ive had several cams in my evo and the bigger the duration mixed with *for us dual cam folk* how advanced or retarded the cams are in relation to eachother and the oem 0 degree mark on the cam gear is what makes us sound like a coughing old man!

when i popped in my hks 272 degree duration with 10.8mm lift on intake and exhaust cams set at 0 degree's on the cam gears the car sound stock as hell. then i played with the variable valve timing on the ecu and advanced it a few degrees and now my car sounds like a mean camed domestic....only with half a motor lol

That's because when you advance the intake cam the IV is staying open longer into the compression stroke.

Scratch that, shouldn't it get more lopey when you retard it?

Advance a cam-- more low and midrange.
Retard a cam -- more top end less low end.
This is the GENERAL rule on this

Back in Ol' Red's early days it would drive a vacuum gauge nutz. It sucks and blows thru the carb. Part of why getting the correct power valve makes such a difference. even now, if I play with timing, I can see the vacuum gauge jump around. It always stays on the vacuum side at idle, but it's never a rock steady reading,
