The smartest thing you can do is add up the total cost of the wedding and stick that in the bank.
Then, go to Vegas and spend the $100 it costs to have a nice private ceremony that you can have video taped and put on a nice DVD that you can make copies of and send those to the guests who didn't make the trip so they can watch it over and over again.
Use the rest of the money for a down payment on a house or a new car or a vacation or something actually worthwhile besides feeding ego.

Whoa, and I thought I spent a lot at $20k. We rented a nice yacht out of Newport too but we kept it down to 100 people. I saved up for a whole year. I feel your pain man but its worth it to see her and the family happy.
