Default Help with selection of Fuel Pump

Well... for christmas we are getting my dad a fuel pump for the 429 that is sitting on the engine stand and was wondering what fuel pump to get. There are a few on Summit Racing that I was looking at and was wondering which one to get. They all are the same pretty much but freel flow rate and max presure. The final build will be HP and TQ somewhere in the 500's, 600's tops. The summit catalog says 80GPH is enough but when I was looking a an Edlebrock Fuel Pump in one of my comparisions it said it flowed 110GPH and supported up to 600HP. This is too technical for me. Thanks all.

Do you want an electric or manual pump? I would go with one that flows a minimum of 110gph. A carb can't have over 9psi so if the pump you choose is rated above that you will need a pressure regulator. Holley's Blue pump is rated at 110gph and comes with a regulator. I'm running the Holley Black pump on the Chevelle but it doesn't come with a regulator, you have to purchace it seperately. If you want to go with the Black pump, I have an extra regulator here that you can have. You could just take it when you're here Saturday.

At 5lbs of boost making 521hp my Carter Strip pump (130gph) kept up on a 4th gear dyno pull. Claims to put out 8-9 psi at idle, realistically puts out 7.5 which is perfect for most Holleys. Keep that in mind, if you need 7 psi at idle, overshoot. I ran a Carter street pump and it only put out about 5.5psi, claimed to do 7.

Wherever I'm at now hp wise, the pump isn't enough. If you're looking at 500-600hp, get a strip pump if you want to stay mechanical. NA motors need a little less but even still, you'd be taxing a 130gph pump.

I plan to go with an electric Aeromotive 1000 or maybe one from Injectors Plus if they have a comparable one at a lower price.

Thanks guys. We are going to stay mechanical. The motor will probaly live life in stock form for at least a few years or until my dad gets the itch for more power! Not sure if my dad will get that itch quickly or not. Cars have a way of making even the most mature and responsible person act like a kid at any moment.

I will look into both pumps Ron.

The pumps Ron listed are electric, you may have to take advice from a Chevy guy on this one. Sorry to say.

Even though that pump says it flows 120gph I would go with a different pump like this Holley because of the tiny 1/4 inlet and outlet. The Holley uses a 3/8 inlet and outlet and is rated for 130gph.

I'm more of a mixed drink kind of guy too. Beer has always tasted like toilet water to me. Yes Ben, I know what toilet water tastes like.

Btw, I used to be a "Chevy guy" then I saw a bare block 351... it was virtually identical to a bare block 350, but the dist hole was on the wrong side. They're the same. Both make good stuff and both make crap.
