They had the "right" to detain based on the information you were leaving a known dealer's house (by the sound of it). Getting a warrant was just to solidify their case and make it harder to have thrown out in court. If they search without a warrant on probable cause, which they can do, it's a little more vulnerable to being contested in court by a good defense attorney. At least this is my understanding.
