Wanted to ask if anyone here uses or has had any experience with any data logger apps for mobile devices? I just got the full version of 'Torque' on my android phone. It seemed like the best app with the most options. I also have aDyno so I guess I'll try it soon. Just waiting on the bluetooth obdII interface I ordered. If it all works, it should mean I will have a data logger and ecu scanner setup for a $20 investment. Oh, and it seems that you can transfer the saved logs to a windows pc.

I think Innovative has a OBDII app with the Bluetooth plug.

I use Torque Pro with a cheapy interface, grand total $25. It logs and emails logs in CSV format, so computer doesn't matter. It has plugins like video data overlay too. Works fine. The difference between the cheap interfaces and the considerably more expensive ones is data rate. There's a noticable, but small log between an action and it showing up in the display. That's not the app's fault, just the speed of the interface. Apparently the more expensive Bluetooth interfaces are quicker. Don't really care in my case. It's fun to play with and logs ANYTHING the ECU spits out, plus acceleration from the phones accelerometer (probably not super accurate, but fun) and integrates with GPS if you want a google earth file, etc.
Making videos requires transferring to PC and using some additional (free) 3rd Party tools. I didn't have any problem but some folks stumble around a bit with it.

In my phone Torque has an option to speed up the data rate with a Samsung Android phone like mine. I enabled it, hope it helps. Thanks for the input. I'll post up how it goes when I recieve the interface.

I havent seen the one from Innovative, didnt pop up in my app search. Other than Torque I have aDyno and Clockwork but Torque seems to be the better one.

On my DroidX it crapped out and defaulted to the slower rate. I'll give it a whirl on my S3.
Torque is pretty stout. About my only real complaint is that it defaults to metric. Which would make sense in a sane world, but . . .

I set it up in US measurements, hope it stays like that. Let me know how it works on the Galaxy S3 since I may get one soon. Also you didnt have to buy the app again for a different phone right?

App works fine with S3 and no you don't have to buy again. In fact it's transparent because it's associated with your Google account. I was worried about the PITA factor too, but it was literally nothing. FTM, it was $5, which didn't' bother me, just don't like spending time repeating myself.
As for speed, haven't tried yet; I'll give it a whirl.

Cool. I know its only $5 but I hate having to do something twice and setting it up again, just lazy. Lol. Thanks.

This is the mini interface I ordered. Since the obdII access port on the C5 is right under the steering column, I wanted the shortest one possible so I wouldnt hit with my legs since Im a taller driver.

No luck. Maybe its an iphone only app. I searched Log works and it sent me to the Torque app. Seems that Torque is an android only app as well. I wanted to use the ipad2 but oh well. Maybe I'll get a Galaxy tablet or something later thatll work with droid apps.

It's only for the iPhone. I tried to fiend it on the wife's iPad and the only thing that I can find is "DashCommand" and it's $50. Does all the same stuff.

I have an app called RACE ACE. It has all the standard g meter acceleration stuff. It also have lap timing and stage timing. It works pretty well compared to my AMD transponder. It doesn't have predictive lap timing or all the data that my trap mate has though.

Yes. And it has plugins (expanding). For example, the video data overlay is a plugin.
Carlos, out of curiosity, do think the accelerometer data from the phone is comparable tot he track mate?

Ok, I downloaded a couple plugins and they're pretty awesome. First is knock detector, it'll record any knock as you go wot. Next is Torque Scan, it scans all the all the readings that torque is seeing. You can go to the plugin and see every single reading real time. Track Recorder, allows you're mobile device to record video while displaying whatever gauges you want on the screen. I'm loving this plugin cuz my phone has a pretty good hd camera. Last was Racing Meter, it has a programmable shift lift, rpm led's while displaying rooms speed and gforces. I'm loving this app more and more and I haven't even used it yet. Lol. Hurry up mailman, I need my interface.

I just looked for the interface to see how much it is and it starts off at $180 and up.
The Elm interface is much better priced.

Is there a plugin or app that will allow me to download a vid from the track recorder to my pc or upload to youtube? I took test vids and cant locate them on my phone other then on the torque app.

Damn USPS, they suck. Tracking says the package, my interface, was delivered yet I got nothing. There was a letter in my mailbox so I know they came by. WTH?! I hope they didnt lose it. Thats my fault for not doing a better vendor search, theres an ebay vendor locate in Pomona, 5min from me, that sells it. I couldve picked one up in person last week. D'oh!

Read on the Torque forum how to transfer and encode the videos. You have to install some (free) software on your PC. The video and meta data are stored separately on the phone. It takes a PC tool to render them together, then you'll have the vid on your PC. Slightly clunky process, but it's not too bad and doesn't cost anything extra.

Well, got the interface today but it wouldn't communicate with the vettes ecu. It did read my Chrysler 200 and worked well. The app mentioned that some of the eBay interfaces may have trouble communicating with a j1850 protocol, which is what ford and gm use. So, they're sending me another more popular unit. Hope this one works.

Well I got the new interface in and it worked. App works good so far. Able to see quite a bit of data. Gonna do more driving tomorrow to keep testing. Like what I'm seeing so far.

So far Ive looked at speed, rpms, timing, intake temps, water temps, gear selection, hp/tq, throttle position, engine load and I did a knock detection test. I test a data log while cruising on the fwy just to see how to pull it up on the site and what it looks like. The only issue I had was finding the right passkey to pair it to my my phone via bluetooth. Most are "1234" or "0000". This one was "6789", just a heads up.

Man it looks like a PITA to download all those files and figure it out. I'll try in tomorrow after some sleep. Lol.

They have an ALDL cable that I can use, but I'll have to carry around my laptop to datalog. No big deal since I have a small Netbook.

They have obdI to obdII interface adapters. I dont know if it'll work with the Torque app and the bluetooth interface but it might be worth looking into.

Well, I work in R&D and spend my life around computers and software, including fairly obscure stuff, so I thought it was pretty easy, but yeah, not the most user friendly rendering process I suppose. It is value priced though!

I love my torque app... I haven't ever had an issue with it. I need to try some more video of it with my galaxy nexus since the video is better than my droid x but other than that I use it weekly to clear cat inefficiency codes he he, wonder why

Ha! Me too. Got me through the test. However, my cats and O2 are basically new and stock (my dd Protege). I fear I may have got a lean spit that wrecked'm.

10-25-2012, 12:06 AM
Well my cat codes are because the cats on the caddy are the size of a Pepsi can lol.
Damn cats are expensive too. Did you check the o2 sensors? Maybe they are messed up? I know I got a broken set of O2 sensors for my old s-10 straight from Napa... I took em back and they swapped em out for working ones no problem.

Yea they are shitty expensive... what year protégé? Is it something you might be able to nab in a junkyard? I have always found decent pricing on RockAuto for OEM grade stuff like plugs and stuff I'm sure they have cats as well.
