The Difference Between an Avatar and a Profile Pic
Avatars will show in the forums and shoutboxes. Profile pics will show in the "Friends" list. Typically, avatars are not a photo of yourself, but just about anything else. A profile pic is typically a pic of yourself.
Of course you're free to do whatever you want. If you don't want to have a pic of yourself, just use your avatar, a pic of your favorite car, whatever strikes your fancy.
It's just a way to give a little more flexibility in how you are represented on the site in different areas.
