Almost one year and still not done :(
Just been doing tinker shit, blasted the spindles and made them look all purdy, still trying to track down all the interior goodies. Paint is going to happen, eventually i guess.

There's rushing, and then there's sitting with your thumb up your ass. I've passed the latter a long time ago, everything is ready for installation. I could have it running in a few hours if i got it back already.

Dude i took a 3 wood to one of them, doesnt make a difference when there are 15-20 stray cats cause of the park behind us. I'd have to give them all an attitude adjustment. Just not possible, few times i thought about capping them with the 9mm.

There's no interior in it now, honestly the main reason for wrapping it is to keep them from peeing on the fresh primer and body work. Everything else i'd rather deal with then that.

ARP wheel studs came in today. Just need a diff cover and NRC brackets and i'm set for the rear end.

Rear suspension currently consists of:
MM Weight jacker control arms
MM panhard bar
03/04 cobra rebuild kit for explorer carrier
3.73 gears
Welded axle tubes
Boxed upper control arms
31sp Hardened Superior axles
KYB Street shocks and eibach reds.

Hopefully i can add a torque arm for cheap. If not this set up will do just fine on a street car. No NHV but still very solid and will handle the power with ease.

Shaolin Crane
06-01-2012, 05:14 PM
So these came in yesterday along with the bearing kit
http://i524.photobucket.com/albums/cc322/ShaolinCrane/IMAG1206.jpg
http://i524.photobucket.com/albums/cc322/ShaolinCrane/IMAG1205.jpg

Had a fun experience while pressing the studs into the axles. I accidentally dropped the steel block used to brace the axles while pressing right on my foot above my steel toes. I spun the axle for the next stud and looked away and the block tipped over and fell about 4' onto my foot. Loud pop and now nice and swollen.

So this has been a very depressing paint process, last night we were literally minutes away from clear when irwindale PD decided to fuck us over. Said "what the fuck? Think you can polute the whole city?" "no officer, irwindale does a pretty good job of that on its own"

He said to clear out or we're going to jail, which is hilarious, but i wasnt in the position to argue since i didnt have my sema hobbyist paint agreement. So now i need to buy another gallon of paint and rent a booth :(

From another forum regarding my issue

I sent a request to the EPA for information about "are there any special rules for hobbyist auto painters?"

I just got very nice reply from Kim Teal, Environmental Protection Specialist, U.S. EPA, North Carolina (teal.kim@epa.gov)

I ASKED THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:

I would like to know where I can find EPA regulations related to “Hobbyist Automotive Painters”. I tried the www.epa.gov website FAQ but could not locate any related information.

Is there a provision that allows a hobbyist to paint 1 or 2 cars per year? Are there simple guidelines for disposal of solvents, paints and for cleaning equipment? Do hobbyists need to be certified (licensed) in order to buy paint, etc?

Please provide a “link” to EPA Guidelines on Hobbyist Automotive Painting rules & regulations

Thanks in advance,

Bob Sheridan La Verne, CA 91750

KIM TEAL RESPONDED BACK AS FOLLOWS:

Mr. Sheridan,

The regulation you're referring to is actually for autobody refinishing shops; however, we had many questions about what activities qualify as hobbyist and so we added a definition to this rule clarifying what we consider to be hobbyist activities. See pages 1745 (last column),

COMMENTS: Several comments noted that the applicability of the proposed rule, as written, could be interpreted to apply to all paint stripping and surface coating operations, and included no exemptions for automobile hobbyists or homeowners stripping and painting their own property or vehicles. Nearly all commenters felt that paint stripping and surface coating by hobbyists and homeowners should be exempt from the rule. Several commenters suggested that EPA establish a de minimis usage threshold, based on either major source surface coating rules or state volatile organic compounds (VOC) rules, to exclude noncommercial paint stripping or surface coating operations. The commenters noted that hobbyist and homeowner activities are difficult to locate because they are located in residential areas and are intermittent. However, one commenter suggested that the rule should have no exemptions and any individual painting vehicles should be subject to the proposed equipment and training requirements.

