The second day of the New York Auto Show (http://www.autoblog.com/new-york-auto-show/) festivities have just kicked with the annual World Car of the Year awards, and we've just learned that the top honors for 2013 go to the seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf (http://www.autoblog.com/volkswagen/golf/). The win marks the second in a row for Volkswagen (http://www.autoblog.com/volkswagen/), which also collected the hardware in 2012 for its Up! supermini (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/up/).
The World Car awards are handed out by a panelist of 66 auto journalists from around the world, including Autoblog European Editor, Matt Davis. Runners-up for the big award included the Audi A3 (http://www.autoblog.com/audi/a3/), Land Rover Range Rover (http://www.autoblog.com/land+rover/range+rover/), Mazda6 (http://www.autoblog.com/mazda/mazda6/), Mazda CX-5 (http://www.autoblog.com/mazda/cx-5/), Mercedes-Benz A-Class (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/a-class/), Peugeot 208 (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/208/), Porsche Boxster (http://www.autoblog.com/porsche/boxster/)/Cayman (http://www.autoblog.com/porsche/cayman/), Scion FR-S (http://www.autoblog.com/scion/fr-s/)/Subaru BRZ (http://www.autoblog.com/subaru/brz/)/Toyota GT86 (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/gt86/) and Volvo V40 (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/v40/).
Also announced this morning is the winner of the 2013 World Performance Car award. In this category, the Porsche Boxster (http://www.autoblog.com/porsche/boxster/) and Cayman (http://www.autoblog.com/porsche/cayman/) has been picked by the jury over a number of other contenders, including the Aston Martin Vanquish (http://www.autoblog.com/aston+martin/vanquish/), Audi RS5 (http://www.autoblog.com/audi/rs5/), BMW M6 (http://www.autoblog.com/bmw/m6/), BMW M135i (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/m135i), Ferrari F12 Berlinetta (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/f12+berlinetta), Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG (http://www.autoblog.com/mercedes-benz/sl63+amg), Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster (http://www.autoblog.com/mercedes-benz/sls+amg/), Renault Clio Sport (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/clio/) and the Toyobaru triplets.
Moving to more eco-friendly matters, the World Green Car award has been handed to the - surprise, surprise - Tesla Model S (http://www.autoblog.com/tesla/model+s/). The all-electric sedan topped the Renault Zoe (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/zoe/), Smart ForTwo Electric Drive (http://www.autoblog.com/smart/fortwo/), Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid (http://www.autoblog.com/volkswagen/jetta/) and Volvo V60 Plug-In Hybrid Diesel (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/v60/).
Lastly, the annual World Car Design laurels have been awarded to the impossibly pretty Jaguar F-Type (http://www.autoblog.com/tag/f-type/), besting other attractive finalists including the Aston Martin Vanquish, Renault Clio, Land Rover Range Rover, Mazda6 and Volkswagen Golf.
