Default Best way to safely receive payment?

So other than cash, what are the best ways to receive a safe payment? Obviously a personal check can go boing and I don't even think a cashiers check/money order is guaranteed.

In order of safety:

1) Cash/Paypal/Wire
2) Cashier's Check
3) Money Order
4) Personal Check

What's the distinction between a cashier's check vs. money order?

A Cashier's Check is made payable to a specific party and is guaranteed funds from the financial institution. A money order is not made out to anyone specifically and is thus easier to do a stop payment on.

Thanks for the info.

Probably also give a Bill of Sale with signature and enumeration of what is sold for how much to who.

I've heard cashiers checks are a big problem lately. Fakes look good, even the bank cashiers have been fooled. Then a week later you get dinged for a deposit reversal.

Usually the fakes we get look pretty crappy. Fake cashier's checks do come in occasionally though.

ill second this

if you want to be crafty, have the person give you the business card of the officer at the bank the official(cashiers) check was issued off of. Then give said officer a call upon receipt of the check.
