Sweet. My 82' Vette is an LS1(x) conversion with T56. Don't know what you plan on doing for wire harness, but if you want something super clean and minimized I recommend Speed Scene Wiring in TX.

Well, the vette will be done in a couple of weeks. So that's one. I will build a front splinter and then set up the suspension. Lots of changes there so it will take a while.
I have the procharger sitting in the garage for the stang. I actually have a lot of parts sitting waiting to get installed.
Finally, I got some shop space and buy in from some of my guys to try and finish the lemons car. Got to coordinate the pick up.
Should make for a fun summer.

About 6 months ago I realized my intake manifold was leaking. About 4 months ago I searched for intake manifold gaskets. Last month I ordered one. Two weeks ago I bought some high temp silicone. Last week I almost... Almost changed it out. But no.

I've lost three engines in the last six months. First the Devil Aveo, then both Mazdas for different reasons. Signed over the Devil Aveo for labor trade to do engine swap on Protege, and it runs now. Next up is the Miata and I'll have to figure out what I'm going to do with it then, since we also (had to) buy a new car; the xD, which is a great little car. Also the one buck truck started being a little bitch with fuel pump issues and I'm tired of it's leaky intake, so that's on the docket as well. So I have plenty of car shit going on since last august, just not a goddamn bit of it any fun.

Some of the older gents at work have bought some new cars, one a loaded Camaro, another a loaded Challenger (which honestly is my favorite looking) and our head of IT a brand new M5, which is pretty nasty all wrapped up in some refined packaging.

Oh, and the earthquake knocked down my wall which I had to rebuild and I'm dealing with the VA on behalf of my father; /shudders.

Pretty sure I must have been some kind of asshole in my previous life . . .:judge:

Your car broke down, but you have more than one car.

Your wall fell down, but you own your own home.

There's always problems in life, but you have a good life and you're a sexy bitch to boot. Now get out there and yank that Miata motor like yesterday. Unplug the harness, lay it over the fender, yanky yanky, swappy swappy, torquey torquey ;)

I have 3 projects set for this summer.

#1 New/Bigger brakes from the CTS, I just bought V2 front brakes and rotors.

#2 Getting another car I bought running, I bought by far the most rare car I will likely ever own. 1 of 800 ever made only 600 in the US. its an Isuzu impulse RS. Its a AWD turbo car.

#3 Putting a utility bed on my pickup and redoing the rear springs and maybe swapping out the rear axle. Plus recentering my H1 wheels for the correct offset.

My Mercedes needs more TLC and my miata that I got to DD while the mercedes was down, is also down now too. Excessive oil consumption, it ate all of its oil without smoke or leaks, have to replace the rod end bearing. Selling both of these after I finish fixing them, too worn out from working on them all the time.

Bought a new loaded Mazda3 to take over all duties

@blackax, what's cool or unique, other than being rare about the Impulse? Why'd you get it?

@firstshadow, that's interesting our 06' Miata did the same thing. Oile starvation but I never noticed much oil leaking or, smoke, or anything. Wife just pulled in the driveway with a hideous knocking sound and the first thing I checked was the oil, which was bone dry, yet everything looked fine otherwise. Boooh. It had never given us a lick of trouble up til then which was over 100k miles.

I need to fix the AC in the Durango, it sucks balls when it's in the 90s. I also have a 2" lift for it that I'll be installing soon as well.

The Typhoon will be getting a different turbo and a full exhaust made up.

The Jeep is damn near done with the theft repairs. I have brand new locks that just need to be installed and then it's done.

The 1991 impulse RS is very awesome (to isuzu guys) they only made 800 so not alot. It makes ok power 160 from a little 1.6 turbo, doesn't sound like much now but that was alot in 91, also she only weighs in at 2700 pounds, the lightest AWD car that i know of.

My plan for her is to take on miata's at places like Adams and such.

First thing I wanted to do was make a new rear bumper for the Explorer to hold my spare tire carrier. Phil want to go do the Rubicon this summer so I need the tire carrier back on to go. Since we planned to do our Father's Day four wheeling/hiking trip like usual I at the last minute decided to hurry up and make one I picked up the steel Friday afternoon and hurried Friday night/Saturday making a new bumper. It's not finished but it at least holds the tire now. I still need to cap the ends, plate under the hub, angle the hub mount and make a license plate mount with lights.

This Car is kicking my ass!!!!

So The car is still over heating, But I now know why! The guys before me removed the heat shields from the turbo and the exhaust and its dumping tons of heat into the cooling system. after 5 min of driving the turbo is over 800F.

Well over the past few weeks as I've been trying different things to solve the overheating I melted the O2 connector. So I need to get a new O2 sensor
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-ffvbvyc6f3s/U8YH8tyWB2I/AAAAAAAAMA8/Hd2z12Km-ek/w487-h865-no/IMG_20140715_220431.jpg

and today I noticed a small oil leak on the ground so I went to moved it and do some work, my belt shredded my wiring harness and shorted a some wires. I was able to fix most of then and only had to run one brand new wire.

Best case just bearings, but probably gonna need to turn the crank, hopefully it didn't thrash pistons or valves, but we just won't know until the engine is basically apart. Another couple G gone poof! I'll be seeling it when I get it back in good running order and cleaned up a little bit. Will be sad to see it go, but we were forced to get a new car when I had a few go down at the same time and I can't really justify having too much around that isn't being used. I'd probably even sell the Vette if the right offer hit my desk out of nowhere, though that is astronomically unlikely given how cheap quite nice used cars are now.

Hey guys. Well Ive had my 89 260E for just over a week now and its running WAAAY better then when I first got it. After some fuel cleaner, fresh fuel, a tune up, some tuning and a new fuel pressure regulator, it purrs like a kitten at idle and drives smooth on the hwy. Just waiting on a fuel accumulator to solve my hard hot start issue and hopefully Ill be done for a while, if i pass smog.

Today though I tackled a mechanically simple repair that is a big PITA. I replaced the leaking engine oil galley plug (threaded freeze plug for block heater). the car sat for 5yrs and who knows how old the coolant was so it ate a small hole in the plug. Seems that this happens to quite a few m103's. The car was leaking about a gallon of coolant a week. Of course, the hex part of the plug rounded off so we had to "chisel" it off with a big screwdriver. Wasnt too hard to do but I did remove the rear exhaust manifold for better access to the plug. Thank goodness its a CA car and all the nuts and bolts came off without a fight. Installed new $7 plug, used a high quality flange sealant on the threads, filled the coolant system and was good to go. I did though, find plenty of junk in the block behind the plug so i stuck a hose in the block and flushed it all out till the water came out clear. Filled with Dex-Cool, 70%dex 30% water for now. Not a job I want to do again.

Heres some pics.

After plug removal. This plug is threaded for the installation of a block heater. Thank goodness. Lol

The vette is NA and that is the initial tune. It's a 416ci stroker with ported LS3 heads from West coast machine, a fast 102R, and a custom ground cam from Howard's cam. The build is loosely narrated on the top flight corvette Facebook page. It's basically the same motor as before expect with upgraded valve train components.

Final numbers were 530 hp and 501 ftlbf. Lol so much for breaking into the 600's Torque curve is good. Pretty much same as before. I was hoping to pick some power up with the 102R intake and the 102mm throttle body. It looks like the cam is the most limiting factor. I may go with a bigger cam latter after I get the car sorted out again. This lets me take the weight down to 2915 with me in it. I will have to get weighed in and see where I can drop weight from.

I've seen some absolutely cherry C5Zs for low $20k, good C5s around $15k~, I *vaguely* recall seeing a POS for < $10k.

I'd be tempted to sell my Vette at around $20k, but that ain't gonna happen. Still just plan to keep it and futz with it over the years.

