Here's (http://www.motorgen.com//vid/showphoto.php/photo/671) the video of the run.
[ORIGINAL POST]
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. We'll be meeting up at the Sonic Burger in Fullerton on October 11 and heading out at 9:30pm for a moonlight run. The moon will be close to full and, gods willing, a clear sky should make for some awesome late night scenery.
Be sure to let us know on the Calendar if you think you'll be coming. Click HERE (http://motorgen.com/forum/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=1169&day=2008-10-11&c=1) to see the Event on the Calendar.

Well, that's gonna depend an aweful lot on the driver. I figure we leave Mickey Ds at 9:30 and end up on the other end (C), 140~ miles at 12:00 - 12:30, including pickup at (B) and mixed driving modes. Perfect time for a Deep Fried Sampler or Cheeseburger.

Okay, I'm getting feedback from almost everyone that this trip might be a little too long. What do you guys think, should we look into a shorter route? The objection I'm getting from most people is that the entire trip will cost them over $100 in gas alone and people seem tapped out. BGN8711 is quite vocal about this, and I understand. So, what do you guys think?

I'm open for suggestions, but seriously, there just aren't many other decent routes that close to the OC; especially that meet my two basic criteria: 1) somewhat away from city lights 2) somewhat interesting open terrain. Let me think about it.

I agree, it's not that easy. Aaron (03SonicSVT) was suggesting Ortega highway, but then told me how he thought more people die on Ortega than almost any other road in the US :sm_up_there: Also, how long is too long is one question. I'm thinking maybe somewhere in the 100mile roundtrip range might be good.

This first cruise we did up to Angeles Crest and back was a solid 160 miles, and the people who came seemed to enjoy it quite a bit. I'm all for making things as accessible as possible, but 100 miles round trip from the OC cuts yours options WAY down. I'll take a look at some lesser known roads in Corona/Riverside and see if I can't string something together. I wouldn't want to do Ortega becuase really requires your complete attention, whereas I was thinking this could be a bit more for enjoying nighttime scenery.

There is no Denny,s at 15fwy and hwy 76. Just a gas station and a Taco stand I think. Unless it is new. We could hit the Pala Casino, maybe they have a midnite buffet?:pot_stir: Closest food would be back at Temecula or heading into Oceanside on hwy 76.
Ortega hwy is not a option .
Caltrans has begun construction on a 3 mile section of Ortega Highway. Construction will continue until 2010. For more details tune your radio to AM 620 (Corona) and AM 1620 in San Juan Capistrano to hear the Caltrans announcement. The highway is OPEN during the day, and will close nightly from 8:30pm to 4:30am.
Expect delays throughout the day as east and westbound traffic will be sharing a lane. Check out the Commuter pages for other related news, live traffic cameras on the 91 freeway.

[EDIT]
Okay, you made me go look it up, it's at:
28915 RANCHO CALIFORNIA RD.
TEMECULA,CA 92591 US
Which is actually before the 79 heading South, that is we'd pass it on our way to branching off on the 79. This means it's probably a good B and C location, where we could meet with the Southern guys before heading out on the actual cool part and end up at afterwards. What say yuse guys?

Well, there are other options in the neighborhood.
Sonic Burger - Right down the street
In-N-Out - Right around the corner
Nicks Burgers - about Orangethorpe and Brookhurst
I've seen or been to meets at all these places. Again, if people patronize the business the business is happy to have you there. If you just collect, loiter and make a bunch of noise on their private property, they're not too excited about it. Go figure. :smack:

What about taking the 91 to the 241 to Santiago Canyon and playing around in Silverado/ Trabuco canyon area? Then going back up the 5. That would be about 30 miles one way, less than half the distance.
There's a biker bar in the canyon area also, Cook's Corner or something like that.

This is the message I've put on all the other boards, it has the details for reference
Hey guys,
Dave(fast01z28) had been running this meet previously, but he's been really busy lately so I've volunteered to take it over. We had been meeting at the McDonald's off of the 91 Freeway and Lemon in Fullerton. This month however, the cops rolled in because Lowe's had called security on us. Because of this, we're planning on meeting at Sonic Burger in Fullerton this month before deciding on a permanent relocation for November. If anyone has any input on a good replacement location, please shoot me an email at SeanPlunk@gmail.com or post it up over in the California section at Motorgen.com.
As I mentioned we are planning on meeting at the Sonic Burger in Fullerton located at this address:
1632 N. Lemon Street
Anaheim, CA 92801
(714) 992-4500
We are planning on meeting there at 7:30 p.m. After we hang out there for a couple hours anyone who wants to join us for a cruise is welcome to roll out with us at 9:30. It is almost a full moon on the 11th and hopefully should be a nice cool night - perfect for a cruise. The route we're planning on taking is about 75 miles and should take about 2 hours to drive. After we're finished cruising we're planning on stopping at Denny's or some other fine dining establishment for a late night snack/dessert/coffee, etc.

