As some of you know Eric is currently deployed in Kosovo and his tore doesn't end until the end of this year. I was talking to him last week and he asked me to look out for a Fox body for him for under $5000. Well the following day I found an 89 LX listed for $3500. I called the guy and went to take a look at it. The car is in great shape inside and out and already has a bunch of bolt-ons like a 70mm BBK TB, 70mm BBK EGR spacer, BBK CAI, BBK shorty headers, BBK catted X-pipe, Flowmaster after cat exhaust, BBK subframe connectors, Eibach Sportline lowering springs and FRP 3.73 gears. The guy also has some extra stuff that hasn't been installed yet like new weather stripping for the doors, white face qauges and a gauge pod with gauges. He also has a complete extra set of rims and tires because he runs different tires in the winter than he does in the summer. We offered him $3000 and he took it. I'll be going to pick up the car tonight so I'll post some pictures up of it for Eric since he hasn't even seen His new car yet.

Correct. Anybody with even a little cash/liquidty can pick up toys for pennies on the dollar. It even extends to big ticket new or almost new stuff. I've seen Brand New GT 500s in the 30s. I think Sean said something like 07/8 ZO6s going for $50k +-.

We're in a strange situation, a combination of deflation of prices and MASSIVE increase in the money supply. I'll give you one guess what happens when things start to pick up a little. :nutkick:

Guy over here has a 08 Z06 he was trying to sell. So far the only offer has been $48,000. I should have that in spare change ( well, in a perfect Brutal world ).:judge:

Eric, you are now the owner of a 1989 Mustang. Here are the pictures. Sorry for the poor quality but it's dark and Amy has our good camera with her at Kath's graduation. I'll take some more tomorrow afternoon. I also have two boxes of extra parts.

The interior looks new! That will make a fantastic drag car when you're done with it :D

How is the paint?

Congrats Eric :drink:

He wants to start road racing it so the suspension will be designed towards that. The interior is in pretty good shape as is the paint. There are a few rock chips on the hood but no dents and there is one scratch on the drivers rear quarter panel that I think I can buff out.

Very cool. Here is an article on swapping a Cobra IRS into a Fox body (http://www.mouthbreather.net/IRSSWAP.HTML) if he decides to go that route. I know a lot of the Cobra guys are looking for a solid swap to make a drag car so maybe he could trade it out.

alright, time for me to contribute to the thread - first off - I gotta thank Ron for getting this done for me, I'm so stoked right now.
Secondly, Sean - I already had that article bookmarked
Next - The pictures are awesome... I'm going to start planning the first few mods now that I have the pictures - I think the first thing to go is the black molding - I'm going to white it out. And I'll fix up any other paint issues in the process.

Last thing - I've been pretty busy over here - but I've been trying to check in every so often on the RX-snake project! That thing looks like it's going to be a lot of fun. I wish I could be there to see it come to life. But great job on everything so far - make sure you guys keep posting pictures on here as things get done - and use this thread to leave me suggestions for my car, any input will be helpful... I'm thinking I want to get into NASA TT because they have a regional series, but we'll see what ends up happening... I also want the car to be functional for the street legal drags just to go out and make some passes when everyone else goes...

Thanks again everyone, and see you guys at the end of the year :)

If he does swap out the Solid for IRS, the best of course would be for a straight trade with another Cobra with an IRS. If not, I know a car that may at some point be in need of a solid rear end from a Mustang. :)

I'll have to do some research on the NASA TT series to see what kind of regulations they have?

I just read up on heads and I guess for the AFR 185's you have to flycut the stock pistons because the valves are bigger. It sounds like it's much easier to go with AFR 165's because they work with the stock pistons. Also, it sounds like you can stay smog legal with an E303 Cam and AFR 165 while making well over 300+whp. Considering that car probably weighs in at under 3000lbs I think it would be a very entertaining driver.

This is what I have on the Cobra (Crane 2040 which is the same as the E303 with AFR 165's). I went with the 165's because I had stock pistons when I bought them but then I broke the pistons and put in Probe SRS forged pistons that will clear the 2.02/1.60 values on the 185's. I wish I would have bought the 185's.

