Default Hard Starting

The one buck truck, GMC 1500 w/5L, runs ok once it is started, and then for the rest of the day. But it is a bitch to get started in the morning. It takes like maybe ten attempts before it will finally turn. At the beginning of each crank it sounds like it wants to start right up, but then the engine just turns. If I put starter fluid, which is a little tedious because you have to take off the TB bonnet, it fires right up, so I'm guessing this is some kind of fuel issue. The filter is relatively new. Plugs, wires, and ignition control module is all new(ish). What say ye?

Sounds like your FPR or pump is leaking by and the pressure drops to nothing. Try turning the key to the on position and let the pump run for a few seconds, then start it up.

I'll try that again, but AIR, doesn't help. Thanks for the input. Wonder if it's just a somewhat weak pump?

It just sounds like it has to build up fuel pressure before it will start. Could be a weak fuel pump as well.

Try turning the keep a few times before attempting to start it. Every time you turn the key the injectors squirt fuel.

The pump assembly has plastic lines from from the pump to the pump mount. They can get pinholes that bleed down after shut off, and take a while to build pressure back up. The hole might not be big enough to keep it from running, but will cause long crank times... If it has the sequential injection, the pressure regulator can leak also, but it could cause rough running-hot start issues , since the fuel leaks into the manifold... 1. Check the fuel filter.

2. Check the fuel pump power/ground, Gray and Black wires.

3. If OK, replace the fuel pump.

Prime it twice with the key before you start it. When you turn the key to the run position it turns the fuel pump on for 2 seconds, you can hear it whining. With the key turn it on, off, on, off, then crank.
