There is a strong possibility I will be scoring a 4.0L Jeep I6. It has 190K miles but still smogs and runs like a champ.

But Id feel silly installing it without freshening it up at all, so, what are the high wear parts in a motor? Im thinking, new valve guides in the head (skipping the valve job), flex hone the cylinder and new rings, new crank and rod bearings, and a new timing chain.

Anything else? Im sure the lifters and bores will be fine, machine shops dont really even touch the lifter bores. But how about the cam bearings? I would think that they dont wear out nearly as fast since there isnt much rotating mass on a cam.

AND if anyone plans to lecture me about doing it once and doing it right, please also answer my question :) :p

Lap the valves and install new valve springs.

Think the valve seats will be fine? Its an iron head. Can you get a tool to lap valves yourself?

Yes, you can pick up one of the cheap suction cup style ones at any autoparts store as well as the compound.

Thanks man. Whats your experience with cam bearings? Have you ever really seen them wear out?

Look at the lifter and rocker components. The rocker bridges might be twisted like mine were.

I think the 4.0 motors are prone to valve issues. The valves stop rotating in the guide, causing abnormal wear. We pull the rockers and look for scoring on the valve tips. Not sure what years are effected, but there is a factory TSB.

You can use a hose that can fit on the valve stem as well and just pull on it and twist.

See it in action here (www.powerblocktv.com/episodes/HP2012-19). Just skip to about 13 minutes.

Thanks for that video! It's great. I didn't realize that lapping valves meant checking them. I thought it meant taking off material to make the edges true again. Good to know. ...So if they seat correctly, no need to machine or replace anything.

I have an 88 4.0 long block with intake and exhaust sitting in the shop...I want to get rid of it..std bore was running when I pulled it.

$400.00 is what I want...will take ?
Mileage is about 75,000--- was running when pulled. Head is off for inspection and STD bore. Longblock with intake and exhaust.

I think the rings will be fine, if there's no scoring I'd run them. Youre already getting kicked in the balls having to get your crank welded up and machined back down, why kick yourself any harder?

New crank? new bearings? new cam? new rings... fuck. Take a page out of the book of Chiltons. NOTHING gets replaced unless it is out of spec. You're building a motor, not a china doll collection.

Yea...thinking like that is what engine builders love......:bang:

Always build the short block the BEST you can afford..then go up a step or two. :judge:

Oh yea, one more thing......I do not know of one TRUE engine builder that uses Chiltons for building an engine:smack:

I may not have your experience, but you know I can build an engine. Case in point, the last two times I melted a piston, I ordered just the one piston, just the one ring set, just the one rod bearing, copper sprayed the MLS HGs to reuse them... and you saw it, my motor runs like a champ. Spent prob $130. If the rest of the parts are good, why junk them?

You did do it right the first time so you didn't have to build it twice. You used good parts so no reason to replace anything but the damaged parts.:p

Generally true, very good insight.

But, first I dont think our back and forth ended with me asking a question, but rather a poignant remark :)

Plus, the witness response doesnt always have to be congruent with the answer youre seeking. If the question suggests the answer strongly enough, the witness' response may be irrelevant.

So in this case what I ask or state is relevant ....cause in learning one has to teach ...one has to learn? Correct or not correct??

I wasnt being sarcastic at all, I was serious.

But there is nothing to learn here. Of course new parts would be better. And a 502 would also be better. And a 557 would be better than that. This is a subjective cost vs benefit argument. There is nothing to learn because there is no correct answer.

Ill clean up this thread when I get to a comp, we've hijacked it.

Agreed that you have more experience with engines, more to teach, and I have less, and more to learn. :judge: But remember that just because you know more, doesn't mean that you are inherently right.

"Dude I think my wife is cheating" "Swap and LSx into your car, you'll forget all about it"

300lbs is too much. Voluptuous or curvy is nice, wider than tall is not.

enkeivette

Speaking of 300lbs, look at this girl, very cool story. But there is no way she is 300lbs in that pic. She looks smaller than my Dad did at 290, and there is now way she had the sort of muscle density that he did.

I need to post the story I read after it in DA... involves a 300lb woman killing a man by sitting on him
