Spent some time today driving this 69 4speed 427 Vette. T-tops off :) . It was kinda a beater. Needed lots of work, and the old man was bitching about spending 35 bucks for his lof.

Something about piloting a Stingray is just cool. Even if it only has 165hp. I love the long hood sunken around the wheels wells.

I know the owner of that car. His name is Kelley and he runs a lot of the PCA events. I met him at the NASA California speedway event. Nice guy. So what kind of spin around the block did you take his car on?

Yes, posting pictures of a customers car at your shop on the web and then talking about how cheap they are is NEVER a good idea.

I find it funny. Kelley is an ok guy. He pissed me off slightly. I let one of hte lead instructors drive my car that day. He was slow, but real aggresive in traffic. He was passing Kelley and then Kelley cut him off. Afterwards Kelley (who still thought I was driving) thought it was absurd that I would try to pass him. I spent the rest of the weekend putting my foot in his has. His fastest lap was a 1:58.XX to my 1:54.5. It pissed him off. Apparantly he has another GT3 cup cap (i.e. 3.6L caged spec racer). He was a "Racecar Driver".

I know there is no harm meant but " It's a small world after all". You never know who might know who! Years ago when I was a technician I was out on a roadtest and decided to drive thru and pick up food with a customers car. The customer happened to be eating inside and watched me drive thru with his car. Another time I was out on a roatest in a Medium duty tow truck and stopped and ran in Taco Bell to grab food. When I got back to work the Director of Operations called me in to ask me how Taco Bell was today. The tow truck company dispatcher picked up the truck moving on gps and when it stopped he ran the address and it came back as Taco Bell. He called to find out why his tow truck was at Taco Bell.

He said he didn't drive the car because it had slicks. If some tech posted pics of my car over the internet I'd feel proud.
As far as road testing, techs road test. They would be negligent not to. If you don't want someone else driving your car, learn how to work on it yourself.
C6, you really think that shop isn't going to take that $15K power plant of yours for a nice ride around the block up to 140mph before they call you to pick up the car? If I was caught I'd just say, need to make sure the rings seat! :D

We are required to road test all cars that get a 30 point inspection. I would never abuse or put at risk another persons car. I thought it was a cool car and not many people get to drive stuff like this around the block, just trying to share the experience.

When a tech works on your car, he owes you a duty to return to you a safe car. If the burden of precaution is less than the probability and severity of the risk (if it's easy to drive the car around the block and there's a probability it could save you risk of harm if the tires fall off or ball joint pops out) then the tech is negligent if he does not perform that duty. And the shop will be vicariously liable for your injuries and any damage to your car.
So legally, they should drive it.

Agreed. I think Throttle Crazy was just commenting on the possible joy riding angle (beyond duty), not that that's what Paul was doing in any sense. And secondly that some owners might get persnikittety if they found someone to be writing out about them being cheapskate, not that they could do anyything about it other than complain to one's boss. I don't think right to privacy applies. :smack:

That is exactly what I was saying. I was not trying to accuse anyone of doing anything wrong. It is completely the technicians job to roadtest a car to verify a customers concern and to verify correct operation after the repair. Although, I do occasionally get complaints from customers of both vehicles being roadtested to far and not far enough.
I just thought it was funny how there was a picture of the Corvette in front of the shop and a comment made of him being cheap. Then posted right after that C6 made mention of knowing the guy who owned one of the cars posted. It could have just as easily been someone who was friends with the guy who owned the Corvette. I just think when you are posting things on the Web for everyone to see you should use caution. No more!

My first semester was a year ago. :asshole::beer: If you want some legit assessment read what I wrote about negligence.
Funny thing about negligence in the automotive world, if you pay a tech to service your car and he fucks up causing you an accident (say your brakes fail) you are still on the hook to the other driver. Not him. But then you can sue him directly. Kinda strange to hear at first, but the policy behind it makes sense.
Btw, everything I've communicated to any of you either in the past, this present thread, or hereinafter is purely fictional and for your enjoyment alone. None of it is to be taken seriously as actual legal advice. :D

SO, when a shop test drives a car IN PUBLIC, and something fails and causes injury to an innocent bystander, the shop was "Doing it's duty?":pot_stir:

Yes. :) Although, the tech could also be negligent in testing. And the innocent bystander could sue for that. If the tech was not negligent, then the bystander would have a cause of action of negligence per se against the car manufacturer. :judge: I passed all of my Torts classes already, I know what I'm talking about. ;)
Wouldn't you rather a qualified electrician electrocute himself testing his work, rather than the person who paid him? Ben, feel free to step in an answer this one. :sm_laughing:

FYI, if you own a Mercedes and have the transmission serviced and the tech needs to reprogram it, he will need to get into 7th gear and allow it to downshift by itself coasting all the way without touching the brakes. They do this on public roads, tell me this sounds like it can be done legally.
