I've been doing a lot of sanding lately. I don't have the money to have the paint/body work done right now so I'm just taking the rusted sections down to bare metal, spraying them with an etching primer and then with gloss white Rustoleum. The rest I'm just roughing up the paint and spraying over it. Here is what I've done so far.

You can follow up with regular primer after the etching primer. I would even use white, this way you wont spend twice as much in sandpaper getting the rustoleom off when it comes time for paint.

Not at all. It's kinda mandatory for the work you're doing. Harbor freight now sells the da sand paper rollsfor about $10. Incase I didnt have any in that box I gave you.
