So I checked out that LT1 Camaro today. I remeber 300hp feeling a lot faster, but then I guess my standards have changed. It did break the 285 tires loose mid first gear, and I got on it from a roll.

Anyways, the sump of the oil pan had a usual amount of sludge for a 90s GM vehicle, but the oil sludge was really caked on the front of the oil pan (near the crank pulley). Is that usual for these engines?

Also, it smelled rich at start up and there was some slight valve train noise. The valvetrain noise I would consider very typical if I were listening to a 1st gen SBC, but I guess I expected more from a roller LT1.

I think sludge has more to do with regular service intervals. In other words, this engine may not have had it's oil changed so frequently. :huh:

Valve train noise? My Gen III sounds like an office of typewriters. Some of that is because the heads have been milled, slightly altering the geometry I guess. I wouldn't be too worried about that unless you hear something that is really sticking out in the pattern.

You might want to try a Sea Foam treatment on it if you get it. The stuff is gnarly. I've done it on a couple cars. It can really break up carbon deposits in the combustion chambers. Carbon deposits alter the heat dynamics of an engine. You should have seen the clouds of smoke that came out of my brother's Tacoma. He said he could feel the difference afterword. I did it on my Vette just for giggles. I had nothing, which makes sense because when I had the engine apart, it was pretty clean, and I drive it fairly hard which keeps them clean and happy. :judge:

BTW, the LT engines are kind of bastards. There are TONS of cheap good stuff for the Gen I SBC and constantly more for the LS series. There isn't nearly as many options for the LT series. GM Performance Parts has some good packages though, like hot cams and what not.

I would think the type writer sound on the LS engine would be the fuel injectors. Which surprisingly I couldn't hear on the LT engine. What I was hearing was definitely valvetrain noise.

As far as the power, 300hp is more than enough for my brother. I was only concerned with the engine having low compression as a result of being abused.

I will definitely check out the red one, thank you. As for the blown one, no way. I'm not going to be responsible for giving a blown Mustang to a 16 year old. But I like the idea of the red one having low compression, after years of learning and saving he could buy a blower and by then he would deserve it.

BTW, I think I've been in the black one before. It was pretty damn fast.

03SonicSvt (expert on everything Ford) says a 94-95 would be better because the 5.0 is a workhorse and cheaper to mod. I seem to remember him saying buy a gt money better well spent. More to mod and damn near the same motors. And cheaper insurance I would think.

Atleast you wouldn't have to worry about speeding tickets in stock form :). But once built should be a blast.
