99' 6L Cummins Shifting Issue

What is like the cause of the following behavior.

When going about 45mph, especially under any slight load like an incline, our 99' Dodge Truck will upshift too early, then it will immediately kick down, back and forth. Not a problem going slower or faster.

Front pump, time for a rebuild

Vettezuki 07-19-2014 03:42 AM

WTH is a front pump?

I know someone who will buy that Cummins as is. Unlike Guy, he'd rather be Cummins than Stroke'n.

Although, I wouldnt sell it if I were you. A Cummins is a better investment than real property.

The front pump is what gives fluid to the torque converter and the rest of the transmission, when it starts to die, line pressure drops and you start the burn the clutches, once the clutch material gets in the fluid it kills the torque converter, the the valve body and blamo, no moe go.

Thanks for the explanation Guy. Another guess was solonoid. It is throwing a code, so I'll check that. It'd be nice if it was something relatively simple like that.

Adam, it's not going to be sold. Probably end up being a family heirloom. Only has like 150k miles, most of which are not especially hard. Should last just about forever with care.

Solenoid=Valve body
Throws a solenoid code when the fluid gets mucked up and the solenoid no longer fires, might get lucky with a fluid change and a solenoid body swap, but I doubt it. That trans is garbage.
