area on the inside of the rim to fit the tire into to make it easier to get the tire on and off the rim. He said he did not want to risk scratching them. I had him do the fronts which we no big deal and thought I would just take them to Firestone the next day and have them do it. I paid, hopped in the car and went home. The next morning I went to Firestone and looked at the rim that the shop the night before had tried to mount my tire to and noticed a few pretty good scratches on it. The shop had scratched my rim anyway. I called the shop later that day and the owner was not there so they took my name and contact info down. After almost a week of no call back I called again and spoke with the owner. He said the rim came in without a scratch and left without a scratch and that he could not account for what happened to the rim after it left his shop. He said I should have said something about it before I left his shop. After going back a forth for a while it was evident he was not going to fix his mistake. As a result I got a scratched rim for christmas! Note to self, always check the shop's work before leaving.

It really depends on your values, and in your case, AZ and TX, maybe NV are about the best. CA is great in a lot of ways if you have money, but it's just a bit of a bitch if you don't.

I have been looking at houses pretty seriously over the past few months, I would REALLY like to keep the blue car, but, i'm not sure I can pull the trigger on a purchase this year like I intend to while having a nice bank cushion without selling it. The more I research the more I realize all the shit that comes along with it, not just the down payment. So in an attempt to save it, I'm going full liquidation on everything else. Meaning if it's not needed for completion of the car, its gone. No matter how minor of a part, it's being photographed and sold. It will take an assload of time, be a major hassle with dealing with jacktards, but if it gets me a place, and keeps my car it's worth it.
Also setting up a pretty aggressive savings schedule, fortunately being on competition prep allows me to save serious coin on food since I all eat is canned tuna, rice, peanut butter and avocados, well as much as anyone who consumes 3980 calories a day can save. I stopped going out, no more vegas, no more clubbing, no more dating, only cash being spent is on making the car complete in the even that I need to sell it, and it will be so it can be sold at a premium, because if I do have to sell it, i'm not going to give it away, if I don't have to sell it, it'll be done before I buy and require nothing but consumables.
This is just a plan, things could go horribly south like they have been for the past few years, but i'm done fucking around, side work, hocking shit, whatever I have to to rathole as much cash as possible.

It's a viable plan and having your own home, however problematic has its own upsides too.
But there's only so far you can go with working for yourself and saving, unless you're at the mad bank level of a star athlete, international banker, etc. BUT, even if you're dead middle class, you can work up to some pretty good scratch if you want it and catch a few breaks along the way. For that you have to build a business where ultimately other people are making money for you and investing in assets that create value. "Earned income" ain't gonna get it and there is only so much upside to saving. Technically there is no upper limit to income. For you, the closest obvious possibility I suppose is *maybe* taking up your dad's biz depending on where he is at. The other areas you know well are cars and martial arts. You're not lazy; the same energies applied towards building and expanding a business might turn into having the house of your dreams, just writing a check for a GT and so on. This does require an entirely different mindset than employee or even self employed, but is the way up. I can technically "afford" a lot more than tinkering on the old Vette. I don't spend there because I'm putting it back in to building up what I can repeatedly with the idea of being zero bullshit financially free by 50. I'm not any kind of genius at this but I am doing it and the pattern, while not for the faint of heart, does work. That's 10 years and 10 years goes fast, but it is in reach. Think hard about what you really want over life and what is available to you and spend your energy there. You might have much higher upper limits than you suspect.
I want to be clear though. There is nothing wrong with simply working hard as an employee somewhere, earning your money, and saving towards the things you want. It is in some sense no question a simpler process. My point is that outside some exceptions, it is limited. The balance of values and goals is entirely up to you.

I am going to be a cop, no question. That's my dream, it's what I always wanted to do, I got VERY close last time which means I'll be better prepared for when I reapply. I have no reservations about starting a business after I retire, but this plan is building blocks to getting hired. Having my own home at a relatively young age should help ease any concerns a hiring board has with employing me.
I know you and I do not see eye to eye on the LEO thing, nor do alot of people, but I will accept nothing less than a badge. Ultimately I'd love to do what I do now for some academy, CHP gave me a conditional offer equal to what they pay people with masters degress and doctorates to start in the academy. It's a very specialized skill set that fits the law enforcement world very well, and if I can train officers to stop accidentally killing people, that would be pretty ok.
Vettezuki
01-27-2015, 02:54 PM
When cops investigate and find real criminals, or on occasion actually stop a real crime, etc., they do a great service. CHP has additional functions to keep dip hits off the road, make the environment safer when things go badly, and that's good too. Most all of the rest is total nonsense, though the source starts at a higher level. If you can at least get some cops to be marginally more competent in their use of force, that would be a positive. So keep at it.

I've been playing in a basketball league with my neighbor for the passed few months. We just finished our third season on Monday and took first place with a 9-1 record but lost the championship game that night. It happened with about 2 minutes left in the first half. I didn't know that I fractured anything, I just thought I sprained it so I iced it during half time and then started the second half. I scored 4 more point during the 4 minutes I played but then my ankle started getting to me. We were up by 11 points when I went out but we ended up losing by 4.

It sucks. The law is not especially clear in some areas and there are so many details that it's easy to have this kind of situation. CA FFLs are very weary of losing their license so they tend to be very conservative in interpretation.
Also, a district court just upheld that the roster and microstamping is not an undue burden, so the chances of any new handguns AT ALL hitting the roster is pretty small at this time.

I should have said I work better under pressure and with a deadline. If I don't set a goal for myself I won't enforce it.

We should do a MG gun day again, it's been 6 years I think since we all went out.

Yeah. That was a while ago already. Sounds like fun. I'm sure Chuckles would be down. I can bring my expert free loading technique. ;)

It doesn't feel that long ago but I came across some pics in my photobucket dated 2009.
As usual, I have no issue supplying the hardware as long as *some* ammunition is supplied. Prices today are a hell of alot different than 6 years ago.
Maybe we can prod John and Ron to come out this time since it's SUCH a drive for them :smack:

I'll set it up, schedule is tight with Knotts and what not, but I put something together after.

For my brother to go it would have to be a Sunday with plenty of advanced notice. I know for sure I'm out at least May 17, June 7, June 14.
