Super Cruise Feeler. Chime In!

Hey guys. Im always looking on Google Earth for cool local places to drive and nice canyons to carve. I know there has to be some other nuts like me out there so I got an idea today. A super canyon carving cruise. The route would be San Gabriel Cyn Rd (Hwy39) to Angeles Crest Hwy, here would be a good break point to let the cars cool and stretch. Then ACH all the way down to Wrightwood, here I was thinking we could stop at a cool little biker stop for pizza and a cold one. After this take ACH to 138 to the 15 and head home. It will be a long all day thing since we would cross the San Gabriel Mountain range so an early start would be best. I still have to map out the mileage and this drive wouldnt be untill the snow melts and ACH is re-opened, hopefully by June. If my estimates are correct the from the La Verne area to Wrightwood would be around 65-70mi on this route but if you have Google Earth follow my directions and look at the pictures along the route. There are a lot of beautiful scenes to look at. So, what do you guys think? Just seeing if anyone else would be willing to do this. I'll try to drive the route hard when I can and safely of course, but everyone is welcomed, fast-normal-or slower drivers. We cant drive the whole route balls out without running out of gas or our cars blowing up so Im sure a nice group would be able to stay together. Let me know your opinions.

Wow, that long of a run huh? Looking forward to it, if not, we'll plan it.

Our first event was a moonlight run to Lake Perris, down to Elsinore and back...That was long too . :yikes:

You mean this one? I had the tops off and it was a bit cold too. But fun!

I wouldn't mind a longer cruise. Or a night cruise during the summer.

BRUTAL64 03-19-2010 05:20 PM

The Mulhollan cruise could be done at night. As I think further on this it will probably be really nice at night. The last time I did this was about 1 in the morning. Looking for a race up there.

I am up for a cruise. I am thinking about heading up to San Luis Obisbo. This is an all day cruise. I may stop over.

With enough advance notice, I'd be game. I've done a night-time cruise w/ SVTOA that started in SD and included over two hours of back-country driving that got us to the 8 Freeway out by Ocotillo Wells, after which we drove over an hour to get home.

I like the night run idea!

C5Natie 03-24-2010 08:21 PM

I wouldnt mind a night run at GMR. If youre intrested let me know so we can get together.

ACH run

Sounds good, maybe some time a Napa run would be fun it can be made in 10 hours one direction. Stay a night, taste a bit, buy some, get some and then back home in any direction inland or coastal, it’s all good.

Now that sounds pretty awesome, but would take a little planning.

Done that run. It takes a LOT longer and someone ALWAYS breaks down. But, it is pretty. Went HWY 1 up and 5 down.

ACH run and stuff.

Never say "Break-Down"

Google Driving directions to Napa, CA 432 mi – about 7 hours 4 mins (up to 8 hours 20 mins in traffic) Suggested routes I-5 N 432 mi 7 hours 4 mins
8 hours 20 mins in traffic CA-33 N and I-5 N 486 mi 8 hours 24 mins 10 hours 10 mins in traffic.

Made the 5 south run in 6 1/2 hours--Ready ---in a 68 Ford Station Wagon. It had a built 390 and would run over a 120 mph. Surprised a lot of "group" runners when I'd pull up next to (like a Porsche) a driver doing over 120.:)

Unfortunately it has the aero dynamics of a brick.:sm_up_there:

When you travel in a large group generally takes twice as long as you think.:drink:

C5Natie 03-25-2010 11:07 PM

^^
I was thinking of just that as a trip last fall. That would be cool. We can make it a whole weekend thing, maybe get a group rate at a hotel. Deffinately an idea.

vtec_graves 04-12-2010 04:57 PM

count me in for a GMR run :drool2:

don2000 05-02-2010 11:00 PM

A note on the route suggested, the road up 39 is closed a few miles before you get to ACH, has been for years.
This highway information is the latest reported as of Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 22:55 .

SR 39
[IN THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA]
IS CLOSED FROM 6.5 MI SOUTH OF THE COLDBROOK RANGER STATION TO ISLIP SADDLE
(LOS ANGELES CO) - DUE TO STORM DAMAGE - MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO USE
AN ALTERNATE ROUTE

the only ways onto ACH from this side of the mountain are through La Canada or Wrightwood. Having said that I am always down for any driving in that area, GMR, ACH, hwy39 even sand canyon(farther west) are all great roads that I drive whenever I have some free time. Also ACH is closed due to mud slides, not just snow, might take them a while longer to clean it up
SR 2
[IN THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA]
IS CLOSED FROM 2 MI EAST OF THE EAST JCT OF I 210 TO 14 MI EAST OF
LA CANADA (LOS ANGELES CO) - DUE TO STORM DAMAGE REPAIR - MOTORISTS ARE
ADVISED TO USE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE

IS CLOSED FROM ISLIP SADDLE TO 5 MI WEST OF BIG PINES (LOS ANGELES CO)
- FOR THE WINTER - MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO USE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE

I hate to be a party pooper, these are some of the best roads in SoCal

jedhead 05-03-2010 08:59 PM

bummer.

Bob

C5Natie 05-04-2010 01:24 PM

Well we can always go through the backside to ACH. Im also looking at a route that would cross the mtns and leave us near Lancaster. We'll think of something.

C5Natie 05-04-2010 01:36 PM

I was thinking Hwy 39 to ACH to one of the ski resorts, then head to the 15 and come back. Anyone know if this route is open.

C5Natie 05-05-2010 11:01 AM

Ok guys, here what I came up with, Big Tujunga Rd off of Sunland to Angelest Forest Rd to Angeles Crest up to Newcomb Ranch. Should be a nice drive. Let me know if youre intrested and I'll start to plan it. :drink:
