Yes, it's an abrasive. Yes, it sands down your clear coat. Yes, if you run the buffer over a corner you can quickly sand off all of the clear coat.
I'm not actually getting a buffer - I'm getting a dual action polisher. After looking around the detailing forums they're very safe. It would be difficult to really screw things up too bad (although I might be up to the task).
