If it's not leaking the oil out then it is...
If it's not leaking the oil out then it is burning it. There are two ways it can burn oil, either it's getting passed the rings or it is being sucked into the intake. A leak down test will help...

Get a broom handle if you don't have a stethoscope, cut it down a little and use it to listen at the oil pan.
Numerous things can cause a rod knock but the most common I guess would be a loose rod...