Gotta be honest, I was wonder'n how you thought you were going to crack 600WHP with just a tune unless it was like the worst.tune.ever. :jester:

But out of curiosity, is that a street gas or race gas tune?

Well there was no real tun in it before. I was always running the break in time from vette doctors. They changed up some valve train components and the addition of the intake and throttle body I thought might get me there with an actual tune. It's currently tuned for 91.

Don't care whether you believe it or not, they are out there. SEVERAL for under 10k. I don't share the deals I find, I buy them. These ads don't last for days or weeks to corroborate, you jump or they disappear, that's how I'm successful at hunting.

I have the complete kit and compressor etc to convert my 89 GTA to R134 and it needs a new top, but since I drive it about !000 miles a year I just can't get motivated to spend the time and money.

So last week I dug out some old model cars I built as a kid that need TLC and am doing that. LOL

I helped Phil pull the crankshaft out of the 454 in his motorhome on Saturday. It's the first time he or I have pulled a crankshaft without removing the engine. Pulling an engine from a motorhome is not fun. We had to pull the trans to get the oil pan off but other than that it wasn't too bad. It took us about 6 hours.

The reason we pulled it is because the the rear main seal has been leaking. I guess on the last trip Phil took it on (to Oregon) it started leaking really bad on the way home. When he got home he checked the crankshaft end play and there was a ton so he knew the thrust bearing was done.

The crankshaft is shot but he has a brand new factory crank for it already.

Then on Sunday I pulled the supercharger off the Cobra because the seals are leaking again so the intake is covered in oil. I didn't take any pictures but this time I'm going to replace the seals myself.

The seals that Vortech uses are fucking garbage, along with the bearings.

07-31-2014, 12:49 PM
There's a company that makes their own seals that are supposed to resolve the issues with the original. They use a different material and also a light tension spring. I hadn't planned on replacing the the bearings because they aren't making noise but I broke one on the compressor shaft while pressing the impeller off so I'm going to replace those. They're the ones that usually go bad anyways because they are on the high speed side.

Tons of companies make spring guard seals for that. Vortech cheaps out.

Well H1 is slang for the non-military hmmwv, So H1 wheels are the military 8 lug wheels, and to run them on most trucks you need to re-center them. And this is my test wheel so I could figure out the process.

Don't care whether you believe it or not, they are out there. SEVERAL for under 10k. I don't share the deals I find, I buy them. These ads don't last for days or weeks to corroborate, you jump or they disappear, that's how I'm successful at hunting.

Next time you find a deal on a C5 for 5k, and you decide not to 'pull the trigger,' send it my way. Ill buy it, and give you $100. I will also swear my undying allegiance to you, and forever concede that are correct about everything. Win, win, win.

What kinda new?

I'll be finishing the MX5 in a week or so, at which point it will have a fully rebuilt engine, literally brand new set of brakes, essentially new top. You've seen it. I'll give you a good deal if it's the sort of thing you might like. Fun to drive, easy to park in cities, easy on the gas.

Still looking for a car for Kristina. It was too cockpit like for her. Id like to get her something awd for safety. Maybe an 07/08 wrx hatchback, or a tdi quattro anything would be really cool.

But if Guy finds me a C5 for 5k, Im buying it, and she can drive my GC. Ha

I do love your MX5 though. I really wish she had gone for it.

If it was a manual I may have forced her into it. She really wants an auto, but I dont want to be limited so certain cars the rest of my life because she is afraid to learn. Might have to force her to get over it now.

My uncle is in the same situation. He had a turbo RX7, a nitrous RX7, an RX8, and a Porsche all in manual transmissions. But he always has an automatic lease for his wife. If he just got her to learn to ride that damn bicycle, she wouldnt think twice about it. And he'd have a few hundred dollars of extra disposable income every month.

We had a new focus for less than 24 hours, it was falling apart and the quality control wasn't great so we took it back :)

It was a basic focus hatch with the dct (what an... interesting transmission.)

