Default Open Source Designs

One of the things I'm into and support is the emerging community of designers who are developing a body of publicly available, free designs, for making an array of commonly needful things for civilization. There are a couple reasons, but the main one is to create the lowest and easiest possible entry point for building largely self-suffecient localized communities. I have some other reasons for supporting this kind of thing, but I'll save that for other sections of the site.

I really wish we could use more software defined radio (SDR). It would allow us to use one radio transceiver but use whatever spec or frequency would work best in the area that your in. But the FCC has put a stop to a lot of open source radios because of the fear of interference

They're afraid of a little more than that . . . .

A branch from here is the combination of OS designs with falling prices of rapid prototypers that can work with metals as well as plastics. Someday we might have home based 3D printers that could print damn near anything, gears for your car, kitchenware . . . firearms.
