Help me fix my car

This has been driving me absolutely nuts. My turn single no longer shuts off after I complete the turn. It doesn't even make the "click" noise anymore. I believe, after doing some reading, that the cancellation plate is broken.

Anyone know how hard this is to replace?
Do I have to replace the whole mechanism?
Should I even do this myself?

I have a 2002 Ford Focus.

If you're handy, shouldn't be too big a deal. You can buy the part from the dealer directly and get a repair guide . . . . or maybe someone here has done that before on a Ford. I don't think it'd be that difficult. . .

:sm_up_there: F*cking with sh*t in a modern steering column is always difficult. See if you can replace it with a Chevrolet mechanism so it won't happen again. :sm_laughing:

See if there are screws beneath and above the column. If you get lucky, one side of the cover might simply unscrew. Or you might be able to pry the two halves apart enough to get in there and investigate. If it's not that simple, live with it or see if Paul will work on it.

There is a TSB ( Technical Service Bulletin )# 04-5-5 that Ford put out in March of 04. It describes the problem you are having. When the turn signal switch is replaced they want you to add a shim to the column assembly. I tried to copy/paste the article but the program is copyright protected and wont let me. . I have never replaced one on a Ford. It looks like the turn signal switch is part of the air-bag clockspring assembly. Messing with air bag style columns can be tricky . Might be best left to a pro.

I agree. But if you decide to do it yourself, just make sure the video is running.

Thanks a lot, I will PM you when I'm in town again. I just moved up to Bakersfield for the school year. I should be home for a weekend in the near future...
