Some of you know me some don't have a damn clue who I am ( and probably don't care ).
I work for what some consider as the largest GM restoration parts supplier, as their Senior Tech. We cover "F", "B", "X" and truck restoration parts and a number of GM suppled parts as well. We are now going into other Vehicle lines in the near future.
This is for back ground only and this is not a "official" endorsement of the company. I have access to a wealth of information on these vehicles. I will be here from time to time to help anyone that may have questions on these vehicles. If I can't supply the answer I can probably send you in the right direction.

My friend's dad has a 68 Camaro. His current sub-frame is rusted. Do you recommend trying to track down an original, or going with an aftermarket? He doesn't want to spend a small fortune either. What do you think? I like having our own onsite classic car guru for the record

Ok, this is the way it is. The original sub-frame was a poor design. There is a lot of bump steer and understeer in the original design. You can go with an original -tough to find for a descent price. But, there is hope, here is what interchanges;
67 thru 69 F bodies-Camaro-F/B- 69 is tricky from the bird.
68 thru 74 X bodies, which include;
Nova
Omega
Ventura
Apallo

After Market sub frames;
All include Disc brakes and Rack and Pinion steering.
Chassisworks $4,800 to $6,500-- all the good stuff
Heidt's $3,700 to $6,700 --good stuff also

If you go original, there are some fixes by Golden West Suspensions, Heidts and Hotchkis (my favorite). They would include contol arms, coil overs, sway bars, and rack and pinion steering. Lots you can do here, more than I can list.

I have a question.

Does GM have a suggested part number for a deep wall socket that fits over the windage tray stud / main bolts?

They used them in the first Z28s, late model LT1s, Vortecs, and prolly a few in between.

I'm having a hard time finding a deep wall socket deep enough to fit over the stud to get an accurate torque reading.

I just did this last year with my new 400. I use the old style LT1 windage tray on the 400. I just used the 1/2 inch drive deep impact sockets that I got at Harbor Frieght (cheap). Worked real good.

Great suggestion. I checked and couldn't find my Harbor Freight sockets, but I did have a set of Metric impact deep walls, and the 17 fit perfect. It's about .5" taller than my standard deep wall, and it fits the bolt tight and snug.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have been searching every local parts store for a deeper deep wall socket with no success. I have done some work to a few late model Vortec blocks and used a socket from a friend's set, but he moved and I didn't have one to finish putting a windage tray and studs on the bottom of my 405.
