The pistons chase the valves as they return to the seat. If the belt or chain breaks, the piston(s) will smack the valve(s) bending them. Common on all motors with adequate lift and decent compression.

This is opposed to a motor that would be able to make a full revolution with the valve at max lift, without the piston hitting the valve.

When I lost the timing belt on the Neon all 16 of my valves were bent. If you want a souvenir I've got plenty.

New valves The top end should be good for another 100K miles now.
