Hey guys,
When it rains it pours. My girls 2001 Audi A4 1.8T FWD ABS and CEL lights are on. I'm not so worried about the ABS but the CEL I need to get fixed. Now I can fix just about anything on my Mustang but when it come the imports I :surrender::bang:. Any of you guys know how to work on Audis or have a mechanic that they trust that can? I ran the OBDII scan and it says P0012 and P0170. I can use all the help I can get guys thanks.

p0012, cam position actuator a - bank 1 timing over - retard.

Its located right at the front of the motor at the end of the valve cover. The connector is going into the side of it. Its easy to take off, remove the upper part of the timing cover (snaps on) and you should see two 10mm bolts holding it on. Remove it and clean it, then re-set the code, the sensors hardly fail.
If the code returns i would have someone diagnose the problem, it could be a sticking hydraulic cam tensioner.

P0170 - Fuel Trim; Bank 1: Malfunction - System Too Lean

boy when it rains it pour engine running lean. I had that same code pop up 2 weeks ago and bought a new front 02 censor my mechanics at a performance shop says you only need to replace the front sensor because that is the one that actually adjusts the fuel trim. In my case it turned out that I had a hole in one of my vacuum lines and that was what was causing my problem of running lean. so my advise check the lines of the vacuum system and then if you do order a sensor only order the bosch for the front only, save you a bit of money.

I'm going to clean the p0012 tomorrow. Whats the best way to check for leaks? I have a good feeling thats the problem. My girl just told me the idle has been surging. I also might change the 02 anyways. The car has 115,000 miles on it.

I'm honestly not sure how to check for leaks, sorry about that

I use WD40 or carb cleaner. When the spray hits the leak the engine idle goes up.

Get your hands on one of those halloween smoke detectors and let the smoke get sucked in through the filter. Or like he said, carb cleaner will raise idle when it comes in contact.
