I still think the future of performance will be aluminum block turbo diesels in sports cars, especially with gasoline the way it is. I know Audi is working on it.

I think Audi was considering a street version of their diesel race engine for the R10 before they opted for the Lamborghini unit. I expect something in the future, especially of some of the bio-diesel production methods turn out to be as efficient as they might be.