Jeeze I hope he's not in accounting. The total round trip is about 130 miles from the OC on mostly Fwy/Hwy. For me, I'll get over 20mpg in this case. Let's say 20. That's 6.5 gallons. I think most people should figure $20-$40 in gas. Now if you go nuts at Dennys, that could skyrocket to $50. :smack:

My car gets like, 10mpg and I'm going with my girlfriend !! My daughter and her boyfriend are going in his Stang. I hope somebody still wants to go !!! I have been excited about this for weeks. The route shown is 95 miles..Thats only 9.5 gallons at 3.50 a gallon for 35 bucks. Thats little more than a lap dance and and lasts a lot longer !!
Is the San Diego group still meeting us ??

I don't know about the San Diego group. We could easily meet at the large complex on Cajalco just off the 15 if we need a rendezvous point. There will be plenty of people coming I think, including a number of them there turbo I4s as well as thundering V8s.

Turnout should be a good variety with LOTS of cool cars. Also, oil is down to $80 a barrel today - gas will be down to below $3 before you know it :D

Unfortunately my Dad's Mach will not be ready for the run, we ran into some clutch pedal problems and found the problem but we will not be able to get it up and running before saturday.
Sean, There you go again... gas will never be below $3/gal again. If the barrel drops to $25 the gas company would say some stupid crap like due to the poor economy in the us and the fact that people are driving less, the cost for us to refine it is high now. Besides, the Oil execs 20 vacation homes each are not going to pay for themselves.

From Rancho either get to the 15, 71, or 57 South. You'll want to take the 91west and exit Lemon. Take a right at lemon. You'll pass through the first intersection (mcdonalds - lowes - 24 hour fitness) and your next intersection will orangethorpe. Sonic Burger will be on your right just prior to orangethorpe. I'll come say hello prior to ya'll taking off on your cruise.

Well I just walked in the door from the meet and cruise and I have to say I had a blast :) I want to thank everyone for coming out. The turnout was great - I think we had at least 75 cars. It was also cool to see all the different makes, models etc. Everyone is welcome back next month (November 8th). For those of you that went on the cruise, thanks for making a long trip. I know we had some detours, but overall it was great. I think we had at least 20 cars go on the cruise - way more than I was expecting. Sixteen of us made it to Denny's. I think we all deserve some kind of medal for finishing. For posterity, here is a list of the people that made it:
Ryan 04 VW Golf
Lee 99 Pontiac Firebird
Paul 73 Red Camaro
Alex 04 Ford Mustang
Sean 04 Ford Mustang Cobra
Jake 04 Pontiac GTO
Ben 82 Corvette
Glenn 64 Corvette
Adam 03 Mach 1
Matt 95 Firebird Formula Black
Chris 02 35th Anniv. Camaro(Red)
George 02 35th Anniv. Camaro Pewter
Johnny 01 Camaro SS Black
Alex 97 Camaro Z28 LT1
Marcos 99 Viper GTS
Jerry 03 Chevy Impala Turbo
We all filled out a napkin when we got to Denny's, I'll take a picture and post it up when I get up in the morning. As I mentioned, the next meet is November 8th and I think I'm either leaving it at Sonic's or moving it to the In-N-Out in Fullerton. I will post threads up to let everyone know in a week or so. Thanks again everyone for coming!! I had a blast and I'm really looking forward to next month. Look for a new thread soon :)

also nice meet guys wish i could have gone on the full cruise with you guys :suicide: instead i ended up taking my friend home, and then join a few female friends at a gay club which i gotta say is quite an experience.....im trying to sort all of my thoughts together on that place......but the one for sure upside is that the bartender knew how to mix a mean drink :-).

We went on half the cruise up to Perris and it was fun as hell. We had fun f'ing with people with the air horn on my friends diesel truck. A good variety of cars and people but everyone seemed to have fun bul shitting together. I did think it was funny that Sean who runs the site got lost 3 times:bang:and Ben's car wouldn't start:laugh:...so cheers to the motorgen guys haha. In all seriousness though it was a kick ass cruise next time I'm bringing my car taillight working or not and another cruise is definitely in order for the near future. PS keep it at sonics, in n out down the street is a bust and was a street racing meet up for a long time.

I actually didn't see the girl in question so I don't know what you guys are really talking about. However, it's not terribly uncommon for quite good looking women to be single. They can be intimidating to guys, or guys just assume they're taken and (despite talking a lot) don't approach them. There was actually a study done about it. . . seriously.

Sweet, thanks again for coming out. It was hard to get the import guys to come out at first, but it was really cool to have you guys there and have such a nice mix of cars. The next meet is November 8th, tell your buddies to come (and to register here, more users is more fun). I invited roughly 18-20ish boards to this last meet, but I already have a list of 29 for the next one. The turnout should be even better. I'm already hyped

Here's the deal:
First the vibration is possibly from the engine not the drive line. I chained the engine down and got rid of most the vibration. This is telling me it's an alingment or balance problem.
During the run the damn thing would start to miss at 4200 and feel like it hit a rev limiter at 4500. Of course I don't have one. After I followed Ben back from Dennys as soon as I hit the 55 FWY it started to miss lower in the power band.
I parked it and haven't look at it yet. Damn Chevies.:bang::bang::barf:
I can get into the T-bird and it runs great. Good FORDS!!!!:sm_laughing:

Forgive me for asking if this is a stupid question, but I'm assuming that since you had your 400 balanced, you're using an internally balanced damper. Would you be able to use an externally balanced damper, and... balance it to fix the vibration? Or even grind on the back of your flywheel and balance it that way?