RESPONSE: EPA re-examined the scope of the source categories that we listed based on the 1990 national emissions inventory. The analyses that were the basis for the source category listing for paint stripping, miscellaneous surface coating, and motor vehicle and mobile equipment surface coating focused on commercial operations, along with some government and institutional operations, such as municipal garages that service fleet vehicles. Homeowners and hobbyists were not part of these analyses and were not intended to be part of the listed source categories. Therefore, the final rule has been revised to clarify that it does not cover paint stripping and surface coating performed by individuals on their personal vehicles, possessions, or property, either as a hobby or for maintenance. This subpart also does not apply when these operations are performed by individuals for others without compensation, which is akin to the hobbyist and homeowner activities not considered in the baseline inventory that formed the basis for the listing of the source categories at issue here. However, for motor vehicle and mobile equipment surface coating operations, an individual surface coating more than two vehicles per year will be covered by the rule. This limit on the number of vehicles coated per year was included so that commercial automobile surface coating shops could not avoid compliance by claiming to be a hobby shop. The limit was based on information collected from automobile hobbyists during the rule development. The hobbyists that provided information to the EPA suggested that a legitimate hobbyist would complete no more than two automobile restorations or customizations per year.

* * * 1760 What This Subpart Covers § 63.11169 What is the purpose of this subpart? Except as provided in paragraph (d) of this section, this subpart establishes national emission standards for hazardous air pollutants (HAP) for area sources involved in any of the activities in paragraphs (a) through (c) of this section. This subpart also establishes requirements to demonstrate initial and continuous compliance with the emission standards contained herein. * * * § 63.11169 (d) This subpart does not apply to any of the activities described in paragraph (d)(1) through (6) of this section. * * * § 63.11169 (d) (3) Surface coating or paint stripping performed by individuals on their personal vehicles, possessions, or property, either as a hobby or for maintenance of their personal vehicles, possessions, or property. This subpart also does not apply when these operations are performed by individuals for others without compensation. An individual who spray applies surface coating to more than two motor vehicles or pieces of mobile equipment per year is subject to the requirements in this subpart that pertain to motor vehicle and mobile equipment surface coating regardless of whether compensation is received.

(See attached file: Final Paint Stripping and Misc Surface Coating Area Source Rule.pdf)

In summary, hobbyists have NO requirements under this rulemaking. They are NOT a regulated entity.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

It might be fine by the EPA but you live in CA so it's never that easy. Did you check with CARB? Or with local officials to check the rules around painting of car's?

I know that we should be allowed to paint our own cars on our own property but sometimes the man gets in the way!

EPA is above CARB and there is a special provision for CA residents. Notice the OP lived in lancaster, irwindale doesnt have municipalites like regular cities being its 90% industrial

Got some stuff done today, not a whole lot, but more then yesterday.
Dropped the tank to find out it is bent pretty badly on the drivers side, not like a dent, but folded and creased in an odd fashion, i'll be running it until I can get a new one. Replaced the fucked up fuel lines with the ones from the yard. Finished installing the trans, tightened all the bolts since I didnt have the proper ones yesterday. Installed the a/c system, replaced ALL the seals and vacced it. Holds vacuum just bitchen, I used the old drier however as this was just a test of the system. Once its ready to be fired i'll install the new drier and charge the system with actual r12.
Also did a mild wire tuck, wiring harness still runs along the firewall but the wires now tuck into the fenders. I only did this to increase space in the engine bay, not really anything else. Honestly not a big fan of wire tucks to be honest, but with the power cooler and vortech stuffed into the engine bay it will be nice to have some extra finger room.
Now for dah pics

Is the 340lph going to be the only fuel pump or are you going to run another inline pump? What is the rest of the fuel system going to look like? What horsepower are you looking at? Sorry for shotgunning the questions at you but fuel system upgrades have been on my mind lately.

P.S. The car looks great. Can't wait to see it all together.

Yes, 340lph will be sufficient for my power needs Ron and Justin are both running 255 intake pumps and making in the 4xx range. I have 44lb injectors waiting to be installed once the engine is broken in. Power should be in the 500-550rwhp area.

And thanks, i'm waiting on being able to go to the yard to replace the hacked up fuel tank harness but I expect to fire it this weekend.

