haha gotcha. No really. My fiancee's car has been giving her troubles and troubles all revolving around the same thing that we've attempted to have repaired multiple times... the exhaust mani.
end story in a nutshell:
need to replace the exhaust mani and have it installed.
car specs is AT 2000 V6.
asking for help to find the part for cheap (new is 330) and help with the labor so we dont have to spend 700 to get this fixed..
please lmk asap...
thanks in advance...

I don't want to volunteer anybody, but Ron (a.k.a., 94cobra69ss396) may be able to hoook you with headers at a decent price threw his pals at GTR. He was at the meet in his highly stickered Cobra. Perhaps for a donation to his Chevelle fund he could help you wrench them on. Don't forget new gaskets at both the block and cats/y-pipe if you have them.

$700 for an exhaust manifold? Hahahahahahahahahahaha! Buy some flippin shorty headers, get on your back and make it happen.
Or go to pick your part and walk out with a pair of manifolds for $20.
Just make sure to clean the mating surfaces with a scotch brite pad and some brake cleaner before install.

Is there just a crack in one or both of the cast iron manifolds? Where/why is it leaking?

Looks like 99-04 3.8L V6 are the same. Here's a new one on E-bay for the RH side, which one is leaking?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2000-00-FORD-MUSTANG-V6-3-8-3-8L-RIGHT-EXHAUST-MANIFOLD_W0QQitemZ220479366444QQcmdZViewItemQQptZM otors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item3355982 52c&_trksid=p4506.m20.l1116
I would find the crack, pull one off at a junkyard, spray the pulloff with some brake cleaner and as it dries look for cracks. Practice on your cracked manifold, the brake clean will outline the cracks for 2 or 3 seconds while it dries.
If you spray your pulloff manifold and it looks solid, buy it, install it with new gaskets. Obviously you can buy those gaskets anywhere, or pay double for them at Ford.

Tyler,
At rockauto.com you can get a manifold with gaskets for 87.89 for the right and 89.79 for the left. I also have a 5% coupon code for them so you can get it for even less. The code is: 21645911808231.
I might try that route. Let me know.

Sean, ur the man. We'll probably go that route... We'll order that asap I think... Rockauto.com has gaskets as well I'm assuming? How difficult will that part be to replace? Access wise... I have all the tools I believe but how hard will it be to reach??

Shouldn't be hard, don't cry about it. Just soak the bolts, pipe flange bolts especially with penetrating oil the night before.

Lol... Thanks enkei. Ur neverending encouragement is helpful :):) as long as I can reach it from top / bottom I should be fine. After all, we did my 02, dp, and exhaust in my garage... Effing heatshield ftl. Thanks for all ur help guys, we'll probably be making an order soon for the rh exhaust mani this week

I haven't worked on a V6 before so I don't know how much room there is to remove the manifold. I know that when I remove my engine in the Cobra I just leave the shorty headers on the heads because the headers are really hard to get in and out off the head. It's easier just to remove the head and header as one piece.
Tyler, we didn't meet but I was the tall guy with the tall blonde wife and the two little girls. If you want some help with it let me know. My only requirement would be that you come out to my house to do it. I live out in Fontana but I have any tool that we would possibly need here.

I picked up Rx-Snake from Ben's house with my trailer and towed it to my house. I'm the one that made and installed the roll bar.

I originally just used my totally awesome AAA to bring it home, one of the best values going. If you don't have the 100 mile package, get it. Anything that requires DMV, go to AAA, you'll live a longer and more stress free life. For later work, Ron picked it up with his trailer.

last time this happened it wasn't driveable and broke down on us in yorba... we can certainly try to move it around but i feel that it would likely be unsafe to make the trip from lake forest to fontana.

If you want me to help just let me know when you have the manifold and we can arrange a day to do the install. I'll come out with my trailer and we can tow the car back to my house and do it here.

Why not try to drive it around your immediate area a little bit and see how it does?

Thanks adam  hopefully finding a trailer won't be too difficult... my goal is to try and keep things as convenient as possible.
Sean, already had to drive it back to lake forest from past the 15fwy (we were on our way to elsinor when the crack blew)... not good. We're gonna let it sit.

i wish i could drive my car but because i'm loosing back pressure i'm not able to accelerate very well, and when it gets worse from driving it i pretty much can't go very far.

Back pressure does not make an engine run better. There is something else going on here. :drink:

If you can find the crack you might want to try and put some JB weld on it till you get it fixed. Might allow you to drive it and have it run a bit better till you get it fixed for good.

Over scavenging can effect power ( lowers it), back pressure does not help power, it only hurts it.
Scavenging, when done correctly, will assist the filling of the cylinder not slow it or even push mixture back into the intake like back pressure will.
Over scavenging will pull the fuel air mixture into the cylinder and right out the exhaust causing less power. It's all a balancing act.:drink:

So I could be correct in stating that running open header on a car not tuned to take advantage of that can cause a loss in hp correct? I drove kera's car before and after this happened, and rode in it after the first time.. No engine damage that is noticeable, but clearly a loss of torque and slow accel :)

Perhaps. But you're talking just a leak right? That's not going to be much of a drop in pressure. Does that engine have an EGR? Is that leaking or otherwise somehow damaged? If so, that can definitely screw you up.

Exhaust Gas Recirculation. There is usually a tube off the exhaust manifold that it is bolted to or it is bolted to the exhaust cross over passage on the intake manifold.

Gotcha. I think it does have an EGR. Took a look at it myself today, I don't have the expertise yet to pull it apart myself, the PS is not easily reachable...
How much would u be expecting to charge us for your help?? (I expect to be helping as much as I'm good for...)
Looks like we need to find a tow up to fontana as soon as we get the part in... Bleh

Mechanic. Noun.
Someone who takes apart your car, finds things that don't really need to be fixed and fixes them. Mechanics typically charge way to much for their parts and labor.
ok anyway... our mechanic is awesome. he'll rip stuff apart and if it doesn't need to be fixed then thats fine... he didn't even charge kera to look at it and find out whats wrong etc... #1 trustworthy mechanic IMO. Just can't afford it right now.

Shouldn't there be a cell triggered by the EGR probe sensor or any of the O2 sensors for such a leak? If it's robbing that much power to the point where you can drive around with a moderate foot I think the EGT's would be abnormal to where either cells should be triggered. Plug in a OBDII unit if ya got one:)

Hate to beat a dead horse here for you guys that were in on the back pressure chat but if the engine is still low on power after the exhaust manifold is replaced I would check the back pressure in the exhaust. If the cat is plugged it would cause the low power and may have caused the exhaust leak from excessive heat and pressure. Ron I will drop off the tester so you will have it to use for Ben as well.