Over Balance-- as your revs increase the pistion weight goes up ( mass and movement ) more weight = over balance. Remember this engine is built to go to 7,200 rpm. Well, at least that was the thought.:bang:
Remember, you can not balance an engine for all rpms.
Next engine--next year--will either be a 377 - 396 - 400 - 427 sbc or a 496 BB. I have the blocks for any of these. I'm actually leaning toward the 377. Super Charging is a possiblty also. AFR heads will be part of the plan also.
Gas used is still in question. I will dip it later.:D

Stick to pump gas. Having to run on race fuel is a pain especially when you only get single digit mpg. I have to run a minimum 100 octane in the Chevelle so long cruises like we did last week are out of the question.

This current engine is a MULE. I'm testing a few new combos at once. It is an externally balance 400. You gave me something new to think about -I know stand back-when this current engine was balanced it was balance with another flywheel. I but a new Mcloud flywheel in at the last minute that was suppost to be the same balance as factory 400. :sm_up_there:

This wouldn't prevent the engine from revving, especially at such a low cutoff would it? Wouldn't the out of balance engine just vibrate, maybe self destruct in extreme cases, but it'd still rev up through it's range as long as it was breathing and getting fuel right? I could understand some loss of rev potential from balance, but 7,200 down to the 4,000s seems extreme . . . Am I missing something.

My original plan for the current 454 in the Chevelle was going to be 11:1 as well but then I found cracks in the heads (128cc) and bought the Edelbrock Performer RPMs which have a smaller combustion chamber (118cc). The compression is just above 12:1. My next engine build either another 454 or a 496 is going to have 9:1 and a Procharger. That way I can run 91 and a conservitive tune and then when I take it to the track run race gas and more timing. That's the way my Cobra is.

You're correct. It just gives it a mean vibration. I had this happen on a 88 Mustang I had. The balancer spun which gave it a horrible vibration but the engine would still rev to 6000.

The rivbration has been an on going thing. This damn miss -more like misses- showed up about a week before the run. It was just a "little" miss at first. So I threw in a set of plugs the day of the run. It got worst. Then as the temp cooled down outside the "miss" was really bad. Now it's like a hitting a rev limiter.
So, fuel is the first thought, and the electrical is second. Damn Chevies.:crutches:

496 is the way to go. That was the spec used in Cam Am racing way back when. That small change in ci REALLY wakes the BB 454 up. I've been working on roller cam specs for a couple of guys. The figures I've been getting are just out standing. Think 600 ftlbs at 2000 rpms.

Yep, that is within the specs I've been working with. How it's manners in a 454?:
What's the intake center line on the Comp cam? I'm thinking 108* but have seen some Comps with 106*.

It's 106 and I love the cam. It has a ton of low end torque and pulled good to 6500. The valve springs are getting worn so I'm loosing some of the top end.

You probably already know this but if you're considering boost, keep it between 110 and 114. 106 for a NA motor would be gnarly though. :D
Don't go with a 377. I can see how it's appealing as a high reving odd ball motor but a C2 like yours needs to shake the earth when it fires. If you can do a 496... do it. :lhdevil:

106 is the center line, 110 is the separation. It's simular to what I'm running in the Cobra which is Cranes version of the E303. It also has a 106/110 but with only 220 @.050 and a .480 lift. With the Cobra the bottom end feels like a N/A car but when you get to 3000 and start making boost it just pulls hard.
To make it survive on 91 octane I have the initial timing set to 6 (not sure what total is because the tuner set it) and when I run race fuel I bump it to 14 and have another tune for it.
I figure that I will have the same results in the Chevelle. I should have around the same bottom end that I do now which is more then enough since I can break the tires loose at 60 on the freeway in third gear. It'll just be stronger from 3000 up with the blower.

It's part # 11-692-8. It's the smallest of the solid rollers in the Magnum series. The reason I chose it was because it has a cast iron distributor gear so I didn't have to change the gear on my distributor.
The lifters are Chet Herberts, I've had them for about 7 years and haven't had any issues. I originally had a herbert cam but some of the lobes went flat which is when I installed the Comp.

No, I've checked that. This vibration has been there since I put the 'new' engine in last year. I thought it was a drive line aligment problem. But, now I'm not so sure. Still not going to sweat it, this being a MULE motor and all.
I'm playing with the idea of pulling the motor and getting it rebalanced.
But, I do have a 454 block sitting on the shop floor next to a 76 L82 block and an early 70s 4 bolt 400 block.:pot_stir:

Well, the stories I've heard from the, uh, elders, is that back in the day (50s, 60s, and to a lesser extent 70s), Southern CA was a street racing haven. However, you didn't have to go far to get to long uninterrupted empty stretches of road where you weren't a so much threat to the public. No days, you've got some real dumb as*es racing down busy public streets, neighborhoods, etc. It's gotten bad enough that if you cause a fatal accident while racing, you can be charged wit murder.
