I remember my Mom would get live shrimp that was packed in sawdust and bring it home. She would take the shrimp out of the saw dust which appeared life less an limp and put the shrimp in cold water. As soon as the shrimp hit the water, they would start flopping around. Next she would put skewer through the shrimp the cook them over hot coals. Yum.

The Japanese are not squeamish about eating things very recently dispatched, or in fact, still alive in some cases. It gets a little bit much even for me sometimes.

That's a traditional Korean thing. I still think a couple Koreans a year die choking on an octopus that gets stuck in their neck trying to climb out. In Japan a couple people a year still manage to kill themselves attempting to prepare Fugu (poisonous blow fish) at home.
