We'll be out taping. Be sure to let us know if you'll be out on the calendar (http://motorgen.com/forum/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=1240&day=2009-10-31&c=1) and the day of at the track. We'll put up a tent or two , so come on buy and hang out in between runs.

Yes, they do check for current reg and ins. I actually had to run home once because I forgot to put the current insurance card in the Cobra. Lucky for me I only live 7 miles away.

I once got away with having a slightly older insurance and reg card (couple months), having not put the new ones in the car. You want the nice old asian guy to have even a chance, and frankly, a youngster in an Evo is probably not going to catch much slack from anyone. The woman inspector there will cut your balls off on the spot if you don't have your shi* together.

That's who sent me home. Usually she is really nice but for some reason she just wouldn't let me slide.

She's not the let it slide type I don't think. But honestly that's mostly for the better in place like that. It is a serious liability issue for them.

I've seen her make people demonstrate that the fuel shutoff works though . .

I hate it when they do that to me with the Cobra because then it has to learn to idle again.

I don't think I will be able to make it to the drags. However, I do have a headrest camera mount to take videos from inside the car. Let me know you guys want to use it.

You don't want to be much later than 6:00am or so. Yes, I said 6:00 am. That's to line up outside and sit around for an hour or two, then line up inside to pay, then line up at tech. Bring a blanket or whatever and you can crash.

Damn man, lots of Halloween parties the night before. Guess I'll be at the track parking lot sleeping after the parties

Since I'm only 7 miles away and can't sleep the night before I'm usually there around 5am.

How many runs do you guys usually get in?

How long is your wait time if your there that early?

94cobra69ss396
10-19-2009, 11:54 PM
They open the gates at 6am. You then get in line inside where they line up the first 400 cars. They then start taking those cars in at 7am so you can go get in the tech line. Racing starts at 9am. I like to be in the first run group.

Last time I was there I got 4 runs in and left by a little after noon. There were less than 200 cars.

Meh. If you have a pretty stock looking street car and have you papers in order (registration, insurance) they won't give you any trouble if you little things like aftermarket air filters etc.

I have heard the same thing. Someone from the track called me about 5 months ago and mentioned it. He said that he had seen the site and thanked us for taping runs and promoting the street legals. He said he might come along on the Angeles Crest cruise, but didn't show up. At the time he said there was a lot of pressure to shut down the events and mentioned that 2009 might be the last year.

Husband is racing but I don't want to have 2 cars at the track, and I don't want to get up at the crack of dawn. :)

Where's the pressure coming from? Community groups or more professional drag organizations that want the track more available for competitive events?

I emailed the president of Auto Club Speedway and asked him if the rumor was true that there would be no more Street Legal races after Jan 1. Here is the reply I received:

"We have never had a conversation about this. I continue to believe the rumors in the drag racing community are disruptive. My advice to you - Don’t spread them. Don’t listen to them. If it doesn’t come from us, I wouldn’t trust it."

I'm convinced they don't prep much on the street legals because even MORE cars would break . . .

TnT Thursday at Irwindale is great. They prep well, move fast and the overall level is rather higher. There is a bunch of serious old school muscle there (http://www.motorgen.com//vid/showphoto.php/photo/772).

There's no reason for them to waste all that VHT and scrape the track on a Street Legal day. The radial tires pull up the rubber anyways so it's just a waste of money.

We should get organized for Saturday. I was thinking we could meet at the McDonalds in Savi Ranch for coffee and breakfast at 5:15a.m. and then roll out to the track together.

The address is:
McDonald's
22322 OLD CANAL RD
YORBA LINDA, CA 92686
(714)283-3040

It would have to be quick though, I would want to get back on the road between 5:30 and 5:40. Here is the route. (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=22322+OLD+CANAL+RD+YORBA+LINDA,+CA+92686&daddr=Redwood+Ave+to:9300+Cherry+Ave,+Fontana,+CA+ 92335&geocode=%3BFb0SCAId-1T_-A%3B&hl=en&mra=ls&sll=34.083694,-117.486119&sspn=0.016563,0.042272&ie=UTF8&ll=34.078541,-117.501526&spn=0.033128,0.084543&t=h&z=14) I'm taking us a slightly different route so we're going straight into the track. Whenever I try to make the left turn off of Cherry into the entrance it's a nightmare. This way should be faster.

Once we get in, I know we have at least one popup tent. If anyone else has any, please bring them and we'll all hang out together.

For those being taped, look for the camera setup in the stands. We'll have some static cling stickers to put in your windshield so we know who to tape. What does everyone think?

No. We are literally moving into the building that day.

