So I still am Jonsing for a bike a bit. While I'd LOVE to get a Triumph Street Triple, it's a bit pricey and maybe not the best choice for a first bike. I'm kinda down to an Yamaha FZ6 or an Suzukii SV650, but in reading some rider reviews, several guys mentioned the old Honda VFR circa 98 - 01 is even better as an entry level sport/touring bike than the later model SV and FZ. Are they just fan boys or is there something to it? They very specifically said up to 01, not later . . . something about the VTEC they switched to.

Touring bike? Is that anything like a cruiser bike? :fruit:

Not unless this is your idea of a Cruiser

In this case touring just implies the that it's not a Super Sport, performance only kind of a bike. Something you could commute on, or ride longer distances without being miserable. The seating positions vary a bit, but are generaly more upright and the engines are built/tuned for more torque and mid range for street riding as opposed to something like an R6 which is borderline F1 rev territory with very high power but not so much torque.

If you want torque and a sporty bike, why not a V-Twin? Like a Ducati Monster.

My choice would be the 3 cylinder Triumph, a great compromise between a Twin and I4.

The VFR is a double VTwin (I think) and the SV650 is a twin. The FZ is an I4.

I accidentally found myself in a Ducati dealer the other day. The 09' Monster is pretty cool looking, even more in person than in pictures. A bit pricey though. New, after all the taxes and everything like $10,500. I can get a brand new FZ6 for just over $6k and a brand new SV for about $7k OTD.

It's a hella nice place. Definitely has the "stylish" euro vibe going on. Maybe I should just get a Desmosedici and learn on that. Man I'd look good . . . until I turned it on a tried to ride. LOL

Seriously, this has got to be one of the most beautiful things on 2 wheels.

I wouldn't dream of starting on something like that. Plus I think it's like $70g and the limited production was instantly spoken for. I just think it's absolutely beautiful.

Hey guys been a while since i've been on here!
Have you guys ever driven any of the above listed bikes? haha, honestly, driving a bike (because riding seems passive) like a Ducati as a first bike is asking to DIE, a fast bike is WAY different than a fast car. I'd totally reccomend against anything expensive, loving/hating bikes is really common and you might find yourself unloading your investment really quick-and they have shitty resale value. Vettezuki, this is your first bike?? I thought the zuki was for suzuki...like, hayabusa perhaps?? haha anyway, i'm a suzuki fanboy so i'll admit i'm biased, but the SV is a great bike, light, cheap, quick and COMFORTABLE, thats the most important thing. R1s/CBRs look great, sound great, but arent very comfortable, especially if you havent driven a bike in a while or are just starting out.

O yeah, if you're planning to learn on this bike, a good way to start would be to take the MSF class, they teach you how to ride on light bikes, 250cc, so you get a good feel and dont waste your money on a crap bike to begin with. I took it at fullerton JC, but i think its held at the CADE building on orangethorpe and rose nowadays on the weekends

I thought you had been abducted. Yes, I won't be learning on a MotoGP Replica, that does seem unwise. :smack: Basically, if/when I get a bike it will be a Yamaha FZ6 or SV650.

The Zuki in my name is the Japanese suffix for "crazy about"; therefore, Crazy About Vettes. It honestly didn't occur to me until later that basically everyone would assume Suzuki, as in Vette + (Su)Zuki. Oh well.

I have riden(if its the incorrect spelling sorry) alot of bikes...I learned on a R1 and gsxr 1k my first bike was a gsxr 600 and my stunt bike which is now a go kart was a 92 cbr 600. :) If I give the advice for a bike its cause I have riden it. I only hope my knowledge can help others the sv and yammy are great starter bikes but the duck...well not so much. Oh my first bike i did streets was a 999 very very fun. I remember when i took the motorcycle saftey course I got to ride a rebel lol. I started on a sport bike riding a cruiser for the first time was well a little weird not going to lie. But if you haven't ever riden well even if you have its a great thing to do for the knowledge and cheaper insurance :) again when you get close to buying or choosing let me know we can go from there.

Yeah if you started riding on something big, the class is kinda just an easy way to get your license w/o the dmv test-and the dmv test is tough on a heavy bike so its almost worth it if the bike you own is bigger than 500cc.
Learning on an r1...yikes...i hope the owner was a really good friend, or you're really strong with long legs because everyone drops the clutch too fast the first time (if you were a kid when you started anyway haha) when i started learning at 15 or 16 it was a honda shadow, and quickly moved to a intruder 1500 (dad upgraded) and it was def an adventure...an R1/6 would probably have killed me hahaha. I'm sorry if i sounded condescending above, it wasn't intended to be. :)
