Well, here is the new ride. I'm fucking exhausted and i'll post the story tomorrow. But for now i'll say the truck runs like absolute shit, interior is trashed and the trans is on its way out. But its a diesel and its blue and i'm already buying goodies for it.

Well congrats and that sucks, lol.

Shaolin Crane
11-17-2012, 12:20 AM
Yeah, I wasn't expecting the trans issue. The OD light is flashing and I can smell burning transmission fluid and it barely gets out of its own way and the EGT's are through the roof. I'll start tinkering tomorrow. Just winding down before I pass out.

I am sure you will have it running almost as good as new in no time.

Thanks guys. Today I tried pulling the codes and my scanner wouldn't pull them. I have a feeling whoever did the xlt interior swap didnt hook up the OBDII system properly. I checked it for blow by and it passed easily. No apparent wire frays so i'll need to start replacing sensors.
First things on the list:
Replace windshield and head liner while its out
Fix gear selector handle, its sloppy and keeps me from being able to turn the key
Seat foam kit and possibly an upholstery kit depending on their cost. If not, i'll make new ones.
Trace down white smoke at start up
Erratic idle
Battery issue
Replace head lights

I went down to the yard to pull some lights and found out the want $36 each. Fuck that, a new set, with ambers and trim are $63.

Also ordered SS bellowed up pipes for the super duty turbo setup. The stock ones are leaking terribly so its a win win. Also need to track down a GTP-38r and late 99 spider and intercooler. Going to grap a set of late 99 heads to redo, new valve springs, smoothed chambers, new cups, freeze plugs, seals and a fresh deck. Seller is throwing in the 3" turbo plenums for free.

Depending on when my other goodies from the 08 sells will determine when i get some stage 3 injectors from my buddy. This setup should make for a very reliable 400rwhp and mid 20's mileage wise.

I think I know where that turbo is. I believe my buddy has a rebuilt on. I can ask him if you want me to.

Shaolin Crane
11-18-2012, 09:37 PM
Sure, but the 38r isnt rebuildable. The gt-38 is however.

Damian
11-18-2012, 09:48 PM
He has a GTP-38, not the R though. Waiting on him for a price.

Damian
11-18-2012, 09:51 PM
You should be able to rebuild a BB turbo, just remove the bearing and the housing hey are in.

Shaolin Crane
11-18-2012, 09:52 PM
The cartidge costs as much as a new turbo. Pretty sure they never made a GTP-38 for powerstrokes. Only a GT-38 and a GTP-38R

Damian
11-18-2012, 11:19 PM
He says he can get one. It's the guy you met over here Nick, he works for a company in Fontana that sells and rebuilds turbos for Garrett.

Shaolin Crane
11-19-2012, 12:15 AM
What's the price range? Cause a new one runs $1187

Shaolin Crane
11-28-2012, 03:41 PM
If you haven't noticed i've had alot on my mind
However I didn't stop finding the parts I need. Got everything, intercooler, crossover tubes, intercooler pipes, late 99 turbo, bands boots and plenums blah blah. I have about $400 into the swap.

Intercooler isn't picture cause it's still on my dads truck.

Just need to get the crossover/up pipes in which I ordered 10 days ago and some injector o-rings and crush sleeves and i'm all set with the motor until I can afford a transmission.

Shaolin Crane
11-28-2012, 03:44 PM
Oh, also need a wicked wheel and the manual boost controller and then i'm set. Truck should still make in the 350rwhp range even with the "stock" parts.

I forgot, what was the purpose of this vehicle? Are you flipping it or using it?

Shaolin Crane
11-28-2012, 09:26 PM
Using it, sick of dealing with smog for diesels and I need a truck. Its gonna take some elbow grease to get it to my standards but i'm use to that

Says china.

Shaolin Crane
12-04-2012, 09:35 PM
Yep. Probably would have come sooner if I ordered it direct from china. The company that had them "in-stock" took 8 business days to "inform" me that they were being dropped shipped. Fuckers. Then tried to cancel my order (probably cause I stacked a bunch of coupons) because the manufacturer was out of stock. So I called them myself and what do ya know? They had a few hundred and didn't know what I was talking about. So I called the company on it and surprise surprise I got a tracking number the next day.

Got my chip installed in the truck today and it runs very well. Odd because when I use the other tunes the rough idle and stumbling goes away. Should be on the road pretty soon.

Damian

I'm glad you got it working good, too bad you have to pay for someone else's screw up or laziness.

Shaolin Crane
02-05-2013, 10:45 PM
Yep, story of my life. Some day i'll buy a vehicle and leave it stock. That day is long away though.
I scored a 4" banks down pipe for $40. Just need a 3" body lift to clear it mostly then cut away some of the floor pan while the carpet is out. Should only need about a 2" bubble after the body lift. Then I can run the rims/tires off Johns truck when we're both in the position to make changes.

Right now the goal is just to change all the problematic stuff, I have new injector o-rings, valve cover harnesses, turbo, intercooler, piping and all the shit to flush the trans out.

Shaolin Crane

Also finally tracked down this profuse leak coming from the engine. Apparently the early 7.3s have a mechanical fuel pump driven by the cam in the valley of the engine. Well I guess the plunger breaks off and starts to spray out from there. Add another to the list.

Started the swap today and everything went pretty smooth. Typical mexico truck, bumper held on by bailing wire, tape holding on everything else. I was ecstatic to find all the rusted out bolts were barely finger tight and everything damn near fell apart when I shook it. So that's likely the cause for the extreme egt's I was dealing with. No matter, pics are hosting now. Tomorrow i'm going to pick up a few fasteners and my buddy with drop off my after cooler for me and I should finish this bad boy up baring an unforeseen road blocks

Shaolin Crane
04-22-2013, 02:01 PM
Amazing, nearly everything was loose and once I pulled the old turbo everything nearly fell off the truck. Now that I have no leaks it makes great boost and pulls hard.
