LT1 guru

Hey guys, have a quick question. If you had/have an LT1, who in socal would you take it to for tuning and performance mods? My bro has an 96 impala ss and I think its in need of a good tune because it runs like crap...LOL Thanks ahead of time.

Oh, and did you get your car all sorted out?

Thanks for the info. On the car, yes and no. I got the whole tire situation taken care of but this weekend I either cracked my y-pipe or one of the exhaust gaskets. Its still runs strong, but I notice a difference. I'll try to look at it this friday when I'm off. Hey quick question, do you guys have a hook up for dyno pulls? Don't need a tuner, just curious what my car is putting down in situations like this. I know I've lost some power just don't know how much.

The problem with dyno pulls to check subtle things is that you really need to be on the same dyno under similar atmospheric conditions from your baseline. What you perceive as a difference may only really be 10HP on the top end, and dynos can easily be that far off from one another. Another way to check is if you have a base of timeslips from a given track that is consistent AND you are a consistent diver (i.e., not Sean). If your mph is off by more than 2mph on average, you are definitely down on power.

Old rule of thumb-- error is "+" or "-" 2% on Dynos. So if you have 400hp it could be off by.............................anyone?

If I can find a dyno where I can do pulls frequently and cheap, I would do pulls frequently just to check little things. Reason I ask, this weekend I ran a cobra and an evo and the runs were a lot closer than I expected. Which could mean a couple of things. First that my car is making a lot less power or that both the other cars were BS'ing about their mods.....I know I'm making less power but it would have to be substantial for the runs to have been that close.

Have you been to the strip yet? If so, what do you run?

Last time I went to the strip I ran a 12.6 on regular street tires. Spinning all of first and some second. Was on a cold night. Now I have stickier tires and and putting down a little more hp. I put down 357 hp and 387 tq on a dynapack. Which would probably be around 330 or so on a dynojet. Car weighs about 3200 with me in it. 1st and 2nd gear are strong, but 3rd and 4th is where the car shines.

What MPH? Where did you run 1/4 at night?

I'm 390 to the wheels and should be about 3,400 with me in it (guess). My best is 12.6@112 at Fontana on a typical shit day with DRs. I can't crack a decent 60' to save my life.

What kind of IRS does your car have, is it a SLA, multi-link? I have an stone aged trailing arm setup, though I've got it working pretty well for handling. My car pulls hard through 3rd and somewhat less in 4th.

In palmdale when it used to be around. In fontana, last year I ran....13.1 I think. Same scenario, spinning first and second on a very hot day. Suspension....what ever stock is, I think its multi-link. Just tein springs and camber control arm in the rear. Trap speed, don't remember exactly but I think it was around ~114-117...., don't remember. I do remember I had a very shitty 60ft, but had a high mph. I think my 60ft was around 2.4. My strongest gears are 3rd and 4th. I don't have the timeslip but I'll try to post my dyno sheet. Maybe its the powerband and the gearing, but its' pretty quick in 3rd and 4th.

I was trying to upload my dyno sheet yesterday but wasn't able to get it working. Is there anything special I have to do?

What kind of file is it? It should take it... If you want shoot me an email at SeanPlunk@gmail.com and I'll try it.

its a .jpg. I'll try it again today when I get home. If I can't get it to work, I'll send it over.

Should work fine unless it is truly gigantic (>5MB) and you're trying to attach it to a post directly.

dillusion13 07-01-2009 08:52 AM

Finally got it to work. The file size wasn't that big, but the image dimensions were bigger than allowed.

Pretty damn impressive. How much boost are you running and what kind of turbo?

How much horsepower can the stock bottom end take? I know the 2JZ can handle anything pretty much, but I know a lot less about your engine. Is a turbo upgrade in your future?

dillusion13 07-01-2009 10:51 AM

people have done 700+ on the stock bottom end. I would say ~600 reliable. I'm planning to run ~450 on pump, ~550 on methonal mix. Yeah, the single upgrade should be coming soon. I'm looking to buy a house right now, but as soon as that gets taken care of, I should be going single shortly after that. Maybe early next year, or earlier if something goes before then...:sm_laughing:
