Got myself another 5.0 finally

Hey guys back on the forum after going through a 5.0 an svo a 68 bug and now I'm back with a black all stock 5 speed 89 5.0! Only problem is it didn't pass smog cause of fuel fumes test. Could it be just the gas cap? Went to the gas station and it looks to be the original gas cap and is very loose. I replaced it already but I'm nit sure if I should re test it or just get it to "pass" smog through someone. Any input appreciated. Ill post some pics soon.

Fix it and get it to pass legally. I would check all the EVAP hoses to make sure none are broke or cracked. I had one break on the Explorer before.

Thanks ron ill do that this weekend along w my full time up n clean up of the throttle body, maf, and all that other good stuff. I gotta relearn how to work on these 5.0s again.

no way! that car looks great. I would rock it turbines and all. I am willing to bet that in the 3 linear miles of vacuum hose that ford used on those cars you have a leak and its running rich.

Lol I'm gonna go with chrome pony's. I wouldn't doubt the vacuum leak. I wanna replace all the plastic lines with hard line. Its on my list of things to do. Once the car warms up it goes away. I'm sure I can chase it down. You guys live kinda local to me right? Lakewood CA

So I did a bunch of work on my fox only to realize my check engine light doesn't come on when the key is on. I did a full tune up plugs, cap, wires, rotor, pcv valve and grommet, fuel filter, oil change, timing adjustment, base idle, tps, cleaned TB, cleaned MAF, new gas cap, new lines to evap system. But it fails visual inspection for CEL. Anyone know where I can get a "smog" done. I've been looking around but to no avail. If anyone can help me out I'd appreciate it!

What codes are you getting? Don't try to find a corrupt smog guy, just fix this issue. If it's 100% stock, there's no reason it shouldn't pass. Find out the codes and go from there.

x2 on codes. if you dont have a reader get one. mine stays in the glove box thats how often I have to use it.

Don't have a code reader yet. The reason I'm leaning towards that route is more or less because I don't have any time. I work and go to school M-F full time both. So I leave at 6:30AM (Sometimes 5:30am) and don't get home till 11pm. and on the weekends I can barely get an hour or two in on the car because I gotta help out my girl with our 4 month old. It is all stock and should pass but the CEL won't even light up with the key turned. It could be simple but I don't have time to diagnose.

The CEL doesn't light up at all whether i turn the key to on position or when I try to start it.

It should turn on when I am starting the car only?

Haven't pulled the cluster off yet. I might try to do that right now and see if that's the issue. I'll report back

Bulb was out. I need to replace and check for codes again before I smog it. I went past the 10 day time limit to transfer the title to my name so I think ill mess with it a little more before I try to smog it.

Little update. Took the car to a shop n it threw like 5 codes. Idle speed too high, o2 sensor on drivers side bad, Egr not opening, neutral drive switch failure, and a/c input too high. I installed a new Egr, o2 sensor and coolant temp sensor. Also my driver side motor mount is completely gone. Never changed it before so thinking if letting a shop take care of it.the guy told me 150 out the door for parts n labor. Can anyone beat that lol?

Motor mount should be easy to do and is only $22 at Autozone. Just put a jack under the engine and jack it up enough to remove the old mount and install the new one. So with the fixes did you get it to pass smog?

Did not get to take it to a shop yet. Gonna mess with it a little more before I take it. I'll probably take it by the end of the week. Thanks for the encouragement ron! Appreciate it.

You're correct about the mounts too. I've done it on my old 5.0 it took all of about an hour all together. Ill give it a go in Thursday.

A "smog" will run you 30% of the value of that car, its stock, figure out how to do it legit.

Youll find the leaks when you pull that motor to get it to make power Im sure ;)
