Dude, Brand new ones 2 hp 20 gallons are ~$150-200. Just go to Home Depot.

They're also garbage.

That's the stupidest over generalized comment ever. They have a ton of compressors. I don't think there is any real savings in buying a used one. I bought a dew alt 2 hp 20 gallons for ~$200-300 works great. No problems.

Really? They're typicall all made by the same garbage chinese manufacturer. My painters compressor was expensive, bought from home depot and even being a 200 gallon compressor couldn't keep up with our HVLP guns. It was fucking pathetic, the same brand had smaller sizes too. I don't want to mention the brand until i'm certain what it was.
I didn't mention buying used to save money overall, I mentioned it because the shop sized/quality ones are leaps and bounds better compressors. We made our own compressors for the shop because it was cheaper and now we have ones that actually hold some pressure all day. A tank it a tank but what they bolt to it is wildly different. Go to a estate sale for a shop that's closed down or keep your eyes peeled on CL, lots of shops have gone down and GOOD/GREAT compressors are everywhere, will you pay a little more then a new one from home depot or lowes? Sure but these are also compressors that likely sold for 2-3k vs. 200-300

Great info, but a 20 gallons 2hp compressor from DeWalt, Husky, etc... will last and support painting, air tools, and tires. A 5-8 hp 200-300 gallon unit is nice if you have the space/electrical, but not necessary. Most of us are working out a a garage not a shop. Honestly most of my tools are cordless. I don't like dragging the hose around and it makes things 100 time easier at the track.

It will work everything fine except a paint gun or vaccum pump.

Ya but the problem with those is that theyre all oil-less. Call me an old man but I just dont fucking like the idea of oil-less. I have a campbell hausfeld oil-less and I dont trust it.
HF had an oiled one but Im always skeptical about buying central pneumatic stuff, especially something with moving parts.
But I scored an open box Snap On oiled 20 gallon one today. So Im good
