GM did with the DOHC 4 valves per cylinder LT5. It was too expensive. The LS motors are more compact and lighter than the 4.6 and likely the 5.0 mod motor fords. The Gen3/4 SBC's get equivalent or better gas mileage to the 4.6-5.4 liter fords. The Gen3/4 SBC's have always been more torquey than the mod motors. And until the 5.0 comes out there mod motors haven't been competitive to Gen4 SBC's in power either N/A or supercharged. The SBC's are fine with a cam in block and pushrods. Keeps 'em small, light, and powerful. perfect for slipping into little unsuspecting imports. Good luck getting even a SOHC mod motor under a RX-7's hood.
