There could be all kinds of things wrong with a bike that's been laid down hard - bent frame, cracked supports, and lots of things can become misaligned. I wouldn't go for the salvage - there's a reason people dump salvages for cheap. Pretty much all sport bikes in the years you're looking at will be fuel-injected. My first was a '96 gsxr750 so I've got a sentimental spot for the gixxers - great bikes, a little jumpy on the throttle, but they've smoothed it out a lot over the years.