So this weekend was half priced day at the yard, got some pretty good stuff. Black rear seat belts, rear seat hardware, various black interior parts I needed, and a bitchen set of LX tails. They were scuffed up and needed some cleaning but not really cracked. So instead of doing them myself it was an excellent time to show Vanessa how to restore plastic herself.

Pretty deep scratches

Been busy fucking with the wiring. Everything is just about operational, I would have been ready to fire but I forgot the pickup the oil saturday so I couldnt start it up. Finished wiring up the battery box and breaker for the alternator, finished the engine wiring, finished making a new fuel tank harness, installed the tank, test fit the heat exchanger, got all the interior electronics worked out. Well except that the car has the wrong instrument cluster in it. So I need to track down one for a 87-89 car as I have a 90-93 cluster. Here are the pics.

PM ls1z28, he was telling something that's commonly used in H/VAC and quite cheap is basically the same as Dyamat. But I don't recall exactly what it is, or if you have to go to a contractor supplier instead of Home Depot, etc.

Shaolin Crane
07-31-2012, 07:14 PM
Yes I know about it, peel and seal, jiffy seal, megabond etc. They are NOT the same as hushmat, dynamat extreme, second skin etc.

The problem with the roofing, hvac, flooring and other insulators is they're asphalt based. Auto motive sound deadener, the good shit is 100% butyl, nothing less.

Asphalt based products are good for a MAX of 130*

Butyl based products are good for 400-500*

This means it can be installed in every portion of the vehicle without worrying about melting and seeping out of body panels. Best of all, no smell.

So I showed up the morning after the headliner and it was sagging so I re sprayed it with tile glue, seems to be holding for now. I also finished some bits of the dash in preparation of interior, re-keyed the glove box lock and started cleaning all the shit out of it. Then I welded the cracks in the floor pan up, and realized why my welds looked extra shitty, there was a tiny piece of wire stuck in the line, works great now. I also installed the seat belts and i'm hoping I get most of the interior installed this weekend. I still need to make the amp rack and run all the stuff for the stereo and make the bolster panel for the back seat. Also trying to think of a unique way to access the amps in the spare tire well. I'm thinking of a trap door kinda thing. Anyways here da pics

Quarter panel finished

Friday I started by making the bolster panel for the rear seats, the foam cushions are thicker on the SN car so they changed the rear upper floor pan, everythingt else is the same, So I used SN carpet and wala, looks factory. Also removed that stupid knuckle for the rearm mount of the cage, glad I didnt rely on that cage cause the welds held like shit.

Also madea simpleamp rack, I was gonna ge all crazy and weld something coo looking but this is lighter and simpler, also made another rack for a piece of plywood to support the weight of the sub when the carpet is installed, then covered them in headliner material to reduce squeeks, but I traded in my phone and my uploads are all fucked up.

Shaolin Crane

He's right, he cant run a cooler if he wants to retain all the accessories. Any A2A cooler needs a drivers side mount which means he'd lose either power steering or A/C. He cant switch to a fox TB setup or he'd lose his cruise control.

Safest place was on the car, there are plenty of other painted pieces I got back that I didnt install but I had somewhere to put them. I just downed about 5 cups of coffee and i'm currently at the shop waiting for everything to warm up. I'm going to be pulling as many all nighters as it takes to make sure the engine and suspension are finished in time.

Many thanks to Ron, again. He came down and helped out my color inept self. Looking back It would have been pretty simple for me to do. Wiring is something I usually take a chance at but didn't want to undo all the wiring I've already done. Especially being a very expensive sensor and what not.

Anyways, I ordered the weld bung for the wide band O2. Finished most of the vacuum lines. Still tons more to be done though. It seems I have all the sensors but the EGR lines are kind of annoying with the amount of shit there is.

