I read an article the other day that about 70,000 years ago, the Toba super volcano erupted and dimmed the skies around the world for a few years when the planet was already entering an icea age. The resulting loss in plant and anmial productivity (we were hunter gatherers) dropped so significantly that some geneticists believe the entire human population . . . of Earth, may have gone as low as forty (40!) breeding pairs. It took thousands of years for the population to recover.
