Default Diesel SUVs

What are my options? The vette will be paid off in September and I will be living in Seattle. I have a truck, but would like to get a upscale diesel SUV. Does GM make a Diesel SUV? I'm leaning towards a VW Toureg TDI. The only American Diesel SUV that I can think of is the old Excursion. How does this happen?

Up until quite recently Americans have viewed diesel as being strictly for industrial applications. The Europeans, however, mostly because of more expensive fuel, have looked towards diesel as an economic option for consumer transportation. This is reflected in the fact the Europeans have diesel cars from rather small (like 1.3L) up through SUVs and the fact they way the crack petroleum itself is even designed to yield more diesel.

Interestingly Americans like hybrids more than diesel as an mpg solution, the Europeans are the opposite. They don't much care for hybrids generally. There are hybrid American SUVs.

In short we haven't looked to diesel as a consumer option for much of anything and to my knowledge there is no American made diesel SUV. There was a Jeep Wrangler (or might have been Liberty) for a while that had a Daimler diesel but I don't know about now.

Choices:

Mercedes ML320 Bluetec
Audi Q7 TDI
BMW X5 Diesel
Porsche Cayenne Diesel

None of the big 3 make a diesel SUV currently as far as I know. I like the Audi

Agree on the Audi.

The Volvo XC90 is very highly rated, and I thought there was a diesel version, but apparently only in Europe.

The Audi is the same car as the Toureg and therefore the Porsche. The Audi and VW had identical specs except for cost. The Toureg is one of the least realiable cars sold in America apparently. That is a shame. I was looking for something that was a better daily driver option, but could still tow. I will not by a hybrid since they are bad for the environment.