Before Eric adds heads, cam, intake, etc. he will need to rebuild the short block because it has 187,000 miles on it. It still runs great but I wouldn't add those things until he has a fresh short block. I use to have an 88 GT that I bought with 189,000 miles on it. I drove it until it had over 230,000 and then sold it when I bought the Cobra. I sold it to a friend and he drove it for two more years before selling it. The 5.0 is a good engine.

It won't cost that much to rebuild the short block and add new Probe SRS pistons. That way he can run any head he wants as long as it is CARB legal. Same goes for the cam. He'll be driving the car a lot on the street so I won't let him add anything to it that isn't 50 state legal. That's the way I built the Cobra so I know he can get a lot of power out of it and still be legal.

Ron, do you know what the difference in flow rate between the 165's and the 185's are? How much power do you think you'd gain if you stepped up?

Back in August of 05 5.0 Mustang and Super Fords magazine did a comparison between the two on a mild 347 and the 185's made 17hp and 16tq more than the 165's. I think on my supercharged engine that there would be a greater increase. Here's a link the article. http://airflowresearch.com/articles/article102/A-P1.htm

It wouldn't be worth selling my 165's and buying 185's but for Eric I would have him buy the 185's instead of the 165's. For me I'm just going to port the 165's when I do my next build.

Ahhh, I missed that in the article. Can you port out the 165's far enough to make them the same? Please excuse my ignorance on porting. I really need to setup that class with Glenn so I can learn about this stuff.

Depends on whether I have the money to add them. If not, I'll just run the 1.90's. Both have 1.60 exhaust valves.

Porting them to 185cc is going to push the limit of the flow of the 1.90 valve. Especially about 5,000 rpm and above.:drink:

Question:::: Anybody know if the sunroof/moonroof would require any additional safety gear for racing? Or if it would cause any problems for tech inspections at any tracks (drag or road course).

No problem, that's what uncles are for. Do you want me to have Phil come over and I can get a picture of your car doing a huge burnout going slideways through an intersection?

Nothing special needed for the sunroof. As Ben stated it just has to be closed.

actually... I would prefer if you could get that on video

but if not, a video like we did of the chevelle and my bike for the first drag video would be cool... also, can you get a couple of pictures of the rear of the car straight on but one from a high angle and one from a low angle? If you have time - if not, no big deal...

Eric, you should take out the solid rear and put in an IRS. Wink wink, nod. ;)

I want to.. but I have to find one for realllly cheap, and I have to be careful because I still want to buy the front suspension for the Explorer too... So if you happen to know somebody - wink wink, nod...

Once you get back and we fix the syncro we can go to the track and I'll run you in the Cobra. Sorry Amy said to change it to I'll beat you in the Cobra instead of run.

Here are the pictures. Are they what you wanted?

Those shorty headers should bring in some nice cash on EBay towards some long tubes.

Sean, you're not a bad driver. Anyone who can shift a 500whp car without sliding into a wall deserves respect.

No long tubes for Eric, they aren't 50 state legal. The exhaust is already done on the car so he's set. All he needs is to freshen up the shortblock, port the heads, change the cam and port the intake and I think he could make 260-280whp. That should be enough power for 12's at 103-106 with a good tire.

psh... 12's? who wants 12s... haha. :D

will that Lunati cam that Jeremy had be good for that or should I get the E303? Also, what if I got the 185cc heads and the cobra intake manifold? what would the difference in power be with that?

That Lunati cam I gave Jeremy would be perfect. It has almost the same specs as the E303 but has a little more lift. I was afraid to run it with my stock pistons because of the additional lift but you'll have to change your piston to run the 185's anyways. I think you would put down between 330and 350rwhp with those.

Well, that does it......another Damn Mustang I'll have to avoid.:drink:

We've got some fast Fords around here. I'm thinking there are more of them than Chevys. Most of the FORD leave me alone, cause of the air cleaners above the hood. That's fine by me.

I need to build that NEW motor soon. I need a good machine shop here close to HB.

350 sounds good

first things first though - gotta get the explorer taken care of!
I'll order the suspension when I'm in Indiana so that I can pick it up when I get back home and start the install when I get back from NY in January.
