A man in Florida, in his 80s, calls his son in New York one November day.
The father says to the son, “I hate to tell you, but we’ve got some troubles here in the house. Your mother and I can’t stand each other anymore, and we’re getting a divorce. I’ve had it! I want to live out the rest of my years in peace. I’m telling you now, so you and your sister shouldn’t go into shock later when I move out.”
He hangs up, and the son immediately calls his sister in the Hamptons and tells her the news.
The sister says, “I’ll handle this.”
She calls Florida and says to her father, “Don’t do ANYTHING till we get there! We’ll be there Wednesday night.”
The father agrees, “All right.”
The old man hangs up the phone and hollers to his wife, “Okay it worked, they’re coming for Thanksgiving......Now, what are we going to tell them for Christmas?”

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE

"In 1637 near present day Groton, Connecticut, over 700 men, women and children of the Pequot Tribe had gathered for their annual Green Corn Festival which is our Thanksgiving celebration. In the predawn hours the sleeping Indians were surrounded by English and Dutch mercenaries who ordered them to come outside. Those who came out were shot or clubbed to death while the terrified women and children who huddled inside the longhouse were burned alive. The next day the governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony declared "A Day Of Thanksgiving" because 700 unarmed men, women and children had been murdered.

Cheered by their "victory", the brave colonists and their Indian allies attacked village after village. Women and children over 14 were sold into slavery while the rest were murdered. Boats loaded with a many as 500 slaves regularly left the ports of New England. Bounties were paid for Indian scalps to encourage as many deaths as possible.

Following an especially successful raid against the Pequot in what is now Stamford, Connecticut, the churches announced a second day of "thanksgiving" to celebrate victory over the heathen savages. During the feasting, the hacked off heads of Natives were kicked through the streets like soccer balls. Even the friendly Wampanoag did not escape the madness. Their chief was beheaded, and his head impaled on a pole in Plymouth, Massachusetts -- where it remained on display for 24 years.

The killings became more and more frenzied, with days of thanksgiving feasts being held after each successful massacre. George Washington finally suggested that only one day of Thanksgiving per year be set aside instead of celebrating each and every massacre. Later Abraham Lincoln decreed Thanksgiving Day to be a legal national holiday during the Civil War -- on the same day he ordered troops to march against the starving Sioux in Minnesota."

Re: Jews in Europe

Attempted genocide, nearly successful.

Re: Native Americans

That's not what happened to the natives of North America. Though they certainly got a very royal screwing and there certainly were some openly calling for their actual genocide. Cultural genocide? That's a much stronger argument. Not spending any more time on it than that.

Whether you choose to acknowledge it or not, it's not a day to be celebrated. At least not for the reason that was shoved down our throats in grade school.

No arguments from me about the totally royal screwing the natives got. But the general principle of being thankful, etc., is not a bad one.

PS A lot of what is taught all the way through HS is, let's say, "incomplete."

I went to christian schools up till high school, so "incomplete" is a HUGE understatement. Had a teacher tell us the fossils of dynosaurs were placed on earth to test our faith. :sm_laughing:

Ha! That's fantastic. You're just done at the point. The impenetrable wall of faith. Sometimes powerful in a good way, like enduring hardships, but often so dangerous.
