When the
2013 Jetta Hybrid was
unveiled at the
Detroit Auto Show earlier this year,
Volkswagen suggested the car would get 45 miles per gallon on the combined cycle. Well, we're now 10 months closer to launch - still scheduled for some time in late 2012 at a price that starts at
$24,995 plus destination - and that's still the only efficiency number that Volkswagen has been able to hand out. At a media event in Santa Fe yesterday, VW spokespeople did say that they are working with the EPA to get the final city/highway numbers, and that we should see them shortly.
But the fact that we still don't know what the official fuel economy numbers will be doesn't mean we haven't learned a few things. For one, Rainer Michel, Vice President of Product Marketing and Strategy for Volkswagen of America admits that the gas-electric Jetta isn't as efficient as a
Toyota Prius. However, Michel says that was a deliberate choice: "It is by purpose. We want the customer to have a great experience, fun to drive, and that's why we positioned the car this way." This fits in with VW's message that the Jetta Hybrid - the fifth powertrain option, along with various gas and diesel models - is "efficiency without sacrifice" and "the antidote to the common hybrid." Seems like everyone is
picking on the Prius lineup these days.