If you and Adam are able to take video, I'm sure you can suck one of the regulars into doing it some. :nutkick: Alexis will be coming later in the day and she can do some as well. Don't worry about writing the runs down. I'll put them up and you can go through them and figure out who's who.

It may be a problem. Alexis I don't think is coming for sure and probably won't want to sit in the hot stands all day taping. If I'm running though, I don't see any good way to tape - it's too much at the same time. I don't think the other Sean or Jerry are coming, and Adam was planning on running too :censored:

We can also hit up Chi and see if he can come out. My time is ridiculously limited right now, and my primary goal with the video is to process it and get it out. There's no way I can come and shoot and edit this go around. I'll also need to get the video that day as that evening might be the only chance I get a crack at it.

God you're making me hungry! They were so yummy last time. Hehe that was the first time I think we really got to know you, Frankie, and Chuck. Good times. I also think that was just after Halloween too as I clearly remember us have halloween candy, and it raining.

So you mean to tell me you didn't make it to the track this morning?

I just called Sean and they got tech'd in. I guess Adam got hit by flying debris on the fwy on the way to the track on his front bumper. Sean seems to think the bumper will need to be replaced. But it sounds like Adam is still racing. (PS - HAPPY BIRTHDAY ADAM!!!)

Nightmare day. 500 cars and lots of breaks. It took me 1.5 hours just in the tech line. I got here at 6 and got a run in finally after noon. Just went to the stands to try to tape and they were too full to get into. I hate California Speedway!

What a day - I remember why I don't go to the street legals very often. I rolled up with the rest of the group at 6a.m. At that point, the day was looking promising. Only about 200ish cars. Finally they start waiving us into tech. At that point everything starts to go bad. The line I get in for tech is not moving. Leedom's line is moving at about a 2 to 1 rate to ours. It takes over an hour to tech.

Even though we all got there roughly the same time, a couple of us are in group 1, a couple end up in 2, and some end up in 3. It's totally unacceptable in my opinion. They should tech everyone in based on when they got there, not on the luck of the draw of which line you end up in. At this point I'm already very annoyed, but have to get in line for my wristband. It takes roughly another half an hour to get that because they have ONE person working the booth. I can also see that the event is going to sell out and it's going to be a rough day.

The first group starts running and a Mustang promptly oils down the entire track :censored: We were shut down for an hour. Leedom was at the line when this happened. Once we got running again he managed to run a 13.89 second pass (Congrats on your first 13 second slip dude!). Finally my group is up. We have switched the slicks from Leedom's car to mine (BIG thanks to Ron for letting us use the ET streets, and for the great advice) and I go to the staging lanes. It's about noon and after being at the track for 6 hours, I'm finally about to get a run in when the car in front of me oils down the track :censored:

It takes another 30 minutes to clean that up, and I pull up and run a 12.7@114mph. The ET streets hook so hard I actually bogged coming out of the hole. It was strange to not be spinning everywhere. I'm fairly happy to have matched my personal best with my first pass in a year, but that doesn't stop Leedom from giving me crap.

At this point the day is already feeling really long, but I headed up to the stands to think about taping. Unfortunately the stands were full and I realized taping runs today by myself while trying to run was impossible. Sorry everyone - it just wasn't possible to do both.

After eating something and waiting another couple hours, I finally got in a 2nd run at about 3:15ish. I ran a new personal best of 12.5@115mph despite the fact the track had warmed up considerably. I launched at 3500-3700rpm's and I could have launched harder. The ET streets are amazing. I also finally managed to get a sub 2.0 60ft (I cut a 1.9) at California Speedway. I think with one more pass I could have gotten down into the 12.2-12.3 range. I also think on a good day the car would run anywhere from 11.9-12.3 with just a little more practice.

Having said that, I probably won't go back to the track for another year because of how miserable the experience is :(

For being at the track for 10 hours, I mostly just felt annoyed and only had 2 runs to show for it. I wish California Speedway was run like Irwindale.

I had actually run a high 12.78 I believe at 113 before, but yesterday was a lot better. Both runs were actually better than my previous bests. Having the clutch adjusted made a huge difference - no more missed shifts. I just needed to get used to the tires. It's strange to not hop and just hook. Those tires hook HARD. I will be picking up a set for next year I think - incredible difference. I wish I had one or two more runs. I know I could have knocked that 60ft down another .2 and run a 12.2 or so. Getting in two runs a day doesn't allow you to get into much or a rhythm or experiment much :bang:

Regardless of the conditions, you beat you PB on both runs! You should be happy. Get yourself a set of the et streets and buy an extra half shaft just in case. That way if one breaks it wont ruin your entire day!:drink:

Thanks Carlos!

