SV650 vs. Older VFR
So I still am Jonsing for a bike a bit. While I'd LOVE to get a Triumph Street Triple, it's a bit pricey and maybe not the best choice for a first bike. I'm kinda down to an Yamaha FZ6 or an Suzukii SV650, but in reading some rider reviews, several guys mentioned the old Honda VFR circa 98 - 01 is even better as an entry level sport/touring bike than the later model SV and FZ. Are they just fan boys or is there something to it? They very specifically said up to 01, not later . . . something about the VTEC they switched to.

Not unless this is your idea of a Cruiser
In this case touring just implies the that it's not a Super Sport, performance only kind of a bike. Something you could commute on, or ride longer distances without being miserable. The seating positions vary a bit, but are generaly more upright and the engines are built/tuned for more torque and mid range for street riding as opposed to something like an R6 which is borderline F1 rev territory with very high power but not so much torque.

If you want torque and a sporty bike, why not a V-Twin? Like a Ducati Monster.

My choice would be the 3 cylinder Triumph, a great compromise between a Twin and I4.
The VFR is a double VTwin (I think) and the SV650 is a twin. The FZ is an I4.

I accidentally found myself in a Ducati dealer the other day. The 09' Monster is pretty cool looking, even more in person than in pictures. A bit pricey though. New, after all the taxes and everything like $10,500. I can get a brand new FZ6 for just over $6k and a brand new SV for about $7k OTD.
