Machine work is finished. Crank came in but to my surprise the box wasn't packed at all, and there's some rust on the #1 journal. So the crank pretty much rounded out the box it came in, sent it off to be checked for straightness and to see if the journal needs to be machined.

Hopefully it's straight and only needs to be polished.

That's what I'm hoping for, my rings and bearings come in mid next week, then I can drop it off at the balancer.

Been gathering shit, should be soon.
So I had some timing issue the last time we went to the dyno, turns out the aftercooler was completely plugged. Tried everything I could to clear it out, then finally used hydrocloric acid and that caused it to start to sweat on the charge side. I was able to trade some parts and some a/c work for a brand new one. String of good deals have befallen me and I am almost there, just need my rings to come in and everything else goes off the the balancer.

Dropped off the rods today, should be done by next thursday.
Also grabbed my ARP goodies, flywheel bolts, cam bolt and balancer bolt. This thing is gonna make big power this time, might as well stop cutting corners.

I just look at the pictures.

This build should do a lot better than the last one. Are you going to run the cam Joey made for you? I haven't called him yet but I think my issue might have been the intake gasket and not the cam. Have you spoken to him? If you do talk to him can you just have him check the lobes and if everythings good then pick it back up from him? I'll just hold onto it and maybe one day put it back in either the Cobra or maybe put it in the Explorer.

Are you going to take the car back to Steve once you finish it and retune it?

Yes, I'm going to run the same cam. When I dropped it off I asked him to check the lobes, haven't talked to him since I dropped it off. I'll pick it up and maybe I'll install it to have the short block read to go and just give you mine, since they're identical and all. You could probably sell that can for $150 or more, it's really a good ccan .

I will take it back to Steve, the car had way too much compression and a faulty cooler plus I have some fuel upgrades so it'll need a good final tune.

94cobra69ss396
08-23-2013, 10:51 AM
Did you get new fuel rails?

Shaolin Crane
08-23-2013, 11:01 AM
I have those SN cobra fuel rails here, I'm gonna make some new fuel lines using the larger Russell EFI fittings, Steve was saying that's where the stock rails have the hardest time. Cheaper than doing a full fuel system and should give me enough fuel for 600rwhp hopefully. I'll drive that until I get bored with it.

94cobra69ss396
08-23-2013, 11:46 AM
Yeah, Steve told me the stock rails on my car would support 600rwhp so you should be good.

Shaolin Crane
08-23-2013, 12:00 PM
My chassis rails are the problem. They're one size smaller then yours, I might pillage some from the yard and change them over, again, as a cheap upgrade. All the fittings I have are 2 sizes overstock soI'm hoping that's enoughh.

Thanks, Also using entirely 100% found parts from forums and craigslist.

Picked up my rotating assembly friday before Justin and I left for Vegas. Crank needed no mallory which is a HUGE plus. Just small amounts of material removal. Rods had just a touch of material removed as well. Rod finished by media blasting the decks of the pistons, apparently this strengthens the pistons by 2-5x a standard forging. All for $175.

Since I don't have a bolt stretch gauge i'm going to assemble it all tomorrow and torque the rod bolts when I get one. Rod commented he hopes i'm not putting a 1500hp capable rotating assembly in a stock block

He said these parts won't even sneeze at 1000rwhp in a boss block. Which is exactly what I like to hear.

Everything went fine up until I realized I was shorted a ring, well the center spring section of the oil ring set.
Since I want the ability to grow in the future I set the ring gaps a little larger than a standard boosted application. .65mm on the top ring, and .76mm on the bottom ring.

So I put 7 pistons in until I can track down another spring ring, everything else went fine. Just need to torque everything down once I get a stretch gauge and bring my torque wrench to the shop.

Here's the pretty stuff

Shaolin Crane

end play or compression?
There was almost zero end play and the bearings all came in around .0021. since these are coated high crush bearings they run a tad tighter. But should be fine overall.

I have not, i'm out of space so i'm going to assemble it, then pull it and transer stuff over as i remove it.

However apparently even I do not know the bounds to the shit in my shop, i found another set of rings I didn't even know I had, so i'm good on that front. Also found a few amsoil oil filters

Shaolin Crane
09-03-2013, 03:59 PM
Finally got the last piston installed
All the rod side clearances came in a .50mm. Considered loose for a stock assembly but fine for a stickshift car using chamfered rods. Checked with Dick and he said up to .75mm is fine for this type of motor.

Shaolin Crane
09-09-2013, 04:27 PM
Finally torqued everything down. Main studs took 110lbs, side studs took 55lbs, rod bolts took 96lbs for a .006 stretch. Had I not purchased the gauge there would have been no way to know they needed that much torque. Goes to show how much stronger the MSA bolts are over ARP bolts.

Installed the cam and checked endplay, can't find the keyway so I had to order one before I degreed the cam. Also i'm going to order new lifters, I tried rebuilding another set but they were too worn out to be saved. So i'm stalled until I get more funds.

Uhm, the stretch gauge is measuring stretch. High strength rod bolts aren't measured in torque to be fastened, they are given a stretch rating, usually between .005-.007 for which they have optimum hold.

Shaolin Crane
09-15-2013, 11:41 AM
Posted up a WTB thread over on c-c. Had two people offering them to me for that price, standard duty and the race duty one that I bought. I already have the springs for it, just need subframes.

The race duty one has the same rating as the standard duty arm, so I'm going to pull the HD arm off the track car and switch them. I don't need the gray car to handle a full on 7k clutch dump, but the blue car will.

