Default Diff

Is this the offroad section?

Went to pick your part today. Found a 4.10 LSD 8.8 diff with disc brakes to replace my friends 3.70 open 7.5 diff with drums on his ranger. Stole the master cylinder too for the brake swap.

This was one of the only two explorers without a tag so we had to spin the driveshaft and count. Four turns of the diff yoke yielding just less than one full turn at the hub means 4.10 right? The next closest available option was a 3.70, which should have been past one full turn at the hub for four turns at the diff, right?

Btw, junkyards are getting expensive. $200 for everything and we had to argue to get it that low.

As far as the gearing, it sounds right. The 8.8 is pretty stout too - that's a big upgrade.

The 4.0L V6 Explorers came standard with 3.27 gears but there was the option for 3.73s. Mine came with the tow package which included the LSD and 3.73 gears. Ford didn't offer a 4.xx gear for the Explorers.

If I were you I would pull the cover off and check out the condition of the gears and bearings before installing it on the Ranger. While you have the cover off you can check to ratio. What does your friends Ranger have done to it? What size tires is he going to run? Is it an auto or manual trans?

I ran my Explorer with 31s and the 3.73s but I wished that I had 4.10s. When I went to the 33s I changed to 4.56s. I use to have a 91 Ranger 2wd prerunner with a 4 inch lift, 31s and 3.73s and they were perfect for that truck. It had a full fiberglass frontend and rear bed sides so it was lighter than my Explorer. Plus it had full exhaust and a chip so it made more power as well. Man I miss that truck. I sold it to my nephew Eric and he eventually totaled it. Here are some pictures of it after Eric bought it.

4.10 was an option, diff code D2.

This is a 3L V6 auto with 35" tires. A 4.75 would bring him back to stock. I think he's going to run the 4.10s for now and upgrade to 4.88s in the future.

The best diff to steal is Code R8 out of a Ranger. It's a LSD 8.8 with 4.56 gears.
