Diff drama

Nope! Not the vette! Haha

Dads Avalanche ate through that diff in less than a year. It works in reverse, but it wont engage in drive and it makes a horrible grinding/ whining noise. Any ideas? Time for a third diff?

What failed in the first one and what failed this time? Is it eating bearings or are you breaking teeth on the ring or pinion?

On the last one the carrier exploded along with the ring gears. Literally exploded, right through the diff cover.

You put a completely different diff assembly in it last time, didn't you? What were you doing when it happened?

I wasn't, but my Dad said he was just accelerating to get in the freeway. I don't doubt that he at least punched it.

That shouldn't be enough to break the carrier and ring gear. I've only cracked a carrier once with all the racing and off-roading that I've done over the years. That was the stock carrier in the Cobra and that was after years of 6000rpm launches.

Didn't you replace the entire rear end last time instead of rebuilding the one that was in the truck? What did you do with the original rear end? What broke in it? I can check to see if Phil has heard of common rear end issues with them. I know my friends wife has one and it hasn't had any issues.

Yup, replaced the entire rear end a year ago. I've read about issues with these online. I told him we should put in the 8 lug 14 bolt and just weld on the new perches. He just wants a quick fix and I think he's going to sell it in a few years.

I don't know much about diffs, but I do know that in the past few years he started running the mud bogger tires. I wonder if they put too much stress on it?

I'd just fix what ever is wrong with the original axle. You know what's wrong with the replacement so you know it needs a new carrier, ring and pinion and rebuild kit. So pull the original apart and see what's wrong with it and fix which ever is cheaper.

The original carrier exploded through the differential cover. Took it to Adams Steel and got like $25 for it.