Degreed the camshaft tonight. it was a complete cluster fuck, but for other reasons. anywho, Ron was having an issue with this one coming into spec. I started off by installing it at the 6* advanced like he did. here's what I got
112.5 LC
215/220
-5 & 40
-1.5 & 41

These are no where near the specs on the card, so I installed it at the 4* like in my motor and here's what I got
114 LC
217/217

So like I thought the cam was too advanced and makes sense why it came in at 112. Now it's right on the money and came in perfectly.

That doesn't make sense. If you retard the cam 2 degrees the the IO would occur 2 degrees later and would be -3 instead. The duration at 0.050 will be the same no matter whether the ICL is 112 or 114.

Shaolin Crane

Then the only answer is the cam is asymmetrical. I checked it, over and over, did it probably 20 times tconfirrm, it was right on.

94cobra69ss396
09-22-2013, 11:45 AM
That doesn't explain it. An asymmetrical lobe just has a different closing profile than opening profile. The IO would still occur at -3 if you retarded it 2 degrees and the duration at .050 would still be 215/220 no matter what the ICL is.

I have no clue then, I only degreed it once at 6* then a few dozen times at 4*
I even installed it at 8* to see the change at it was at 110.5 but didnt do the rest, It was about 3 am and I was low on sleep to begin with. Put it back at 4* and it came in the same every time, -5 and 217. I'm not going to pull it back out to try and track it down.

Don't know much about cams other than what they do generally. What's IO and ICL?

94cobra69ss396
09-22-2013, 03:56 PM
IO is Intake Open and ICL is the Intake Center Line. The cam grinder sets the ICL for the cam and all the corresponding specs (IO, IC, EO, EC). If you advance or retard the cam then you also change all those values. So if the cam should have a -5* IO installed at 114 ICL by advancing it 2* to 112 the IO should occur at -7*.

That's why I don't see how it came in at -5 when installed at both 4 and 6 degrees advanced.

Just trying to visualize. If it's supposed to be -5* retarded andyou advance it +2*, should the result be -3*? I'm just thinking of a circle. 0* -5* +2* = -3* from 0*.

Duration is open to close. So if its asymmetrical and closing sooner it would have effectively less duration. (Assuming it wasnt designed that way, and its just one or some lobes with that issue)

But I agree, changing the ICL wouldnt change duration.

Actually, the numbers we are talking about is at .050. So they are not from opening to closing.

I stopped trying to figure it out, it's a regrind so it's a bit different than a normal shelf cam. I do know that it came in exactly what was on the card at 4* and I checked multiple times,I even started over completely to finding TDC and it was still the same. Shawn told me why it needed to be installed at 4* and not 6* but I forgot. Other than that, I have no idea why it is the way it is. However I do owe you for the ccam.

Tune went ok, Steve worked on some driveability issues, starting issues, etc. When it came time to make power the fuel pressure would drop off anywhere between 3900-4300rpm. So he said either a line is kinked, which I doubt since I replaced them all, or the hose that is on the pump inside the pickup blew apart. I'll drop the tank some time this week and probably redo the fuel lines with Russel fittings and SS braided lines just to be safe.

Still made 400rwhp/420rwtq @4200rpm and 11.57 psi with a TON of tire spin, enough that they were blowing smoke like a train. So next time I need some sticky tires before we strap it down. He figures in its current state, at at 4200 its making 450ish and has no doubts 600rwhp can be squeezed out of it.

Steve's rollers are worn. I had the same issue when he tuned the Cobra when he tried to make the pulls in 4th gear. He ended up making the pulls in 5th to keep it from spinning.

The car is also pretty light, and I have some shitty 255 hancooks with a 400 wear rating. Its also how the car makes power, since the boost comes on so quick it shocks the tires loose. It shouldn't be a problem next time.

I've been tinkering with it off and on for the past few months. I finished one of the seats brackets and mounted the new ignition box under the seat.

Also mounted the spare and cut the carpet to fit around the battery box. The tire and jack tools were from the cobra.

Then cleaned the interior and finished mounting 99% of everything and hosed it off to get it preppedish for Knotts this weekend.

Don't know why the floor mat looks so bad, it was a little wet but looks like its trashed

Finally finished the tune. Same issue as last time, no traction, so no numbers, but my budget fuel system worked like a charm. I have a video, and you can see the tire smoke on the dyno. It makes power so abruptly that not even a pull in 5th gear worked. At 2700 rpm it is seeing 11.47PSI. Steve thinks its in the 600 range but wants me to come back with slicks.

What is the deal with the traction esse? You aren't making hazing numbers, so unless your tires suck, his dyno needs some attention.

I've said it a few dozen times now, my tires suck. The way it makes power doesn't help either

Plus the rollers on Steve's dyno no longer have the cross hatch that help the tires bite. They are worn almost flat.

Sounds pretty pointless.

He was able to make a 5th gear pull on the Cobra with my street tires spinning and they're a pretty hard tire. Guy is going to borrow my slicks the next time he goes so they can get a good pull.

Sounds pretty pointless.

It wasn't an issue with the NT05's or the Drag Radials, but now I have some 500TW tires that I will remove eventually. He wants slicks because of the shock to the tires.

He starts the pull at 2k, and by 2700 it's already 11.47psi. Power is essentially instant.

Try dropping the psi to like 12?

Why would I do a stupid thing like that?
