Irwindale Speedway 4.30 anyone?

I am heading out to Irwindale this Thursday night and was wondering if anyone else will be out there from the board?

I've got a major itch to go, but money and time are way tight at the moment. But in case I decide to go at the last minute, what will you be rolling in?

I unfortunately can't make it either. I probably won't make California Speedway this Saturday too. I will try to get the one at the end of the month though. Too much to do and too little money :bang:

Don't knock it til you've tried. Especially if you dirve a manual, all the tough parts (launch and shift) are in the 1/8th. And if you drive a fast car, you're moving by the 1/8th. :nutkick:

What do you mean? Are you talking about Auto Club Dragway in Fontana that is just 5 miles from me?

SoCalC55 04-30-2009 03:30 PM

I would assume he ment 1/8 mile Irwindale track and not the 1/4 mile Fontana(California Speedway) one.

Although both traks are having a "street legal drag day" tonight according to their websites. I would consider going to Fontana if others were going

Im just not a fan of the whole 1/8 mile meaning anyting than how good you are at launching. I could care less if there is a car that can blow away anyone in the 1/8 but then turns in a less than steller 1/4 time... in the real world that car would get killed

I was asking you if you were referring to Fontana as being BFE. I also don't care for an 1/8 mile track but it's better than not being able to run. Besides it's open every Thursday unlike Fontana that is usaully only once every month or two. I'll be trying to get out to one of the two tracks with the Cobra once I get my suspension finished and the Vortech rebuilt. I need to practice my launch on my street tires.

SoCalC55 04-30-2009 05:02 PM

my bad, misinterpreted your question. Well with Thursday night traffic it would take at least an hour and a half to get there, likely closer to 2 hours. Too far to get to with work and class

Anybody who street races from a dig more than an 1/8th mile should be publicly beaten. I'm screaming past 90mph at the 1/8th. You gonna do that coming off an intersection?

In fact an 1/8th mile is more of a drivers race, where actual skill matters, past the 1/8th it's just a cock measuring contest for power/weight/aero.

Anyway, Irwindale is run about 10 times better than Fontana, with far better drag cars on an average Thursday night. It's very well prepped and lower altitude than Fontana. Plus they have a Taco truck which really takes it over the top.

Average day at the Fontana street legals will be 4 runs in 8 hours (plus being there a couple hours earlier. Average TNT Thursday at Irwindale is 10+ runs in 4 hours total. Plus they have king of the hill if you think you're hot shit.

I am going to have to make it our to Irwindale some time. I would love to see how I run there compared to Fontana.

I agree with you Ben, 1/8 is where the skill comes in.

If I had to guess, your Mach will be about three tenths faster than at Fontana. Between the night air, altitude, and prep, it's completely different. It's also a cooler vibe. And being 1/8th keeps things moving a lot faster.

Went tonight it was fun. As usual and I still say irwindale is one of the best prepped track out there. Maybe fontana could learn a thing or two.

Good point there, i rarely go over 70 when im provoked so the quarter wouldnt mean jack :leaving:

still though, if I hear "my car can do X.XX in the 1/8" it dosent mean much compaired to "my car can do XX.XX in the 1/4"

BTW, how did you do Rekko??

Or even better if you can say my car does X.XX in the 1/4. Hopefully I will be able to say that soon.

Hey guys,

I didn't do too bad. I will post up my slips from Irwindale last Thursday later on today. I got three runs in with the first run being my best 8.77 @ 81.80 MPH. The next two runs I lowered the tire pressure both times trying to get a better 60' with no help. 8.83 and 8.88. After those runs I believe that my new shoes like having more air in them with my set up? We'll see.

I never did make it out to Fontana yesterday. Good news is they are running again this coming Saturday the 9th.

Even though Irwindale is only an 1/8th mile, it's nice for practicing your launches and getting everything dialed in before you run in Fontana. Even though you can't really compare times between the two because Irwindale always has a lower DA. None the less it's a good time with cool people. By the way it was packed on Thursday. Hour and twenty minutes between runs.

I think tech opens at 4:30 at Irwindale and they move pretty quick. If you can hit the strip at 5:00 you can usually get several runs in right away before it loads up too much. But definitely as we move into the summer months, it's more crowded.

Don't forget you can add vehicles to your garage. Once you have a vehicle in your garage, you can do all kinds of things with Timeslips.