Here's the list I need to complete by hopefully tomorrow so I have all week to drive it around some in preparation for the dyno friday.
Finish the exhaust
Torque axle in place
Fill trans with transmission fluid
Install driveshaft and hope the length is right
Wire water pump and finish after cooler hoses
Route mini race bypass hoses
Hook up the breather assembly
Install the clutch cable
Seat rails
Install the dipstick
Check all fasteners and clean up loose wires
Drive it sorta hard

Still waiting on my O2 bung i ordered days ago from a company about 10 miles away. Not happy cause i need it to finish the exhaust, i havnt got to work on it much but tonight i'll be here as late as possible. Here's what's left
Weld in bung and finish the exhaust.
Tie up loose wires
Check tightness on everything
Finish water pump lines and wiring
Hook up mini race and breather assembly.
Driveshaft and transmission fluid.
Wire up msd box

I SHOULD be able to do everything today, here's hoping.

Got the MSD in and on the last fucking wire i ran out. So tomorrow i'll have to grab some more. Just put in the bassani catted x-pipe and what a horrendous piece of shit. Hangers dont even come close to lining up, they barely mate to the headers and will probably leak something fierce. If I was under the gun i'd redo everything but for now its in and that's all that matters. When I get it back from tuning i'll go back over the entire car.

Btw, still here working. Gonna hang the mufflers and see how close I eyeballed them.

Got the final piece of the ground effects finally as well. I'm going to button up all the crap that the front bumper covers and then put everything on the car.

Finally all that's left will be fitting the seats into the car and doing the 5 lug stuff.

Not quite stock, forged 31sp axles, welded tubes, carbon fiber clutches in the posi and arp studs. should hold 650rwhp no problem.

Little update. Dropped $600 to get her current with CA. This weekend I hope to finish the body. Maybe the interior depending on time. I've misplaced a few items that is going to hinder me some with the body panels. Interior is essentially "done" just some tedious sewing and bracket making. Stay tuned.

Got around to putting back on the front bumper cover. Or at least trying to, i'm not sure what changed since the first time I fitted the heat exchanger to now but it doesn't fit worth a shit. I had to remove the bumper just to get the cover on. Tomorrow i'll fuck with spacing the bracket and see if I cant get it to mount the right way.

Shaolin Crane
11-30-2012, 12:17 PM
I'm not even talking about the gaps, the front of the hood nearest the bumper touches when it's open. I don't know what i'm gonna do to fit it. I know the bumper cover isn't on properly either but damn.

Shaolin Crane
12-03-2012, 06:54 PM
So I got it to fit the best I could since I cut most of the supports out to fit the heat exchanger. I'm going to make some adjustable bars the pull the cover down to space the hood properly. If not, i'll have to dump the stock latch and just use the hood pins.

Also mounted the rest of the front ground effects, still need to find the rear brace for the back bumper so I can mount it.
Here are the pics, don't know what the vibrancy goes to shit when I upload but here ya go.

Thanks y'all. It still isnt where it needs to be. For whatever reason its still sitting 2" higher then it's supposed to. I did cut out alot of the backing supports to make sure the heat exchanger had room. Its as far back as it could possibly go, if i push down on the bumper i'm able to get it to where it should be, so thats why i'm thinking I need the adjustable rods to pull it down. Over time it will stay that way on its own, but for now I think it should work, i'd really like to be able to close the hood.

Tomorrow I hope to start it up and hear the idle the way it should be. Then this weekend my upholstery guy will be sewing the stitches that go in the center of each door panel for a measly $20. If everything goes well I should have fullish interior this weekend. Minus a few pieces i'm missing. But I hope to have at least some seats.

12-07-2012, 10:53 AM
So I took it for a drive this morning and its running a ton better. Still bucks but it's easier to control now, if I ease into the throttle its completely manageable. Still seems to be running a little funny, sounds like its missing when cold. Has some major exhaust leaks that i'll be fixing tonight with some donuts. I think the loose wiring was one of the causes of the shitty driveability . Still probably need another MAF but i'm going to trace wires before I buy anything else.

Shaolin Crane
12-08-2012, 07:09 PM
Traced down the wires in the MAF conversion and found a wire that wasn't properly crimped, of course it had to be the power wire. Crimped and started it right up, idled like a dream and then I took it for the drive. Hit 3lbs at about 2500rpm and completely annihilated the drag radials and unloaded the front suspension. Still a little lean and the hood wasnt latched so I didn't want to wail on it. Soon though, soon.

Once I finalize the measurements i'll weld them all together and paint them. Then i'll start the drivers side. Saturday i'll do the door panels and hopefully midweek and then that weekend i'll finish the HVAC vacuum lines as well as the smog vacuum lines. Tomorrow I'll hopefully make the brackets for the driver side, clean up the interior and reassemble. Then this weekend, tidy up everything and have the windshield replaced. It'll be a week or two before the door panel stitching is done, but it will essentially have full interior. Then finish the EGR crap and take it for a smog, finish the a/c system and enjoy the fuck out of it.

So if you didn't see in Ron's thread we're getting tuned friday. I have been jamming on the car, assembling interior bits, tracking down why my power windows work but the door locks don't and its because some jack wagon cut the wires for them. Its close. Looks like a car again, just need to wet sand it and buff it.

So friday was fun, I guess. I found out that the car is well capable of 600rwhp on race fuel. Since I was running pump gas and didnt wan't to fuck things up, Steve made slow pulls to see where it would make about 12-14psi. Unfortunately we didnt even make it that far. He started the run around 3k and by 4200 it hit 10.81psi. Massive belt slip happened and he shut it down, he said its likely it slipped so bad because how hard the boost came on. So I need to track down a 3.7" blower pulley to bring it down to around 13psi at 6200. He said even then, its going to make 500rwhp no problem.

Then on the drive home I had the wonderful event of hearing BINK. Broken rocker stud, spent all day today fixing it and other shit I missed. Found out the core of the aftercooler was so mucked up thats why it wasn't flowing. Tossed it in the washer for a few hours and ran some solvents through it and its much better, but still not close to what it needs to be.

Also found out the bypass wasnt even hooked up at all, neither was the vacuum line for it. So I replumed it, added the vacuum line and changed the plugs and plug wires. The car is running MUCH better then it was yesterday. Very pleased so far. Also since the bypass is the way it should be now, the blower reversion has stopped and the car should pass smog.

Car made 372.2rwhp and 420rwtq at 4200 rpm. It has ALOT more to go...

So after breaking 2 rocker studs in 5 miles I realized I didn't use ARP studs like I thought. So I swapped them all out today for the ARP ones and ragged on it a bit. Nothing borken yet, however I did develop a massive exhaust leak and apparently an oil leak from the PCV valve at the back of the engine. I'm going to replace it with a positive pressure PCV valve and silicone it in place. Anyone else have an idea why oil might be blowing out of there?

The PCV valve has to be able to handle boost or it's gonna leak by. I picked up a check valve from McMaster Carr for like $10 shipped and installed it and works great. Used it on my Eclipse and the Typhoon with no issues. I can look up the part number if you're interested.

Its only because its making too much power for my setup. As soon as I slow the blower down it'll be fine. And I like blowers over turbos because I can pass smog, have instant boost oh and pass smog.

Yeah, just giving you a hard time. I flushed it out the best I could with purple clean but its stillbad. I'm gonna pour a gallon of CLR into the tank and let it run for a couple hours. Hopefully it wont fuck up the pump.

3.7" pulley is on the way, so as soon as that goes on I should be able to rag on it. Tune seems to be done so far, i'll know more after the swap, just won't know how much it makes.

Today i'm gonna work on cleaning and hiding wires, finishing seat bracket, painting window trim etc. Mainly everything that makes it look like a car. Stitching for the door panels should be done this week sometime then I can assemble the doors, need to replace the drivers side wiring harness in the door since some jackass cut the wiring harness and it controls the power door locks. Windows work though.

I also need my damn gauge cluster to come in, every time I track it it's been pushed back a day, it went out monday of last week and isnt expected until tuesday. Not happy.

It'll make me happy if this is the cause of my overheating issue under WOT

Dumb question, but what hose are you using on your lower radiator hose?

A stock radiator just won't handle all that extra heat under boost, low boost maybe.

It wasnt stock. The issue was gunk inside and a fowling fan clutch. Now my issue is the car doesn't get hot enough. After ragging on it 140* was the hottest I could get it, it won't go into open loop so I guess it's time to try out different thermostats

All iI'm doing is fixing the motor that's in there now. No changes to anything else except some carbonate coating.
