My CTS has been giving me some trouble for the past few weeks, so i took her in to a shop (corvette specialty) and after about 2 weeks of them not looking at her i got a call saying that i'll need a new motor, cuz I've lost compression and one of my rod's is about to break. Well i asked for a quote and they said $10,000,

First if all that is true it would only require a re-build not a brand new ls2.
Second I'm looking for a shop that can give me a second opinion.


So does anyone know of any good shop's near the IE

What shop did you take it to? That sounds fucked up. How are they determining that a rod is getting ready to fail. I can't imagine a rod deforming to the point that you can see something and not failing. I seriously doubt that they did any kind of non destructive test. like a liquid penetrating test. Call Charlie at RPM or A & A motorsports. I would call Charlie first only because he has done a couple of budget builds for friend of mine. RPM has a full machine shop so they can do all the work in-house. You could by a used LS2 for less than $4K run that while you upgrade the old motor with the good stuff. Also I would recommend upgrading the rods, pistons, and fasteners while you have the motor out. You can get some really quality (but not forged) stuff that will live forever in a NA motor. If you are looking to spend some coin then I would recommend the Vette Doctor's. They have been pumping out some of hte strongest ls3 and ls2 based stroker motors. As a reference point I was quoted $8K for a GMPP LS3 (Brand fucking new) installed and tuned.

The shop was corvette specialty in riverside, I don't know what they did to find any of this out but i'm sure as hell going to get this in writing on whats wrong.


In the worst case and they are right then i'm going to rebuild, forged and stroked her, i cant see that running more then 5k

What does a rod look like that's almost about to break? Either it's cracked, which they would have said, or it's not. And who would really pull off the oil pan to even look for something like that? What are the odds?

I don't buy it. Take it elsewhere. Ask for the compression readings, post them.

I would give Custom Built Motors in Rancho Cucamonga a call. Ask to talk to the owner Bruce mckillop and tell him you were referred by Phil Cooper. These guys bulid a ton of custom LS motors. Well i picked up the car this morning before going to work.

To me it sounds like a main bearing has let go, but i'm not an expert so i'm gonna have it towed to Don Lee in rancho and have them look at it.