Passenger front door was catching on the rear door's weather seal, front brakes were dragging, radio/bluetooth froze up, rear seatback wouldn't latch into place. Inside made us feel very claustrophobic!

My new Mazda3 hatch on the other hand with 2.5L 6 speed auto (manual becoming available this year for this motor!) has been nothing but fantastic. 180ish hp/tq and I average 28mpg city, no problems with it over the 3 months and 2k+ miles I've put on it, absolutely love it :)

I'm not sure what year you had but I have a hard time believing that all went down in a 24 hour period without noticing it on the test drive or before purchasing it. I had one for a week and loved it, Ray has one and is thoroughly pleased with it as well.

I can believe the Focus was craptastic. People say Ford is a front runner for reliability, but I dunno. I still hear about issues on their new cars a lot. Debilitating electronic issues with the Fiesta, radio is tied into the ignition... Genius. Still hear probs about Ford gas truck transmissions.

Since they're recent increase in popularity and production, their QC has fallen again. They have several vehicles in the Top 10 for reliability issues.

It was a 2014 with 10 miles on it. Didn't get to test the passenger door since I was the driver on the test drive.

The brakes, I suspect, may have been from the mechanic who went to gas it up. When he got back, he came blazing into the lot and the car reeked of brakes when he pulled up. Definitely wasn't the same after that.

The other things happened the next day when we had it all on our own.

So much for PDI on the dealer side, eh?

Shannon's Santa Fe was a nice vehicle until the head gasket blew. Good price and had a pretty good mix of power and fuel economy. We might have looked at another Hyundai possibly but their SUVs were not large enough for what we wanted.

Just got my motorcycle license, and picking up the miata crankshaft today!

I get a hankering to get a bike again from time to time.

Then I watch people drive . . . :judge:

My motor was biffed. "Fortunately" found a local one that was basically new. Just waiting for some trim bits and a coolant resevoir. The old one was cracked and was probably part of the "moments from disaster" scenario that led to the failure. I'm going to have to put these cars on a regular (weekly?) check to make sure all fluids and systems are go. This has been expensive (another one) side project that probably, though not necessarily, could have been avoided.

Almost finished with the Miata. Had to do swap the engine. Added new brakes all around and replaced some damaged trim. After I replace the cracked windshield, other than the CD player not working so good, it will be in overall excellent running condition and pretty good cosmetic condition, including a basically new engine. Sadly I have to sell it.

I finished rebuilding the supercharger tonight. It was pretty easy. Unfortunately I was in a hurry to finish tonight so I didn't take any pictures. The only issue on found during my quick 5 mile test drive is that I didn't tighten the new supercharger belt enough. It slipped every time I jumped on it so I tightened it up after but haven't driven it again. I think the test drive was too short to tell if I still have the burning oil smell but I'll find out Thursday when I drive it to a customers. Hopefully the leaking seal was the cause of it.

Traded a back up turbo I had for a FAST setup for the Ty, can't wait to install it with a better set of heads, cam, AFPR, and fuel pump. Also puting the battery in the trunk. What do I have to do to be able to run at the track with it in the trunk?

There are only two companies that legal boxes that I know of, Taylor and Moroso. I have the Taylor box in both the Chevelle and Cobra. For it to be legal, you have to have an external shut off switch that will kill the engine in case of a crash. I'll take some pictures of how I have the Chevelle and Cobra and post them up in a seep rate thread for you. The hardest part was figuring out how to make it so above 3000 the alternator didn't keep the engine running. Also, when deciding where to mount the box know that one of the bolts holding the box down has to go through the frame/subframe. At least that was the NHRA when I did both of mine.

I have the taylor one too, just have to make sure the charge line goes to the "out" portion of the shutoff switch, also putting a breaker inline on the charge line is a very good idea. I got one from graingers thats 150a and resettable for $30

I did it all by my lonesome. Only took me three nights (4.5 hours or so). You have to take apart a bunch of crap and of course everything fights you.
