Okay, went all the way out to Muirietta() to check this one out today. First impression- this thing is clean. The paint has a couple of scratches here and there but hey, it was a family vehicle. It drove very nice and smooth but when you put your foot into it you could definitely feel that power it has (specs from factory: 176 kW , 236 HP @ 5,400 rpm; 244 ft lb , 330 Nm @ 2,400 rpm). The family has owned it since 55,000 miles and since then have replaced the alternator, turbo, and a few other things I forgot. Right now it has 133,000 miles. All maintenance has been done by either the Volvo dealer when it was under warranty or by the family mechanic. The dad doesn't know very much about it. Now since we don't live in a perfect world, I'll list the problems I had with it, ranging from most to least important.

1. Has a problem with surging at idle. Doesn't happen all the time, but happens frequently enough to where it's a pain in the ass. When I drove it the RPMs would bounce inbetween 700-850. I asked him how bad it had gotten before and he said 700-1100 RPMs were the the worst he's seen. He's been driving with it for about a year now. My question is what the heck is causing this? My prediction is that either the MAF sensor or the throttlebody have something off. Best case scenario is they just need to be cleaned. Worst case is they need replacing ().

2. Timing belt and serpentine belt need replacing. The owner has no idea the last time the belts were changed. Fluids looked ok from what I could tell. Dipstick looked clean.

3. Rear top brake light is out. When you brake a light on the dashboard comes on, but I couldn't tell if it was the CEL or not.

I'm having it checked out either tomorrow or Friday by a guy I found in Temecula that specializes in Volvo's. I'm hoping for positive news.

EDIT: In other news, the parents shot me down on the Datsun idea once again
However, the mom really likes the Volvo.

Best $89 I ever spent. Enough stuff wrong with the wagon to total it. The owner couldn't believe that his volvo shop had been lying to him about everything about the car. I don't think the timing belt was even replaced once.

In other news, pretty much I just want something that can beat my friend's 02 maxima in a 1/4. My standards are very low at this point.

Yeah, if that thing was a couple grand cheaper I would be on it like white on rice.

And then I'd probably be in the ICU for wrapping it around a tree a week later, haha.

Hokay, right now in the Volvo sector I'm looking at these 3.

2 2001 Volvo T5 Wagons:
http://inlandempire.craigslist.org/cto/2150276595.html
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv...160024977.html

And a 1995 T5R:
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv...154374730.html

In other news, turns out my insurance will allow me to have up to a 95' Camaro Z28 or up to a 99 Mustang GT (but 99 is really the only year I'm interested in).

For you guys who know Mustangs, what would a general mileage be where it wouldn't be worth it to pursue it? 130,000?

I would buy a 99 GT or a 94-95GT only in that range. The 96-98 SOHC GT's were not particularly quick stock and it's very difficult to make power out of the motor without doing extensive work.

Do it.

I've thought about it, but 215 hp in the 5.0 vs 260 in the 99 GT is quite the jump. Plus it seems that particular 5.0 has quite the mileage on it. Also, the 99 and ups just look good compared to earlier 4th gens.

Thinkin along the lines of:

Getting a 5.0 to 260hp and beyond is easy and cheap. Getting a 99 GT much beyond 260 is expensive.

Hmm, I'll keep an eye out for 5.0's then. I still kinda think that one you posted is asking high for the mileage on it. If I were to get a 5.0, what would you recommend as some first upgrades?