Actually half shafts on Cobras usually don't snap on et streets, they snap on drag radials. I guess the stiff sidewall of drag radials causes the wheel hop that equals death. Having said that, I had already looked up prices before I went yesterday. I can get a stock halfshaft from Tousley Ford for $280 and I may pick one up before I go to the track again.

After yesterday I think should be saving up for a clutch if anything though. I could still smell my clutch in the garage last night. I don't think it likes clutch dumps on et streets very much :judge:

You're going to smell it for about the next month or so. That's how long I could smell it in my Cobra with both my old clutches.

As for your 60ft., you should be in the 1.7 range. I looked at a couple of my old slips from the Cobra where my mph was in the 113-114 range and one had a 1.773 and the other was a 1.711. With the 1.773 the car ran an 11.932 at 114.50 and on the 1.711 it ran 12.016 at 113.08.

First of all - THANKS AGAIN RON!

I definitely think with one more run I could have cut my 60ft down another tenth or two. I finally figured out how to do a good burnout (again thanks to you) and the car was hooking hard. I think I could have launched at over 4k rpm's and still hooked. I was also encouraged to see the 115mph trap speed. I was afraid maybe the car was down on power, but that's about where it should be. I'd love to get an 11 second slip :)

I have no doubt that you can run an 11 with some more practice with your launch. You just need to get that 60ft down to the 1.7 range. I think most of the issue is you being nervous about breaking a halfshaft. Once you get past that you'll see an 11. I don't don't worry about breakage because if I break something I just fix it.

Congrats on you times Adam & Sean!

We should find a good 1/4 mile track and make a Motorgen weekend drive to it!

I cant help but feel like I never want to subject my car to the shittiness that the Fontana 1/4 mile track is... ever... ever

Fontana's track is not a bad track. They actually did a good job of prepping the track yesterday. I was watching them prep it first thing in the morning and they sprayed the whole track from start to finish with VHT. Even after the first car oiled down the right lane they took the time to spray the entire lane from start to finish with VHT again.

It also looked like they scraped the track recently because there was a nice flat layer of rubber on the starting lines.

Well then... Anyone have any hookups on some private night runs?

On a PSCA day, or private day, CSW is not bad. I wouldn't say it's great because even on a good day, it can be
- hot
- a little sandy
- altitude (atmospheric conditions)
- runs ever so slightly uphill

Compare to ringer tracks like English Town where C6Zs run low 11s on street tires with fairly average drivers.

But yes, a lot of the street legal crappiness is administrative and management related. This is where Irwindale is just heads and shoulders above.

BTW, Sean has tried to contact and discuss arranging a private day with the track. Let's just say they aren't exactly the most communicative group. :bang:

Has anyone ever gone to other tracks either in the SD area or up north (ventura, Santa Barbra, etc)?

I'd really be interested in heading to a "good" track. Could be fun to have a mini caravan drive on the way too

The National director of NASA proracing also briefed that the Cal-Speedway guys are difficult to work with. They have come down hard on racers before for bedding their pads in the loop around the parking areas.

The only other 1/4 mile track in Southern CA that I am aware of is in Bakersfield.

I must agree with Sean in the fact that getting 2 runs in is pretty $shitty. There is no need to allow 500 racers in but to get more money in their pockets even if it is at the racer expense (not getting more runs in and being happy).

HUGE THANKS TO RON FOR THE TIRES!! It is amazing the jarring force at the line when the car hooks at launch. I best my previous 60' by .172, ET by .271 and .82 MPH. I know with a few more runs I could have gotten a sub 2 sec 60' and at least a 13.65 time. Ron seams to have more faith in my driving ability then me and thinks I can manage a 13.5 easily. Once I get my gears and new tired of my own I think I might be able to get close to the 13.1.

I thought that they did do a great job of taking care of the spills. They did all the clean up each time in less than 45min. We get mad at the track for taking so long but if drivers were not stupid then it would not be as bad. people break something and decided to coast down most of the track before stoping, screwing eveyone else more so than the track people.

Correction, I gave them a call one day to find out the cost of a private track day and the track coordinator had a call back to me within a day. I just chose not to call back b/c it was too costly at the time.

Depends on who you guys are talking to...maybe you need some new names/numbers.

I actually did try to talk to Beth at one point, but it was damn near impossible. It took the OCHP guys 3 months and a ton of work to reschedule a private track day after it got rained out :suicide:

We've actually talked about setting this kind of event up. Go here (http://motorgen.com/forum/showthread.php?t=977). We need a little more coordination power and working capital, both of which I'm hell bent on improving next year.
